10 Little Odaibans Part 2 Again, scenes of violence, sadness, misery, and all-around nastiness...the ending will be funny though, if you can stick it out to find out the identity of the mystery killer. ------------------------------------------------------------ Ten Little Odaibans, Part 2. The party that was so cheery a few moments ago now had the sombre mood of a funeral. Nate sat next to Jenn's body, tears running down his cheeks as he lay his hand across her shoulder. The others sat or stood in various states of shock, sorrow, or anger-much of the latter being directed at Constantine. "Stolen" growled Dagrus, who was struggling as Tiren held him back. "Don't give me any of that $h!t! That's the oldest story in the book!" "Easy" said Tiren. "Ray's right, we start pointing fingers at each other, we play right into the killer's hands. I grieve for Jenn. We all do, in our own ways, she was our friend. For now though, we have to stay alive. That's what she'd want. That and to find out who did this and stop them from killing again." Dagrus slowly relaxed and Tiren let him go. Shadow turned to Ray. "What now?" "We spread out and search the area. Move in teams of two or three. No one goes alone. I still don't think the killer's one of us. None of us have any motivation I can think of." "Ha! Tell that to demon-girl over here" said Dagina with a glare at Kay. "I wouldn't be surprised if she'd-" Kay stepped forward and slapped Dagina hard across the face. "SHUT UP! I'd never kill Jenn! You maybe, but not her!" "STOP IT!" Everyone turned towards the voice, to see Maxie staring at them angrily with tears in her eyes. "Just stop fighting! Jenn wouldn't want you to fight..." The two girls looked at each other for a moment and then turned away. Kay walked over to stand next to Dagrus, while Dagina walked toward the door. "Well, are we going to get going?" ------------------------------------------------------------ The group stepped out once again into the main hall-and once there, they gaped-for written on the wall of the building, were four lines of verse: Ten little Odaibans Feeling mighty fine. One drank too fast, And then there were nine. "What the hell?" Nate stared at the words. "Is this some kinda sick joke?" "I'm not sure..." said Constantine. "Perhaps the murderer is taunting us; trying to make us afraid." "It's working." said Tiren. "I don't know about you, but I don't like this. I say we get out of here, now!" There were hesitent nods all around. Dagrus grimaced. "I don't want to run away like this, but I guess this guy holds all the cards or now. We'd better leave and see if we can come back with help." ------------------------------------------------------------ Fifteen minutes later, a group of wet, bedraggled teens hauled themselves back inside. "I don't get it" groused Shadow. "How could all our cars have run out of batteries? Pity no one remembered to bring jumper cables." "It appears" remarked Ray, "that we're stuck here. We can walk...but with the weather changing so suddenly, it seems like there's a big storm front moving in. It's not safe." "Just great!" said Kay. "We've got a crazed killer in here, and a storm out there. I'd swear we were in a movie-either that or a badly-written story." "What now?" asked Maxie, glancing about. "We should split up like Ray suggested earlier and look for the killer" replied Dagina. "I'll be damned if I''m going to just sit around and wait until he finds and kills me!" There were general murmers of agreement all around. The group began to pair up. Tiren with Ray. Dagrus with Kay. Nate with Dagina. Maxie with Constantine. Only Shadow remained unpartnered. Constantine looked at Shadow. "Wouldst thou like to come with Maxie and I? Thou shouldst not go alone." Shadow shook her head. "I work best alone, remember? Besides, I've survived alone for most of my life. I won't die easy." There were complaints, but Shadow in the end refused to listen and the groups went their seperate ways to search the mansion for the killer. ------------------------------------------------------------ An hour later, eight people walked back to the great hall. Dagna looked about. "So, where's Shadow?" The answer came a moment later when a scream echoed from outside and the sound of a body plummeting to the ground was audible. Racing outside, the assembled teens caught sight of Shadow's limp figure lying on the muddy ground. Constantine walked up to her, and placed a hand on her throat. A moment later he bowed his head. No more words were needed. ------------------------------------------------------------ Standing once more in the great hall, Kay spoke. "This is insane..." Dagina nodded. "For once, I agree with her. Did ANYONE find anything?" Everyone shook their heads. At that moment Nate cursed and pointed to the wall behind them. Everyone turned, and found that a second verse had appeared below the first: Nine little Odaibans Fearing they were late. One took a fall, And then there were eight. Everyone stared open-mouthed at the lines for a moment. Outside, the rain continued to fall. ------------------------------------------------------------ end part 2. |
