10 Year Anniversary
Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of Everquest. I'll share some of my favorite memories.
- My first character I rolled was a dark elf whose name I don't remember. The reason for this is that within the first 5 minutes I fell into some water and couldn't get out, so I exited out, deleted him, and rolled a human wizard (Velkkor).
- I played Velkkor for a few levels and was talking to my friend Jason, telling him how much fun I was having and trying to get him to play. He reluctantly agreed, and I talked him into playing a tank-type character. He decided on making a paladin. He named it Devastator.
- While grinding in North Ro we met up with another wizard named Skorch, and a druid named Wandazula. I wish I knew what happened to Skorch, he disappeared for years, came back for a few months while we were in Celestial Crusade (or maybe it was Uprising), then disappeared again.
- Wanda and I got tired of grinding on derv camps and decided to strike off into the wide world to find a new place to appease Devastator's hunger for XP. She took me to Faydwer and showed me Kelethin, and I'll never forget how awed I was by the huge wizard spires in Greater Faydark.
- By the time we had finished scouting locations and exploring in general, Dev and Skorch had pulled ahead a few levels and had moved onto the Oasis.
- Many levels later I was hanging out in Sol A with a group that was made up of any combination of Devastator, Prax, Mitor, Thutmoise, Dethpatryn and Shadowyn. Shadowyn could pull anything in the zone (and sometimes everything in the zone) to the teddy room. I remember the first time I was there and being told by Prax, "No don't tell ANYONE about this place!" given that there was never anybody there. Those were good times. This is also the first time I'd really encountered Stars, who had pretty much claimed Sol B as their own (they had a shitload of level 50s), causing us to refer to Sol B as "Little Tokyo."
- I remember joining Stormravens with the help of Prax, Musk, and others, as I saw their members everywhere and had a high opinion of them.
- I remember Dev quitting Krieger because they were talking @#%$ about Prax (I don't remember if it was in guildchat or on the forums), and Dev asked them to stop as Prax was a good guy and a friend of his. They didn't. Dev bailed.
- I remember learning that accepting a res while in zone does not clear aggro. I was in Mistmoore with Dev and Dharkin while camping maiden/butler fangs. I died and discovered I was still bound at our last camp spot, the HBC spawn (I'd port out, sell garbage, gate back and split). Nobody was camping it, so I got stuck in a death loop. Dev and I coordinated over the phone my logging in just in time for the res box to come up so I could accept. I did so, started looting my corpse, and it occurred to me that I didn't zone. I had enough time to say "Um, guys?" before I heard the door to the butler room open and I was dead. Dev just kept saying "Holy @#%$" over and over on the phone as he and Dharkin made a break for it through a total sea of armored dark elves. Everything in the castle was in that hall. Needless to say, Dev actually made it to the zone with heals, DA, etc.
- Does anyone else remember Bova Ball in West Commonlands?. Two guilds would declare war on each other, Bova would follow someone around until they got destroyed, then he'd follow a member of the other team. The idea was to get Bova to follow you to the predetermined "scoring area."
- I remember Shadowyn having his full set of rubi stolen by a scamming bastard in the Lost Temple of Cazic Thule when his group wiped to Avatar of Fear. He granted a rogue consent and the guy took all his gear (obviously before they changed /consent).
- I remember being in Celestial Crusade and finding Miragul in the Everfrost Caverns while finally doing my wizard staff quest. I called out in guild chat that there was an angry necro down there, they came down and killed it, and there was the next step in the Fiery Avenger quest completed.
What memories do you have?

Re: 10 Year Anniversary
My 1st toon June of '99, named Aboxorox Roxyorsox, Ranger.
I remember trying to make the run from Qeynos to Freeport at level 9, putting everything in the bank so I wouldn't lose my gear. Died 4 times, made it on the 5th attempt. Impossible to find SoW back then, pre-Kunark. Ended up hanging out near FP gates for 3 days worth of logging in, trying to find a bind and too afraid to go fight or group until I did.
Joining my first Guild <Seekers> and our first attempts at Guild raiding, Sand Giants, Specters (Oasis), and Griffs (E Comms). No such thing as a cheal rot back then, was much fun.
I remember having a bunch of really close friends in the <Sisterhood> Guild, lots of good times with them as well.
Re: 10 Year Anniversary
I remember spending alot of time in oasis.
When you hit level 20 you had to leave cause nothing gave you experience after you hit that level. I stayed around after i hit level 20 to help those that were close to that level themselves. I remember dying like three times and losing my level that many times each time I died only to have to regain the experience to get the level back. I was glad when everyone hit level 20 so I could stop dying...such the life of a cleric...hehehe
I remember relying on folks in my group to tell me when a NPC was coming and I was staring at a book when I med.
I remember a guildie rescuing me from the dark elf in west commons at the toll booth....the DE would kill me before I ever saw what was hitting me..LOL
I remember bigger guilds coming to save the smaller guilds from the wipe outs in plane of fear.
I remember the long camps and long boat rides (being late for work cause the boat ride was so long and I didnt want to die just cause I logged off while on a boat). All those long spans of time made time to make some good friends in the game chatting back and forth. I was never bored.
I remember the endless chain heals...which are like a thing of the past now.
I remember my first guild "cold comfort" and my most likely last guild "rest in peace".
I will forever love the game of EQ even with its flaws because so many other good things supercede the flaws. I can always hope the flaws will be fixed on the next patch.
I have old friends in EQ that periodically will log in and surprise me and I continue to make new friends in the game.
I feel fortunate that I picked up that EQ game box in Costco back in 2000. I would have missed alot of fun if I had not.
I have fond memories with friends at the many fan faires I have been to that I played in game with and will continue going as long as they have them. Crazy times!
I will always play EQ as long as Sony has it up and running Edited by: LadyStarrieDancer at: 4/1/09 11:10 pm

hmm
I remember guys at work talking about everquest at lunch... and I was always clueless in the conversations. I watched my next door neighbor play it, but he had bad video drivers so colors were all whack... and his comp sucked, so I didn't like eq from what I saw.
IN August, I got the game, spent about 10 hours getting my name, I knew I wanted to be a human monk though. Upon getting in the game, I remember I couldn't see crap. A helpful wood elf saw me, after I stood there for an hour, and guessed right as to my plight offering to guide me to the other Qeynos zone. I found my way out to the gate, and I was hooked.
All these people from all over the world in one place in same game... I was so hooked. I remember some guy asking for a bind, so I got enough silver and bought a bandage. I went, bound his wounds... but his health wasn't that low... I was confused. Ran into a bard named Sluin, showed me a sweet spawn point, was where Djerr darkpaw spawned, mobs just rained down, we banked.
I bought a snakeskin jerkin from some guy, and found qeynos catacombs.
Ran into a gnome in there, wiz i think. He was hunting Drosco, if you remember that quest. I became a sewer rat, soloing thugs, etc, and leveled fast. I got high enough to kill frogloks for netted armor $$$, and guided high level players (20s? lol) through the catacombs, for donations. The paw of oppolla? was a big thing there. I got my rings, and earrings there, and eventually I ran into a halfling named Meggas.
Druid he was, and turns out this was another toon he had, his gnome wiz I had run into earlier. He was a beta tester, and offered to show me a 3 gnoll spawn point outside Black burrow. Thus I left qeynos...
I didn't have much success in BB, too many trains, although I did hunt there, and ended up deciding one day to make a trek to freeport. Why? I dunno. I also was doing the headband quests, and at the ruins with putrid skels, 2 players were causing me trouble. Boofy, and Doofy. A human ranger showed up, lvl 22 to help me, named Secret. Turns out Secret was Meggas!
So I took the cloth map the game came with and tried getting to freeport with that. Unfortunately it was just art, and a druid saw me in west karana, and offered to port me to butcherblock, because it was faster to Freeport. I accepted.
I died soon after porting in... and began the trek again. I got to highpass somehow.... and bought a platinum type engagement ring from a male wood elf, for my first stat jewelry. I got to kith.. and was told to follow the path. I ended up finding freeport, and following an online guide I set out to hunt shivered mummies in North ro. Only thing was, they were called shriveled mummies, and rabies was a pain. So I run into a halfling druid named Rudd in North ro, and he and I hooked up and he showed me crocs in oasis. I remember seeing my first surname, a female wood elf druid, and was in awe. Red con player with 2 names!
Sand giant to beach, Areeeeewwww drybones, spectres being kited....and man... I will continue this in another post

The funiest thing I remember doing when I first started to play eq was BB (Blackburrow) It was 2000 and I had a halfelf ranger. I would find someone to hook me up with a sow and I would drop down the tree trunk. My goal was always to see how many mobs I could train to the zone in.

I think one of my favourite memories is when I was in a group in solB killing kobolds and we were going after the noble. Well, the noble charmed me and I managed to get everybody in my group killed. and once they were killed, I obediently followed my "master" back to his spawn point and stayed there for like 2 minutes. but it seemed like forever..and as soon as the charm broke I booked it to the zone! haha...ahhh good times

best memories..
too many great memories, too many people to mention. Don't think their will ever be a game that had such a large amount of people dependent on others that made a huge impact on us gamers.. very interesting social interaction. My favorite memories were when i was level 50 then Kunark with my green armor. worst memory... when i @#%$ up getting my epic... never did get it and only need one piece too!! Sad...
Re: best memories..
You know, I started this game in May of 1999 at the suggestion of my high school friends. We were all into Q2 like crazy and we would do LANs every weekend. Then all of a sudden, one of our crew got into the EQ beta and played a ranger. I couldn't believe that if you attacked an Orc in Gfay, that it would never stop chasing you unless you died or it died...insane. His name was Annih and he was in Kreiger and another one of my RL friends was Pixy Mistynote (bard).
So many great memories, and Like Cherlin said, I don't think a game will ever captivate me like EQ did.
I remember watching Shaere FD killing aviaks in SK at the aviak tower. Seeing Wally (another monk) doing flying kicks in Cazic.
There hasn't been another game since that has created such tight-knit community and interdependence like EQ did.

Visslik, hopefully you still read this forum. Do you know what ever happened to Shadowyn? He was like my first real bud in EQ. We both took the last name Mistwalker when a GM picked it for us (this was before anyone knew about the Mistwalker scimitar off Vox, way before people were even doing Vox). I played a ranger named Perky that used to tag along with him but later gave him up for my druid main, Streak. I know that he and some other old school SR members left for another server but I lost contact with him shortly after that move.
I miss Storm Ravens - I think back in the early days we must have been one of the largest guilds on the server. A lot of good guys started out in SR but slowly moved on to Kreiger/Talisman etc... Wonder what ever happened to Prax, Helagon, Dev, and the gang. I know Shadora was leading the guild back in '00-'02. I think my guild progression went SR, Kreiger, Vae.
P.S. Uriah sucks
P.S.S. I still think I have some guy's Fungi Tunic from Vae --- some shaman but it wasn't Thrallsaer. Hell I wonder whatever happened to him, last I heard he was in the hospital and could no longer game.
P.S.S. I have no affiliation with Streaker of Tunare :P. I remember when you first showed up on the scene, playing a ranger I think. Some confusion you caused there buddy! haha Edited by: The Streaker at: 10/28/09 1:42 pm
