A Moonlight Shadow (Ruby)
The sound of the open water was a mystic thing. All water was one, in the ocean, in the air, and in this lake. If the air was the holy breathe of god, then surely the water was his life-giving blood. A gift to all his creations to bear and sustain them, to bring them ease and succor.

Art had always felt connected to the water. Whenever he could manage, he would sneak into the local pools just to feel it around him, despite the sting of the chlorine. It was the nearest thing he could feel to a loving embrace, to feel the essenstial flow of life around him.

In the dark of night with only the glow of the moon, the water seemed so mysterious. He sat at the edge of the water, wearing night-black clothing, trailing his fingertips in the water. He wondered as he looked out whether he could walk out into the water, simply stride into the inky darkness and disappear, sinking back into the pool of life. He would smell the fish, see the green of reeds growing. There was so much life here that surely it could take a bit more. What would it be like to be so completely embraced? Would it feel the same as Arion's arms? Was that what he was looking for, after all?

Re: A Moonlight Shadow (Ruby)
Slowly, and seemingly without purpose, Stella wandered emerged from darkness of the surrounding tree line, sudden starlight only increasing the slight sliver radiance that shone from her. Hands clasped before her, her white dress start against the trees, Stella halted as she looked out across the lake. The water’s surface reflected the light so cunningly Stella thought for a moment there were two skies; one at her feet, one stretching out above her head. The illusion was so perfect Stella wondered if she should trip into the lake, would she fall forever through the velvet blackness and diamond lights?

With a small sigh Stella broke out of her reverie and tore her eyes away from the lake turned sky. It was such a beautiful night. The air was neither chilly nor unpleasantly warm, there was only a slight breeze, and not a cloud in sight to obstruct the view of the heavens. Stella resumed the walk that had taken her from her room to the forest, and now to this. Slowly she made her way around the lake edge, her eyes glancing from the trees to the lake to the sky then back to the lake.

It was because of this distracted state she did not notice the figure sitting by the lake until she was almost on top of him. She gasped, stepping back so quickly she almost lost her balance. Once she was sure she would retain equilibrium Stella clasped her hands before her, her eyes slightly grey with the shock of having her feeling of solitude shattered.

“Forgive me, I did not see you.”

Art felt the flow of nature around him, and he thought. The city was a thing of purpose. Every inch of concrete, every steel beam, was a product of design and planning. The pipes, the sewers, the gutters and the dumpsters; they were all a part of larger plan. Each bit was deliberate, its purpose known and its whole life planned out in advance. A lattice of intent and intellect that stretched out in a fashion larger and more elaborate then any man could comprehend.

This... was different. The embrace of life was complete, but life was not so precise. The water lapped at the shore and made its own sound. The leaves of the trees rustled, and the wood softly moaned under its own weight. The crickets and the frogs made their own mismatched mating calls while the fish swished quietly in the water. Not a single purpose, but an uncountable number of single voices. Living and dying on their own, with no plan or design. Air biting away the water, the trees feeding on the earth, every one working against the other, but somehow all living as one.

“Forgive me, I did not see you.”

Another voice entered, falling amid all the others, not disrupting or dispelling, only joining the tumult. His fingertips paused their circles on the skin of the water, and her turned to look at the new speaker.

She... shone, somehow. Amid the ink-black water and shadows of unseen leaves, it looked as if the moon had descended to cast its light from far nearer. As he looked at her, everything else fell away into outer darkness. She was now the center of everything else, and all the environs moved as she did. The world swayed with her shifting balance.

He turned from his prone stance at the shore, pulling himself up to sit and watch her, dark clothing fading into the black of the water leaving his face and hands to hover ghostly.

"No forgiveness is needed, I was trying to be unseen." He bowed his head. "I was... thinking about things. Contemplating life and love. I do not think I found any answers here. If you wish to be alone, I will go look elsewhere." His voice was soft and languid, almost inaudible amid the sounds of the night.

A Moonlight Shadow (Ruby)
As she felt eyes taking her in, she too looked at the person she had so unexpectedly stumbled across. Unconsciously her head titled ever so slightly to the left as she looked over the black clothes and a face she was unfamiliar with. The surprise that had been stamped across her face lessened considerably, her expression now one of open, even child-like curiosity.

<"No forgiveness is needed, I was trying to be unseen.">

Instinctively Stella’s eye’s widened for it seemed odd to expect people to hide from, and then she recalled it was not uncommon for students to request the lakeside after dark. Stella gave a slightly timid smile, her eyes gradually returning to their natural cerulean blue.

“That does make me feel a little better about almost tripping over you.”

The dark garments were indeed almost indistinguishable from the black of the lake, appearing as a black silhouette against the star spangled reflection of the water. Stella was suddenly aware how harsh her own white attire must stand against the dark greens, blues, browns and blacks of the landscape that surrounded them both. She smoothed her skirt down, hardly aware she was doing so.

<"I was... thinking about things. Contemplating life and love. I do not think I found any answers here. If you wish to be alone, I will go look elsewhere.">

Stella’s eyes enlarged again, her mouth forming a small “o” of protest.

“Oh no, do not trouble yourself. It was I that imposed on your privacy.”

Stella paused, her gaze shifting from the face of the boy to the surface of the lake then back, her teeth catching her bottom lip slightly. Now the rhythm of her walk had been halted, the surreal state that had set in as she had left the lights of the school behind had been shattered. While not a bad thing, the rush back to reality had started up the thoughts that had been troubling her as they began to circle in her mind, returning over and over and still no solution was apparent.

“Life and love… “

A slight blush blossomed on Stella’s cheeks as she uttered that last word. As she felt the slight flush, Stella pressed her palm to the side of her face, embarrassed and a little stunned by her own reaction. A face flashed in her mind like lightning, almost too fleeing to make out. Slowly Stella let her hand drop to her side again.

“I think I may also have some thinking to do on those matters. If you do not object to company, maybe we could help find each other find some answers.”

Running a hand through her white hair Stella offered an open smile, hoping the boy would not think he had to leave on her account. It had been she that had so clumsily disrupted his quietude.

Re: A Moonlight Shadow (Ruby)
The night retreated, seeming to flee from this starlit young girl who had come so close to him. It seemed the only thing he could see was a single, solid moonbeam, sending the image of a distant princess from some far-flung kingdom set among the heavens. His face was soft, caught in a reverie of his musings, mysterious in the soft light.

“That does make me feel a little better about almost tripping over you.”

"Do not trouble yourself. I could hardly fault you for what was my own intention."

Her hands moved, embarrassed or shy, in unsteady patterns. He stayed rock steady, not wanting to spook or worry her. It seemed as if she were ready to disappear in an instant at any provocation.

“Life and love… “ “I think I may also have some thinking to do on those matters. If you do not object to company, maybe we could help find each other find some answers.”

He saw some color in her finally, a soft hue of pink suffusing her alabaster cheeks. So she was alive after all. He couldn't help but wonder if that blood she showed was warm or cool; if she was a creature of the soft night breezes, which warmed no more then moonbeams did.

"I think I should like your company very much." He held up both of his hands, palms flat up, a source of support. "Please, come sit with me. I am finding no answers on my own. Perhaps someone else could have a clearer perspective then my own." He wondered how smooth her skin was, how warm. He wondered what she would think of him falling in love so suddenly and easily, and if she had her own love to wonder about.

"I think I should like your company very much."

Stella’s eyes flicked from the hands extended towards her to the face before her, her confusion apparent. You did not hold out two hands if you wanted to shake, what was it she was supposed to do? Taking a guess, she rested one of her own palms on his and used it as a support as she lowered herself down to sit on a conveniently flat rock, then thanking him with a smile.

“I am finding no answers on my own. Perhaps someone else could have a clearer perspective then my own."

“if you would perhaps explain the problem to me? And please understand my experience in matters of both life and love are extremely limited.” Again the sides of her mouth twitched up into a smile, and her expression was apologetic. “So I hope you will not be offended if my suggestions are inaccurate.”

The thought of her own ignorace sparked that constant ember of frustration that was always smoldering inside her. Tilting her head towards the heavens Stella left out a short sigh, then returned her gaze to the boy she was now sitting beside.

"I think I should like your company very much."

He could feel the soft, smooth skin of her hands and the warmth of her smile. So she was alive after all, and really was here talking to him. A beautiful girl, glowing in the soft moonlight, all the more otherworldly for being real.

"I think I shall like yours just as much." He smiled at her, the sweet talk automatic.

“I am finding no answers on my own. Perhaps someone else could have a clearer perspective then my own."

“if you would perhaps explain the problem to me? And please understand my experience in matters of both life and love are extremely limited.” “So I hope you will not be offended if my suggestions are inaccurate.”

He sighed softly, smiling back at her, face tranquil and easy. "It is often enough for someone to listen." He took a deep breath. "I met this girl... she literally fell into my arms. From the very first moment it seemed like she was perfect. Everything; her appearance, the way she acted, the way she felt right being so close to me."

He paused, looking up into the sky. "I fell hard. I wanted to be with this girl. Even when she told me some... strange things. Despite the way she gets sad so easily. I want to be there for her, her protector from all of that. I want her to exist to be happy, and to do everything I can to make that happen. But... I don't know..." He stopped, voice slightly choked, unable to continue. Unfamiliar strong emotion racked through him, leaving him quiet and trembling ever so slightly.
