Alicia Prewett - Auror/OotP Member
OOC
Name: Gemma
Contacts: Ezinbox is probably easiest, otherwise madfruitbat@hotmail.com
Age: 20
Code: Hermione Granger
IC
Name: Alicia Leandra Prewett
Nickname(s): Lis, Lissy Lea (but only by her grandfather – anyone else does it on pain of death)
DOB: March 12th 1971
Blood: Half blood
Previous School/House: Hogwarts, Gryffindor
Occupation: Auror/Member of The Order of the Phoenix
Physical Appearance:
Alicia has always had the advantage of height on her side. She stands at 5’8, thanks to tall genes from both of her parents. While she didn’t bother about it so much as a child, Alicia has taken more care over her weight as an adult, particularly as she approaches forty – she hates the idea of being overweight as well as over the hill (she’s not quite come to terms with her age yet and still sees herself as a 28 year old). Having lost weight during her Auror training, she has managed to keep it off and now weighs a healthy 150 pounds – enough to give her a curvaceous figure which she is very proud of.
Her ability to think of herself as 10 years younger than she is is helped by the fact that she looks it. She has a youthful, heart-shaped face, clear skin and keeps herself fit in aid of her job. Her grey-blue eyes give away little about the person beneath them, and while they can sometimes seem cold, they light up when she is happy, changing her entire appearance from wary to warm and friendly.
As a child Alicia’s black hair was waist length, but in her second year she got annoyed with it and cut most of it off by magic. Sadly she didn’t do a very good job of it and had to wait a month before she went home for the holidays to have it tidied up. Since then, she has kept it short, usually somewhere between her ears and her chin. These days she wears it in a choppy style just above chin length. Contrasting sharply with the black hair she inherited from her mother is her pale skin, which gives her, she feels, a striking look. Unlike many girls at school, Alicia was always perfectly happy with how she looked and couldn’t understand the other girls in her dormitory who complained regularly about every aspect of their appearance.
When not wearing wizard robes for work, Alicia is most comfortable in dark jeans, long gypsy-style skirts and white or pale shirts (usually un-ironed – she can’t be bothered). She lives in a beige, waist-length cord jacket, and usually wears black shoes or leather boots with as low a heel as she can get away with, feeling that she’s quite tall enough already.
Personality:
Outgoing, bubbly and intelligent, Alicia Prewett doesn’t seem the type to be an Auror. Only those who get on the wrong side of her ever see the fiery temper that she has a struggle to keep under control in everyday situations. She gets annoyed incredibly easily and so circumstances such as queues in supermarkets and being put on hold on the phone bring her very close to losing her temper. If it weren’t for an awful lot of willpower she would have been locked up by the muggle police some time ago. However, when her temper is under control, she is a lovely person to know. She is trustworthy, an excellent shoulder to cry on, and fiercely loyal, willing to defend anyone she cares about to the death.
Alicia has always gotten on better with men than women; her best friend at school was her cousin, Bill Weasley, and while training to be an Auror she shared a flat with a fellow, male, trainee. However, she often worries that other women see this as her being overly flirtatious, which she isn’t. In fact she struggles around members of the opposite sex. She had just one boyfriend at school and has had only a couple of meaningless flings since she left. She hopes one day to find ‘the one’, but isn’t specifically out looking for him.
Alicia inherited her stubborn nature from her mother, and the two women have used this against each other on a number of occasions. Alicia stubbornly refused to forgive her mother for abandoning her after her father’s death, while Leandra stubbornly refused to accept Alicia being part of the Order which she still, deep down, believes is the reason for her husband’s death. Coupled with this is Alicia’s ability to hold grudges, and it is only in extreme circumstances that she will let go of them.
Partly because of her job and partly because of her father, Alicia despises the dark side and everything and everyone connected with it. Just as Mrs Black removed from her family tree all references to family members who had disappointed her, Alicia now refuses to acknowledge that she is any relation to families such as the Malfoys and the Lestranges, recognising the Weasleys, Tonks and her family, and Sirius (when he was alive) as her only magical relations.
Since the age of 12, Alicia has been strongly determined to make something of herself, something her father would have been proud of her for. She attacks any task she is given with passion, and won’t stop until it is completed to the best of her ability. She viewed her exams and her Auror training in this way and as such is among the best the Ministry has. She is very proud of her job and feels that she has really achieved something worthwhile.
Having lost all of her immediate family over the years, Alicia now views the Weasleys and Tonks, a close friend, as her family. Her greatest fear is losing any more of them to the Death Eaters, having already lost Sirius, her father and her uncle that way.
History:
Alicia Leandra Prewett was born on the 21st March 1971 to Gideon Prewett and Leandra Walker. Gideon was partway through Auror training but had hit a low point and he was struggling to carry on with it, while his brother, Fabian, was excelling. He went into a bar near the Ministry to drown his sorrows, and got chatting to a pretty young barmaid, Leandra. He told her, omitting magic-related details, about himself, his life and his problems – she just assumed he was a university student or similar. By the end of the evening, he was convinced she was the woman he was going to marry, and would have told her the entire truth about himself had Fabian not arrived and hauled him out of the bar. The couple began seeing each other, and eventually Gideon did tell her everything. She accepted who and what he was without question. After a courtship of 18 months, they married and Leandra moved to Northamptonshire with Gideon. Gideon completed his Auror training, and, just under a year later, Alicia was born.
Alicia grew up in a very happy household as a child. She was educated in her early years by her mother, with her father teaching her as much basic magical knowledge as was possible without the use of a wand. Two years after Alicia’s birth, Gideon and Leandra began to try for another child. Sadly, Leandra was unable to conceive, and the couple were forced to accept that Alicia would be their only child, and loved her all the more for it. She was never spoiled with material possessions, but her parents did spend as much time as possible with her and as a result she grew extremely close to both of them. She was a happy child and showed intelligence and a thirst for learning even at a young age. She was never lonely, spending time much time with her parents, grandparents and cousins, the Weasleys.
As she grew older, tensions began to appear in her parents’ marriage, although Alicia was too young to notice them. The war against Voldemort was intensifying and Gideon, along with his brother Fabian, sister Molly and Molly’s husband Arthur, joined Albus Dumbledore’s new defensive group, The Order of the Phoenix. Leandra, while fully appreciating the danger the wizarding world was in, and Gideon’s desperation to protect his wife and young daughter, could not accept his desire to risk his life in the course of duty in the Order. She refused to discuss his work with Dumbledore, pretending to herself that he was just out at work in a normal job. Every evening Gideon returned, unharmed except for perhaps a couple of bruises or scratches, which Leandra refused to ask about.
However, one night when Alicia was nine years old, Gideon did not return home. Dumbledore arrived at the house at midnight to tell a frantic Leandra that Gideon and his brother Fabian had been killed by a group of five Death Eaters. Leandra flew into a hysterical rage, throwing things at Dumbledore and blaming him for her husband’s death. Alicia, woken by the noise, came into the front room and saw her mother screaming at Dumbledore. He spotted the small girl but before he could move to prevent it, Leandra shouted out again, inadvertently telling her daughter of Gideon’s death. In order to avoid any more problems, Dumbledore contacted Gideon’s parents who came to take Alicia back to their house, while Dumbledore forcibly took Leandra to St. Mungo's, where she suffered a nervous breakdown brought on by the shock and was forced to remain for three months. Alicia stayed with her grandparents, Ignatius and Lucretia, who explained everything that had happened, believing it better for her to know and understand the truth now, rather than discovering it later.
Things had changed so swiftly for Alicia; she was used to spending time with both her mother and father, but now one was in hospital, coming back who knew when, and the other was never coming back. She continued her studies with her grandmother and, when her mother was released from hospital, visited her one day a week but continued to live with her grandparents, her mother not feeling ready to have her back yet.
A year after Gideon’s death, when Alicia was 10 years old, her mother finally decided the time was right for Alicia to move back home. Alicia however, had become used to living with her grandparents and had no inclination to go back to, as she saw it, the woman who had abandoned her when she needed her the most. She reluctantly returned, but the relationship between mother and daughter had changed. Alicia was disruptive, didn’t pay attention to her studies and spent as much time out of the house as possible.
In the July of that year, Alicia received her letter informing her of her place at Hogwarts. She accepted it at once without even consulting her mother. When asked, she told her that, being a muggle, she couldn’t possibly understand. She persuaded her grandparents to take her to King’s Cross on September 1st and, when her mother arrived at the station just before Alicia went onto the platform, she ignored her completely, pushing through the barrier without a word of goodbye.
Lucretia attempted to comfort Leandra by telling her that, once Alicia settled into Hogwarts, she would calm down and her behaviour would improve. This was not the case. Whether she still had anger at her father’s death that she needed to deal, with, or whether she was just used to being bad by this point, nobody could quite work out, but Alicia was nothing short of a tearaway. She was sorted into Gryffindor and began to lose the house points almost immediately. Within her first couple of months at the school she earned herself detentions for late or incomplete homework, misbehaviour in class and being out of bed and walking around the castle at night. She made few friends: the only person who stuck by her and attempted to keep her under control was her cousin Bill Weasley, also a Gryffindor first year. He had limited success with this, but continued regardless, feeling it his duty as family to try to help her. She passed her first-year exams, but only just.
Alicia did not return home until the summer holidays, the majority of which were spent with her grandparents. Her mother was becoming increasing depressed through her daughter’s refusal to acknowledge her, although Lucretia was the only one to notice. Alicia went back to school none the wiser, having spent most of the holidays ignoring her mother.
Her second year began in a similar fashion to the first, with mayhem and disruption more important to Alicia than her schoolwork. Nothing changed until late December, when Alicia was staying at Hogwarts for Christmas again. Not only had she refused to return home, she had neglected to send her mother so much as an owl to wish her a Merry Christmas. On the evening of Christmas Day, Alicia was called to Dumbledore’s office, where the headmaster told her that her mother had been admitted to St. Mungo’s having attempted suicide. Professor McGonagall accompanied Alicia to the hospital, and while they waited she told the girl about Gideon as he was at school; a bright and determined pupil who excelled in his subjects and was well liked among the students. Alicia barely heard. She was too caught up in her own guilt, knowing it was she who had driven her mother to attempt to take her own life. Ignatius and Lucretia arrived and took over from Professor McGonagall, and before long they were admitted to Leandra’s room. The second she entered, Alicia threw herself at her mother and hugged her, refusing to let go.
Leandra recovered slowly, and Alicia, on her return to school, was a changed witch. Evidently something of Professor McGonagall’s talk had penetrated her mind, because she began to apply herself to her studies, determined to do something with her life that would have made her father proud of her. Having messed about through the first year and a half of her magical education, her knowledge was lacking in some areas and it took time for her grades to improve. She passed her second year exams with grades that, while not wonderful, showed a marked improvement on the previous year, her highest being in Defence Against the Dark Arts. She spent the summer at home with her mother, making up for lost time. Sadly during the summer, Lucretia suffered a fatal heart attack. Ignatius, while coping with his own grief, moved in with Leandra and Alicia, hoping to prevent both women from reverting to their respective old ways. Thankfully, though both struggled to accept she was gone, neither did go back.
At the beginning of the third year, Alicia began to study Ancient Runes and Care of Magical Creatures along with her other subjects. Her grades continued to improve and a glimmer of the intelligence she had shown as a child could be seen again. Her younger cousin Charlie had just started at the school and she spent a lot of time with him and Bill, either relaxing in the Common Room or out on the Quidditch Pitch. Her father had begun to teach her to fly before his death and she loved it. Charlie had ambitions to be on the Quidditch team and she and Bill helped him practice. She also made friends with a couple of the girls in her year, though Bill remained her closest friend.
Her fourth year passed without much event. Her grades continued to improve, especially in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms and Potions, although she, like so many Gryffindors before and after her, despised Professor Snape. Charlie made it onto the Quidditch team as Seeker and she spent lots of time watching him practice and play. Over the summer she had to deal with the death of her grandfather Ignatius from, it seemed, a broken heart – although he had helped his daughter-in-law and granddaughter, he had never really accepted Lucretia’s death himself. Alicia found this death incredibly difficult, having grown very close to him during the time she lived with him. He did however survive long enough to see both Alicia and Bill appointed as Gryffindor prefects.
The return to school brought the threat of OWLs, but Alicia threw herself into her work and her prefect duties in an effort to take her mind off Ignatius’ death. Towards the end of the Autumn term her grades began to slip again as she struggled to cope, but Christmas changed all that. She and Leandra spent the holiday with the Weasleys, and on Christmas morning, each of the children woke up to find a letter from Ignatius among their presents. Alicia’s told her how proud he was of her, and that he knew his granddaughter would do outstandingly well in her exams. Buoyed up by a determination now not only to make her father proud of her, but also her grandparents, Alicia attacked her workload with renewed vigour and passed her OWLs with the following grades:
Transfiguration: E
Defence Against the Dark Arts: O
Charms: O
Potions: O
Herbology: E
History of Magic: A
Care of Magical Creatures: E
The Study of Ancient Runes: E
Determined to follow in her father’s footsteps and become an Auror, Alicia continued with Potions, Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology and Charms in her sixth year. On telling her mother her aspiration however, she didn’t receive the positive reception she had hoped for. Leandra was worried about her daughter’s safety, in light of what had happened to Gideon. Although reluctant to cause another rift between herself and her mother, Alicia ignored her. She kept her grades up and studied well, and for the first time, had a boyfriend, a Hufflepuff 6th Year called Robert Runesk. It was short lived, over in a matter of weeks, but fun while it lasted. Over the summer she discovered she had only just missed out on the position of Head Girl to a Ravenclaw by the name of Jessica Tracey, but was ecstatic for Bill when he was made Head Boy.
Alicia’s seventh year at Hogwarts was focused entirely on her work. She had been offered a provisional place to train as an Auror, provided she could achieve the required grades in her NEWTs. Showing the complete opposite of her working attitude at the beginning of her school life, Alicia worked herself to the point of exhaustion, but it paid off. She achieved Es in Potions and Herbology, and Os in Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration, and was accepted onto the Auror training programme. She decided the time was right to leave home and moved to London, lodging with another student on the course. Training went well, and she continued to keep in touch with Bill who had taken a job as a trainee curse-breaker for Gringotts. She passed with flying colours and began working as an Auror three years after leaving Hogwarts.
The following three years passed uneventfully, aside from a couple of meaningless affairs and numerous arguments with her mother about her job. The largest of these came in the summer of 1995 when Molly Weasley asked her to join the reformed Order of the Phoenix. Alicia was honoured to be asked to be part of the organisation her father had fought so hard as a member of, but for her mother, this was the final straw. Gideon had died working for the Order and she was damned if she’d see her daughter going the same way. What she hadn’t banked on was the fact that her daughter had inherited her stubborn streak, and no amount of arguing or pleading would make Alicia rethink. In order to cope, Leandra adopted the same strategy as before, ignoring any mention of the Order and pretending she knew nothing about it.
Due to commitments to the Auror office that had taken her across the country, Alicia was not involved in the battle at the Department of Mysteries. She was however one of the first to arrive at headquarters afterwards and so one of the first to hear the news of Sirius’ death. They had been distantly related and she had been enjoying getting to know him. Having had yet another person close to her taken by the Death Eaters, she threw herself into her job with renewed energy and volunteered almost at once to be one of the Aurors stationed at Hogwarts in the September of 1996. She was involved in the battle with the Death Eaters at the school the following summer and was forced to watch as Fenrir Greyback attacked her beloved cousin Bill.
The Auror office tried to force her to take time off after this incident, as did her mother, but Alicia refused. The Second War was escalating and Aurors were needed everywhere all the time. Within a year she was back at the school again fighting another Death Eater attack in which several students were killed. When Harry finally defeated Voldemort the following year, Alicia finally took, or rather, was forced to take, the break she had badly needed for 2 years, and went travelling the world, staying for a while with Charlie in Romania.
Since her return to England in 2001, Alicia has been working back at the Auror office, and while things are never exactly quiet there, things have calmed since the defeat of Lord Voldemort. In 2005, Alicia had to endure the death of yet another family member. Leandra had been diagnosed with breast cancer two years before and had finally lost her battle with the disease. Alicia had moved back in with her mother to help her cope, but since her death she has been living back in London, as she loves the city life. Now it is 2009, and the Death Eaters are on the march once more. Things are getting busier and busier at work, and she has just received an Owl from her cousin Ginny. It seems the Order has been revived…
Roleplay Sample:
“Mum, give it a rest.”
“Lis, I can’t. You know I can’t. I can’t accept you working for them. If your father were alive today…”
Alicia sighed deeply. “Mum, if Dad were alive today, he’d support me whole-heartedly. In fact, he’d be rejoining the Order himself! It’s what he believed in. And now the Minister’s lost his marbles…”
Leandra cut over her daughter. “You’d do better to watch what you say about the Minister. Don’t forget he pays your wages. I don’t have to be a witch to understand how money works Alicia. No job, no money.”
Alicia sighed again before turning round and walking out of the room. Her mother was still calling after her, but she’d stopped listening. They’d had this tiresome argument at least six times since Molly’s visit the previous afternoon, asking Alicia to be part of the newly reformed Order of the Phoenix. Alicia had jumped at the chance. She worked at the Ministry, she knew how little Fudge was doing to fight the Death Eaters and she knew only too well how hard he was trying to ignore the fact that Voldemort had returned.
Slamming her bedroom door behind her like she had done when she was 12, Alicia threw herself down on her bed, trying to picture her father, a task which she found more and more difficult as time went on. Sure, she had photos of him, but actually picturing him in memory, in her mind’s eye, was nearly impossible now. She stared up at the ceiling, considering once again the offer to join the Order. She had to do it, if nothing else, for him.
