Amidst the flora (open)
Funny thing about nature. No matter how many machines are invented, scientific formulas devised, patterns studied, or any other manner of studying and breaking down information are attempted, nature always eludes man. Indian summers, roses growing beneath sheets of ice, massive boulders defying physics by propping up on tiny peaked hills, all things which cannot be explained by any sort of "normal" standards.

Why then, would the most peaceful, beautiful, and serene place around this entire wonderous campus be any different? Could there truly be normal plants growing here? Foliage not affected by the miraculous students that attend the school?

As Darrien paced the lightly dew covered paths criss-crossing through the garden, a myriad of thoughts flew through his mind. He'd been here once before, picked a rose for that girl named Dango, she ended up turning it down and he spun a slight windmill maneuver on the ground to save the flower so that it landed in Amber's hair. That was it, he hadn't spent any time at all exploring the area.

On his walk he passed several uncommon, interesting, and beautiful plants, but none undocumented. With growing disappointment, he continued walking until he came upon something he hadn't come across in his studies. A small patch of flowers, somewhat hidden toward the back of the garden, practically deprived of nourishment.

A yellowish pigment filled the petals, five in all, arranged evenly around a pinkish stigma, with three greenish anthers sprouting from behing the petal shields. A most peculiar flower indeed.

He pulled one of the flowers from the ground, for closer examination. A slender hand, covered in a white linen glove, holding a uniquely colored flower. In addition to its peculiar coloring, a few more strange qualities were apparent. For instance, when he lucked it from the ground, another immediately grew in its place. When he held it in his gloved hand, none of the coloring had rubbed off from the flower.

Dressed in his usual lavish manner, khaki linen sports jacket, bright orange shirt, orange shades, cream white linen pants, and brown wingtip shoes, he had to look quite out of place examining the flora like that.

Re: Amidst the flora (open)

Hawthorne adored the Garden, and she spent as much time as possible here. Mind you, she had mostly been here during the night time, seeing as it was hard to get away during the day. Besides, it was always so full of people. She preferred to commune with nature on her own terms, uninhibited by the prescence of others, especially male others. They could be rather irritating, after all. So today, she headed out while the dew was still on the ground, her long leather skirt brushing the grass tips.

Pushing her long black braids back from her face, she looked around. Her knee-high moccasins were spreading dampness to her toes, which she wiggled with displeasure. Ah well, they were laced loosely, so she could remove them if they became too much of an issue. She was looking for her tree, but the garden looked so different with the sun shining down upon it.

As Hawthorne approached her space near the back of the garden, she realized she was not alone. The girl with the piercings was unsure as to what she should do. She could back away now, turning and leaving before the boy noticed her prescence, or she could approach him and introduce herself.

On the one hand, meeting new people was rather difficult for the girl, on the other, it would be nice to know someone who might not be linked to Jun-Bo, like all the others of her group except for Datu and Lucien. Sure she had feelings for the samurai, but all she ever did was watch him pursue other women, and that could be exhausting. Besides, it looked like the spikey-haired fella had found something interesting.

Taking a deep breath, she screwed up her courage to approach him, and then changed her mind. She couldn't do it, she couldn't approach someone that good looking. She'd head for a different part of the garden instead. Carefully, trying to pretend like she hadn't been standing there staring at him for the last however many minutes, she followed the path that passed by the boy.

Re: Amidst the flora (open)
The miracle of discovery was afforded to such a great few in this day and age, so when Darrien couldn't place a name with this particular piece of nature he'd stumbled across he was filled with gleeful, scholastic exubarence. What to name it? This would require a trip to the library. What a tragedy it would be if someone had discovered this before him, which they probably had, since someone must have planted this garden at one time, but those weren't thoughts he'd entertain.

When he turned heel to make his way back to the main campus building, he saw he was no longer on a stroll all alone. Perhaps this girl was a botanist that could tell him what the name of this flower was? Not too likely, but worth a shot right? Perhaps not as much, but he wasn't one to let his primary impulse be pushed aside, so he was going to approach her. Her? This was a female student, of course he'd have to approach her! But how? Inquiries on botanyweren't things you'd likely bring up to someone unfamiliar with the subject, perhaps a different course was to be taken?

Gung ho as ever, Darrien wondered in the general direction of the girl with as much of a plan as Napoleon's "First, we'll arrive. Then, we see what happens." initiative. That has a solid ring to it, perhaps it could be a personal motto? He'd have to check the exact quotation before speaking it allowed to anyone, couldn't appear foolish for any reason.

Just like that he was a mere couple paces behind her, and hadn't yet thought through a conversation starter. No matter, he was good on his feet, he'd just start speaking, then things would begin rolling along before he knew it. Right?

"Never really expect to find anyone else around here. Most of the other students spend their days training to become stronger in the gym or meandering downtown. What brings you out to the garden this fine afternoon?"

"Never really expect to find anyone else around here. Most of the other students spend their days training to become stronger in the gym or meandering downtown. What brings you out to the garden this fine afternoon?"

Perhaps it had been too wishful to think that someone as flamboyantly attired as this boy would just wander by in the garden. Still, he was rather friendly and confident in his approach, so she couldn't be rude and cut him like she felt inclined to do. Besides, his nature was so friendly and infectious she had to respond, she even gave him a small pierced-lipped smile.

"Oh. Aanii. I suppose I'm not really one for formal equipment-based training, and buildings make me more than a little nervous. The garden reminds me of my odaynahwaynsun, I guess."

That wasn't entirely accurate. Most of the reservation she had grown up on had been filthy and poverty-stricken. Only a few areas, down by the quarry, and on the forest edge, had been anywhere near as lovely as this place, or the forest she had not yet made it out to explore. The bugwayji she was used to was less . . . organized than this though.

"What about you? You seem like one who would be more at home in a shopping mall or special designed training room than picking weeds with the nature-children. At least, most zhaagnaash are."

Re: Amidst the flora (open)
Darrien's look was often confused to reflect his attitude toward life, which was quite a common mistake. Not a complete mistake, but it skewed his perceived purposes somewhat, and he couldn't put a finger on why. The way he dressed, his mscular physique, and his brash, carefree attitude made him seem the "preppy" boy type, only interested in the social aspects of high school life. Thus was not the case.

"Oh. Aanii. I suppose I'm not really one for formal equipment-based training, and buildings make me more than a little nervous. The garden reminds me of my odaynahwaynsun, I guess."

He had a rather keen mind to him, quick wit, and an expansive vocabulary. That being said, she spoke words he couldn't begin to define.

"Reminds you of your whaty whaten?"

Open mouth. Insert foot. It was obvious by the face he made after he spoke that it had been a rather careless thing to say. He was doing miraculously today, discovering a unique flower, meeting a new girl, then making an ass of himself. Not quite the trio of events he'd imagined when he thought about the day.

"What about you? You seem like one who would be more at home in a shopping mall or special designed training room than picking weeds with the nature-children. At least, most zhaagnaash are."

Here's where the generalization came in. He certainly didn't look like nature was his thing, that he was more interested in working out than taking in the natural beauty of the surrounding areas.

"Gotta stop and smell the roses once in a while, keep it on the level."

What a feeble attempt at a save. He swept the flower he had picked moments ago under her nostrils to add to the smelling the roses point, then smirked coyly, choosing to assume that zhaagnaash meant "attractive males".

Re: Amidst the flora (open)

Hawthorne was curious about the white boy in the garden. Zhaagnaash tended to prefer their concrete jungles to the more natural areas. Obviously this boy was different though, so she gave him a small, shy smile, completely at odds with her pierced face.

"Reminds you of your whaty whaten?"

She laughed good naturedly. A lot of people were confused when she forgot words in english, or just randomly peppered her speech with Anishinaabe phrases. Sometimes she couldn't help it though.

"My odaynahwaynsun. It means village in the language of my father's fathers."

"Gotta stop and smell the roses once in a while, keep it on the level."

"Not just the roses, but the asters and hybiscus as well. The garden is full of many wonders, sir. I spend as much time here as possible, it is a wonder we have not encountered one another before now."

She shied away when he swiped the flowers under her nose though, and blushed furiously. She would never convince people she was tough if she kept jumping every time someone moved fast around her. She was not a skittish person, or at least she was trying to convince herself of that point.

"My odaynahwaynsun. It means village in the language of my father's fathers."

Darrien was many things, but a xenophobe wasn't one of them. Uneducated, at times, maybe, but certainly not xenophobic. He cocked his head with intrigue, forgetting completely about the flower he'd discovered and had been covetting since he picked it from the patch he'd found when he first walked into the garden.

"That's two things I've discovered today. This blossom, and this language you speak of. What's it called anyway?"

Not often had he discovered two things he knew absolutely nothing about in the same hour, unless of course he'd set out to do so. This was a walk of leisure, it was quickly taking on a studious tone.

When she ducked away and began to blush at his pass, he quirked a smirked into his lips and looked hard to trail her eyes.

"Make that three things I've learned today, completing the hat trick."

Re: Amidst the flora (open)

Darrien seemed to be intrigued about something, but Hawthorne wasn't sure what it was about. Could it possibly be her, or something she had said that had drawn this handsome fellow's attention? No. Not a possibility. She just wasn't the type to keep the interest of someone like this for periods of time, at least, that was what she believed. She supposed the evidence of Kane and Jun-Bo's attention would prove her wrong, but she had discarded those two as flukes. Jun-Bo was a kind soul, and Kane wasn't exactly what one called clever after all. But this man had it all, intelligence, appearance, wit . . .

"That's two things I've discovered today. This blossom, and this language you speak of. What's it called anyway?"

She quirked her own head to the side mimicking his posture. That was more interest than most people showed in her history, or her culture, and she was suddenly glad. She had no problem telling people about either subject pertaining to her failing race. The best defense, she always said, was education. And there would need to be a lot of education to prevent the ways of her people from disappearing completely. This was a small thing she could do for the people she had abandoned to come learn about herself and her powers.

"The language is Anishinaabe. It's the language of the Ojibwe people of south-central Canada. Other tribes, like the Chippewa, also share the same base language, but there is, of course, variation as you spread out from the central point."

She tried to stop blushing as he followed her eyes, maintaining contact despite her every attempt otherwise. His was a hard gaze to avoid, especially since his eyes were so lovely. Hawthorne just didn't have the kind of experience needed to combat the attentions of a playboy such as this one. When he spoke again, she gave up. Looking him full in the face as she blushed hot enough to fry an egg.

"Make that three things I've learned today, completing the hat trick."

"Three things? What is the third?"

Re: Amidst the flora (open)
He'd gone all around the state of New York with his father when they were hiding from those men, but never had they ventured up north. The prospect the ID check at border patrol might tip off the men to their location made this a complete no no, so he was deprived of the experience of Canada.

"The language is Anishinaabe. It's the language of the Ojibwe people of south-central Canada. Other tribes, like the Chippewa, also share the same base language, but there is, of course, variation as you spread out from the central point."

"I haven't heard a tribal dialect spoken with any fluence since that gentelmen with the feathers for underpants wandered into my father's garage when I was six. He screamed something that sounded like one of those road runner cartoons. All I remember hearing was something that sounded like 'Meep Meep'. Yours sounds worlds more interesting."

Watching the color in her face change from cool complected to firey red was pleasing to him. He rolled a coin over his knuckles, taking a second to think.

"Three things? What is the third?"

"It's cold out here. Warm for the season, but still cold, wouldn't you say? The function of cutaneous blood flow is nutrition of the skin and regulation of body heat. The higher the cutaneous blood flow, the more heat radiates. The third thing I've learned, or rather reinforced I suppose, is that cutaneous blood flow is affected by more than just exterior temperture, but..."

Rolling the coin around to a stop in his palm, then cupping his hand with the cold coin beneath her chin, and pulling it away quickly to reveal a white portion of skin the size of the coin.

"...interior temperture as well."

His remark was followed by the rapid recoloration of her skin in that spot to match the rest of her face, which would clearly be blushing still.

"Well, I'm glad that my language entertains you, zhaagnaash. It certainly is one of the most beautiful languages of the Oshkibimadizeeg. And I say that with no small amount of pride."

Still, it was hard for her not to blush. She was so inexperienced, and he was very suave. He played to her vanity, to her insecurity, pretty much to anything she left exposed. Somehow she would have to free herself from this situation before he made a fool of her. She was pretty sure that that was the only place which this could be heading, and then he started what sounded like a carefully memorized lecture..

"It's cold out here. Warm for the season, but still cold, wouldn't you say? The function of cutaneous blood flow is nutrition of the skin and regulation of body heat."

Damn he was smart. Perhaps it was her home-schooling, or her ESL, but there as a word in there that she just didn't understand. She was usually pretty good with the four-bit words, but this one was beyond her experience. She made a mental note, amidst all the blushing, to look it up when she got back to her room.

"The higher the cutaneous blood flow, the more heat radiates. The third thing I've learned, or rather reinforced I suppose, is that cutaneous blood flow is affected by more than just exterior temperture, but..."

He reached out and touched her face, and she nearly lost it. Her eyes rolled back, displaying the whites like a shying horse, and she took a step backas he pulled his hand and the coin away. A look of sheer terror crossed her face, and she whipped her head from side to side, desperately searching for an exit.

"...interior temperture as well."

"That's very nice, Mister, but I should really be . . . somewhere . . . else. I . . . have to feed my fish . . . or wash my hair . . . or sommat . . ."

She was being rude, but she didn't care. Her breath was speeding up and she was on the verge of a full-out panic attack, like she had had with Jun-Bo. Even he didn't usually touch her face . . . Desperate to escape she started backing up slowly towards the trees.

Were their boundaries here he'd overstepped? Something he'd said, or done, or a combonation there of had been met with an adverse reaction, and he couldn't figure out why.

She began backing away, like he was a mouse and she was a comically overweight, small ankled, large reared old lady; Darrien couldn't help his first impulse, so he played along assuming she was playing a possum game. The thrill was in the chase after all.

He took a step away from her, turned his hips to walk away, but stopped. Craning his neck so that he was once again facing her, he offered a viscious smirk.

"Be sure to rinse and repeat love, no one reads the bottle any more."
