Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin stopping by Wild Adventures
Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin stopping by Wild Adventures

Nature-show enthusiasts seem to come in two flavors.

You're either a Crocodile Hunter person who favors the wacky Aussie Steve Irwin, or you prefer Jeff Corwin and his coral snake tattoo.

If you're in the latter camp, plan a visit to Wild Adventures in Valdosta Monday. Corwin is scheduled for a meet-and-greet by the Giraffe Overlook.

The Massachusetts-born naturalist said in a telephone interview that he's always had a fascination for wild creatures.

"When I was 6 years old, I found a garter snake in my grandmother's back yard," Corwin said. "I grabbed the garter, it bit me on the arm and I went inside with this snake hanging off me."

From then on, Corwin was hooked. At an age when most kids are building forts, Corwin set up his own nature museum in his back yard.

"I put an old skull in there, a beehive, a wasp's nest, bird's nest, that kind of thing."

Now that he's grown up and has a child of his own - daughter Maya Rose is 2 - Corwin said kids have more opportunities to learn about the natural world.

"When I was little, kids were setting GI Joes on fire in the back yard," Corwin said. "Now there's better curriculum in the schools."

The flip side is that natural habitats are disappearing as development increases, Corwin said.

"It's a real conundrum. You have people out there that want to learn more, but there are fewer places for them to do it."

With Corwin's new show, "Corwin's Quest" on Animal Planet, he illustrates different "nuances of nature" such as diet and teamwork. His previous series, "The Jeff Corwin Experience," was typically set in one region for an entire episode. The new series hops all over the globe.

"For the episode on teamwork, I head to Costa Rica to see army ants," he said.

Then he goes to California to witness Harris' hawks hunting as a team, using an Energizer bunny as bait. He also heads to the jungles of Uganda to see how chimpanzees socialize.

An episode can take three months to produce, and Corwin is still working on production for the 13-episode series. He said it's tough being away from his family for so long, but at times he can take them along.

"I spend more time with my production crew than I do with my actual, biological family," he said.

The rock star schedule doesn't come with the accompanying pay scale and luxury accommodations, he said. "I've been known to fly on cargo planes to the middle of nowhere."

For his public appearances, Corwin said he gets all kinds of questions from his fans.

But don't ask him if there's a rivalry between him and any of the other nature show hosts. They've never met, and Corwin prefers "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" to his home channel.

"When I come home, the last thing I think about is Animal Planet."

Luv the picture. Too bad I don't live close enough to go see the meet and greet. Haha Family Guy and Simpson. I knew there was a reason I liked him.

Nice pic. Why does everyone always have to go to the rivalry question? oy.

I know huh. It is like that with everything from sit coms to reality shows. It's like they think that all people that have the same type of job hate eachother. Dorks

You all are right.I like them both-They approach things differently but their goals are the same-conservation and education. I like Corwin's new show and I will like Steve's new show when it finally airs-soon, I hope.
