Ariadne Fortuna - Death Eater
Character Name: Ariadne Fortuna
Occupation(s): Death Eater/Researcher into dangerous potions and concoctions for the Ministry of Magic
Character's Physical Appearance: Tall, willowy and graceful, Ariadne’s appearance is regularly described by those who meet her as ‘stunning.’ Her blonde hair reaches her waist in length; is very smooth and straight, and always worn loose. Her eyes are baby-blue in colour and are said to sparkle, though with happiness or malice no one is ever quite sure. She stands at 5ft7inches and has a fairly slim build, with gentle curves in all the right places. She generally dresses in long skirts and silk blouses, favouring the colours green, black and red, wears high heels and turns heads wherever she goes. She has been mistaken for a Veela on several occasions, but she is just naturally beautiful.
Character's Personality: Beneath Ariadne’s beauty however is a heart of stone. She is cruel, unfeeling, and treats others as she would never dream of being treated. She has a very short temper, so bad that she tends to make things explode when angry. She cares for no one but herself, looks down on most others and feels that muggles or those of muggle descent are inferior. The only people she has ever truly cared for are her parents, and since their murder 12 years ago she has become a lone spirit, refusing to let anyone else get close. She has no end of offers from men, but turns every one of them away, preferring to look out for number one at all times.
Character's History: Ariadne was the only child born to wealthy parents and so was very spoilt. She spent the first few years of her life in England but moved to Norway at the age of seven when her father was appointed British Ambassador to the Norwegian Ministry of Magic. She attended Durmstrang Institute from the age of eleven and was educated in the Dark Arts by Igor Karkarof, the then-headmaster.
When she was fourteen, Ariadne’s father was promoted and the family moved back to England. Ariadne was transferred to Hogwarts and hated it, mostly due to the lack of Dark Arts training it provided, concentrating instead on defense. Ariadne was a bright student but after her move back to England she refused to apply herself and, while she didn’t fail her OWLs, she only just scraped passes. At NEWT level she took a greater interest in her work, deciding it was her only option, and gain high marks in Potions (her best subject), Transfiguration, History of Magic and Charms. Due to her talents with Potion making (and a few strings pulled by her doting father), she was offered a job in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, working on research into dangerous potions and concoctions.
Unable to ignore the pull towards the Dark Arts, Ariadne continued to study books full of Dark Magic, making regular visits to Knockturn Alley and reading while not at work. On one of her trips down there, she ran into Lucius Malfoy, whom she knew from the Ministry and was working for Lord Voldemort, attempting to recruit new Death Eaters just after Voldemort’s rebirthing party. He saw the kind of books Ariadne was buying and invited her over for dinner. Over a three course meal he explained to her about the Death Eaters and she was entranced. Having heard about them and Lord Voldemort from his previous reign of terror she had always wanted to be involved, but had never known how. Once he was sure she was the right sort of person to be a Death Eater, Malfoy took her to one of the meetings where she was accepted as a fully fledged Death Eater. She was very well placed in the Ministry to report back about the latest methods of causing harm and defending against it, and was also able to research into dangerous poisons under the cover of her job, where she was supposed to be researching antidotes.
Ariadne was not involved in the battle in the Department of Mysteries, as she was a fairly new recruit to the Death Eaters and didn’t want to risk losing her important position in the Ministry if anything went wrong. She continued her work developing potions and poisons for the Death Eaters to use, and just after the recapture of the Death Eaters after the DoM battle she was instructed to use one of the more vicious poisons on a Ministry member. She slipped it into the coffee mug of one of her co-workers in the department, killing them as soon as they drank it. The buzz she gained from the panic surrounding her was unlike anything she’d ever experienced, and she eagerly awaited her next instruction. Several more people were to be poisoned, and then, to take the heat off herself, she administered herself with a small amount of the Draught of Living Death and was taken to St. Mungo’s for treatment.
When the second war broke out, one of the main targets for Death Eaters was Ministry members and their families. Every couple of weeks, Voldemort’s followers were given names of people to kill, and were expected to complete every job. One fateful evening, Ariadne was given her instructions as usual, but was horrified to find that her parents, the only people she’d ever cared for, were her target for that night. Being unable to help herself, she refused to do the deed and suffered severely under the Cruciatus curse for her disobedience. On returning home in serious pain, she saw a sight that almost made her heart stop. The Dark mark was floating above her parents’ house. Someone else had been sent to do the task she’d been unable to complete.
The murder of their parents would be enough to make most wizards abandon the death Eaters completely, but not Ariadne. She continued to work for them, purely for the sake of keeping them close by. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer became her mantra. She fought in the second war, surviving where many of her fellows fell and continued to work with the Death Eaters after the demise of Voldemort. The only thing that stopped her abandoning them, the only thing that made her continue killing, was her desire for revenge. Her determination to rise through the ranks and gain power was the one thing keeping her going, hoping that one day, the opportunity would arise for her to avenge the only two people she ever cared about. She’s still biding her time, still waiting to strike.
