Artificial Intelligence
OOC: Here's something out of line with my usual roleplays...one that involves angst, sadness, melodrama, and all manner of good things. There's a little action, but generally, it's not a happy one.
To start, I need a pair of older DDs who want a child...another son.
You'll see why as I begin...

And only the sun can begin to explain
how children are apt to forget to remember.

-- e.e. cummings, anyone lived in a pretty how town

*The scene begins in the meeting room of a large corporate convention. The man hosting it is named Guido Fantoccini. He is an emaciated little Italian man, and he is here to post his new ideas on cybernetics...on the creation of artificial humans. Among the grim board members is the grown Osamu Ichijouji, vice president of Kysakaru Cybernetics. He sits as Fantoccini begins.*

Fantoccini: Since the dawn of time, man has dreamed of creating life, as the God who created us must have done in his time. And lo...we have almost perfected it. You, my friends, have seen the great advances in modern artificiality. We have made beings that are almost human. They look human, they feel human, they act human...but they aren't.

For example, Eliza....come here.

*The female android glides swiftly over to Fantoccini, who produces a needle, and pricks her arm. She gasps. Fantoccini moves the needle toward her again, and she moves away, producing muffled giggles from some corporate heads.*

Eliza, how did that feel?

Eliza: It caused me physical pain and damage.

Fantoccini: But how did that make you feel, that I would poke you like that?

Eliza: *cocks her head to the side* That you wanted to pierce my flesh with small sharp objects.

*This elicits a smile even from Osamu.*

Fantoccini: But what did you feel? Angry? Hurt? Betrayed?

Eliza: No.

Fantoccini: What is love, Eliza?

Eliza:*stands up and begins undoing various buttons and buckles, till Fantoccini quickly commands her to stop.*

Fantoccini: What have we created, ladies and gentleman? Eliza, open.

*The robot's human face slides away, and her braincase opens, revealing the metallic shell underneath.*

A very expensive toy. More than most toys can do, I'll admit...but still, these are not REAL people. They don't fit into modern society. They are bound to the constraints of their A.I. We know that technology can be advanced further...indeed, thanks to blueprints based on the Agents of old, we now have robots who can adapt, who can understand small human notions like privacy, who can eat human food and not be harmed.

But I suggest we go further, that we endow our artificial constructs with emotions, with morals, with more than a neural net and a set of protocols. With the capability to be like real people. Ladies and gentleman, I suggest we make a robot that can love. A robot child.

*There is applause, but then Osamu stands.*

Osamu: Your idea has merit, Mr. Fantoccini. But this raises all sorts of controversy and questions...there is already a large amount of anti-mecha sentiment. And this mechanoid child has already been done...he was Agent David of the Syndicate. A brutal killer.

Fantoccini: Which is what I wanted to talk to you about, Mr. Ichijouji. Fantoccini is the world's TOP hard/software producer for mechanoids...but we do not produce bodies. Kysakaru does. No entity in the world has such access to ideas and blueprints from the forgotten Syndicate masterminds as you. Indeed, you wear proof of its handiwork under your coat.

*Fantoccini pauses, and he looks very serious.*

I believe that Fantoccini Ltd. can transform, with its programming, even a ruthless Agent into a loving child, who will truly care for his family.. I wish to test the experiment on Unit 89-58.

*Osamu fixes Fantoccini with a steely stare.*

Osamu: But there is another question this raises, Mr. Fantoccini. If a robot can give such unconditional love toward a human....what is the human's responsibility to the mechanoid?

*Fantoccini, doesn't respond. Osamu leans over the table toward him and points his finger directly at the small man.*

What will you do, Mr. Fantoccini, if humans *fail* in their duty toward the mechanoid?

Fantoccini: *quietly* The project will be declared a failure and go into confidential files.

Please, Mr. Ichijouji....

*He extends his hand, almost pleadingly, toward Osamu. The Ichijouji slowly reaches out, and grasps it. Fantoccini smiles, and the room erupts with wild cheers. Osamu leans in toward Fantoccini and whispers:*

Osamu: Meet me at the front of the Kysakaru building at 5:00 tomorrow. Come alone. I must go and notify local law enforcement, now...sayonara.

*Turning briskly, Osamu goes to a phone and dials up Tiren's number.*

Tiren? Tell Ray that the deal is go. I will be taking Mr. Fantoccini on a little tour of the Vault. If you'd like to come along....

Re: Artificial Intelligence
Tiren-Osamu...you know I don't like this, for the record. Ray still practically has a fit every time David's name is mentioned. I understand this is important, but...it doesn't feel right to me that people should be artificially creating life like this. I'll come along though, as a personal favor to you.

Re: Artificial Intelligence
*Constantine stands in the back of the auditorium*

'tis not well that they decide to give emotion unto a robot....for if they do....'t could feel sadness....and pain...

And if somebody corrupted the code, the robot could display fanaticism....even to the point where 'twould violate Asimov's laws, that a robot should never hurt a human.

But those laws have been violated already....I must speak to Tiren about letting me into the program. If worst comes unto the worst, I might be needed to restore the robot to 't's original program....

OOC:: This should be a good RP.....

ooc: You want someone to take David in? Let Nate and Jenn take him in!!! It would be so ironic since Nate was David's original target.

NO!! Don't push the Big red Button!! I wanna do that!

OOC: *grins* Sounds good...

BIC:

Osamu: I understand completely, Tiren... but after all, the Agents were androids. Maybe the newer models *can* be reprogrammed...this could be a chance for David to redeem himself.

We have to try...although I think Fantoccini is going about this entirely wrong, we must give him and David a chance.

Re: Artificial Intelligence
Tiren-alright...better leave Ray out of this one though, he hated David with a passion, and I don't think that'll change just because of the new personality, not right away at least. If you want me to bring backup, I could enlist Falcon...

OOC: I certainly am.

*The group arrives at what appears to be a huge military bunker, dwarfing the vehicles they arrive in. Osamu is grim and reserved, and Fantoccini seems very nervous. The Ichijouji hands his card to the guard at the door, who puts it through. They then must be fingerprinted, given a retinal scan, have their DNA tested, and submit to a psionic reading.

Only after all this is the group allowed into the corridors of the Vault...where once the Syndicate worked its evils. They pass several rooms filled with dissected and inactive Sentinels, along with other bizzare robots. There are also some bubbling tanks filled with biological experiments. Some doors are completely sealed. Fantoccini wonders why aloud. Osamu informs him that they were interrogation chambers. That shuts Mr. Fantoccini up.*

Osamu: I'm afraid you'll have to hold your response, Nate....we're here.

*A pair of huge doors grind open, and the group walks inside a huge technological nightmare of a room. On the walls, in glowing green stasis fields, hang the lifeless forms of the A.I. Units once known as the Agents.*

Fantoccini: Oh my....

Osamu: *points* David's that one. Whatever you do, Fantoccini-san, don't touch ANYTHING. The results could be disastrous. I alone know the Syndicate's workings here.

*Walking cautiously to a panel near David's inert form, Osamu presses in a code. The statis field crackles and disappears, and a series of long mechanical cables lower David's form toward the ground...*
