Atan's Story Part I: Ambush
Atan and Kezib give chase, splashing down the muddy streets of the town, maneuvering through the oblivious crowds. Atan is cautious, though, and lets Kezib move a few strides ahead while he keeps an eye on the alleys for anything suspicious.

The man is swift and seems to know the terrain well. Passing into a small plaza surrounded by a number of narrow lanes and dark alleyways he turns a corner and plows into a dense knot of drunken soldiers. Both the fleeing stranger and two of the mercenaries fall hard onto the cobblestones, all three cursing loudly.

Kezib and Atan are only about twenty feet up the street when the collision occurs.

Re: Through the crowd
Kezib bounds up to the group of rough looking men and dives on the man he was chasing, who is already tangled with two of the mercenaries. The scuffle attracts a lot of attention, not least of which from the soldiers who seem to think a pair of strangers have picked a fight with their companions. Hands go to weapons as they shout and curse at Kezib and the cloaked figure.

Re: Through the crowd
Atan starts to slow immediatley upon seeing the knot of fallen men and Kezib reaching roughly for the stranger. Pointing at the stranger as he advances, "Cowardice on the battlefield and then stealing from the honored dead! You will answer to the judge for this." Pulling two gold from his pocket he turns to face the fallen mercenaries, "Please let the magistrate compensate you for your unfortunate run in with this cur. For helping us apprehend him, a gold a piece."

Re: Through the crowd
Kezib wraps up his opponent in a very uncomfortable looking wrist-lock, the monk's knee pressing down on the side of the man's throat. Atan's confident declaration and flashing coins are well received by the soldiers, who drag themselves up off the cobblestones. Their companions look a little disappointed, in fact, at not having been run into themselves. A gold Lunar for being an unwilling roadblock is quite a prize.

Atan hands over the coins and looks down on Kezib and the stranger, contemplating how to get the man up and moving safely. Yet, a moment later the wary elf knows he's in trouble.

A pack of men suddenly move in to flank Atan, each of them wearing the distinctive green and grey mottled cloaks of the Merek Lek. Atan can discern immediately that these men have probably never set foot in a forest in their lives, simple mercenaries of the town. Atan's hand reaches for his blade and he makes to maneuver out of the knot of men, but he finds he is suddenly unable to move. In a split-second the elf looses all control of his muscles and nearly collapses to the cobblestones. A pair of the newcomers, grinning evilly, step in and take hold of his arms, breaking his fall.

"Whoa, brother, careful," one of them says. "What has this one done to you?"

Atan, his eyelids still open, stares uselessly at the ground while the half-dozen men swarm over him. One of them points an accusatory finger at Kezib and shouts, "unhand our brother you wretched Olmani dog!"

The first group of soldiers looks very confused, and seems keen to give the large band of determined men some space. Kezib, his hands still occupied with holding down the stranger, stares up at the gang of men that have enveloped the suddenly limp form of Atan. Everything is happening very quickly, and he is sure both he and Atan have been set up. Time is of the essence.

Re: Through the crowd
Seeing Atan drop the way he did, and the current situation, Kezib realizes that there isnt much that can be done. With his knee in the guys back, Kezib will stand up, hands out, in a non threatening manor.

"I am unarmed" he says.

Re: Through the crowd
Kezib stands up and faces the callous brutes and their merciless stares. These are obviously not Merek Lek, and in unison four of them advance on the bald monk. One of the thugs, the only one in fact with even a glimmer of intelligence in his eyes, steps towards Kezib and flicks a two foot baton of weathered oak into his hand from where it hung on a leather thong.

"Unarmed? Good."

Kezib is quick and manages to get up a bare handed block, but the baton shifts at the last moment and cracks him painfully on the forearm. Suddenly the other three are on him, swinging batons with cruel precision. Kezib is hit again in the side of his left knee and almost goes down. He can hear the man behind him scramble up to his feet.

Re: Through the crowd
If at all possible, Kezib will try to weather the storm, and try to escape, calling out for the rest of the group. Escaping not to run away but to try to get a better defensive position.

Re: Through the crowd
Kezib thinks he and Atan must have run a couple hundred feet down the crowded street chasing the stranger. His other companions are nowhere to be seen.

Parrying desperately, Kezib tries to maneuver away from his attackers. Dodging around the corner of a narrow wooden stair nearby he manages to force the thugs to come at him two at a time. This they do, pushing in against him in a wave of muscle and armor.

One of the men rushes in, trying to grapple with the entrenched monk and gets a powerful blow to the face for his trouble. The man's face explodes in blood, his nose shattered into a dozen pieces. The thug drops to the ground at Kezib's feet, groaning pitiously.

A second man charges in and tries to get a hold of the wirey Kezib, but the monk knows all the tricks and deftly avoids the grapple. Kezib is in a good defensive position, but has trapped himself against the side of a building with still four assailants surrounding him. He can only watch in frustration as two more of the henchmen drag Atan away into the darkness.

Re: Through the crowd
Seeing Atan being dragged away, Kezib will go into full offensive and try to surprise them, hoping to get past so that he can try to at least slow them down. Still calling out, for anyone to help, at this point.

Re: Through the crowd
Kezib leaps forward trying to break through the ring. His assailants are wary, however, and his first attack glances off one man's rigid leather armor without effect. Kezib follows up on the strike by grabbing the hair of one filthy thug and driving it down into his knee. The brute staggers backward, a purple lump already beginning to grow on his forehead, then suddenly drops to the ground unconscious.

Kezib finds, much to his dismay, that the fight has drawn a lot of attention from passersby, but none of them are helping. Many of the shadowy figures are cheering him on, an unarmed man against the grey cloaked mercenaries.

"C'mon baldy! Give him another one!"
"Got him in the knee they did. That'll slow the bastard down."

The crowd roars with excitement at Kezib's last maneuver, and laugh riotously when his victim dropped to the hard cobblestones.

Three more opponents maneuver around Kezib who has lept and dodged his way out into the center of the plaza. The henchmen come in swinging and Kezib deftly avoids two of the attacks, but takes another hard crack in the ribs. Kezib's vision is starting to blur as the pain and shock of his wounds are starting to take their toll.

Re: Through the crowd
Calling out, frustrated, Kezib will point to where Atan is being dragged away "Stop them!!" Then turns to his next opponent, gasping for breath, but filled with adrenaline, Kezib wont stop.

Re: Through the crowd
No one in the crowd pays attention to what Kezib is saying, though the number of people that have formed a circle around the four combatants is getting quite thick.

[Note to Atan]

Kezib dodges in quickly against one thug and makes a quick snap kick at the man's abdomen. His target is wary of ending up on the ground bleeding like his two companions, so jumps backward clear out of Kezib's range.

The other two leap forward and take wild swings at the agile monk but Kezib dodges one attack and parries the other with well practiced precision, raising a cheer from the crowd.

Re: Through the crowd
Kezib stomps down hard on one man's instep, then immediately follows up with a spinning kick to the chest. The thug tumbles backward and Kezib leaps through the gap, but is unable to push his way through the surging, riotous crowd. The last two of his opponents rush forward as the whole circle of spectators crash inward in a frenzied wave. A stout oaken baton smashes into the back of Kezib's head and the monk drops to the ground.

The last thing Kezib sees is the beginnings of a massive brawl as the bloodthirsty mob turns on itself. Pitiless hands reach down to grasp him then everything goes black.
