Boycotting Miramax Releases
Seems like Miramax/Disney are really on the warpath.
Why not an online petition for the fans to openly acknowledge their grievances with Disney for the handling of their movies by boycotting their releases. I for one will take an import release any day over a heavily edited or dubbed version. For one it infringes on the work of the director disrespecting the work he did and that of all involved in the film. Two, dubbing never really captures the true feelings expressed by the actors and often cannot retell the story properly. Of course there seems to be an exception to Disney's releases that do respect the source material. One case is the Miyazaki releases. Spirited Away had Japanese subs included on the DVD and the animation was never edited. The dubbing done by Disney was of high quality and done with the supervision of the director himself. Of course, this release seems to be an exception to Disney rules.
Disney seems to also be effected heavily by the MPAA. With the odd ratings that they had out, it's no wonder they feel that they need to edit certain releases. I remember there was some worry over the buttocks scene in Shoalin Soccer as to how that would effect the rating. Major branches of theaters seem to be scared of foreign films and even more scared of those released unrated. Of course anyone watching Shoalin Soccer would laugh at the scene because it is not showing the butt in a sexual preference. But, no pun intended, the MPAA has strict rules on nudity. Why is it that on prime time television NYPD Blue can show it on public TV and the movie theaters can keep kids from watching?
I think my rant has gone on long enough but if anyone else is interested in Boycotting their releases, please post up!
