Call of the Dragon Chapter 4
I always seem to be running for my life, never stopping. No matter how tired my body gets I know I have to keep moving unless I want to be caught by them or their humans. Panting heavily, I fold my wings closer to my body and make the full flat of my paw slam into the ground making my speed nearly double. All this in vain hope of surviving a future already written into stone.
The distant howls keep me at a constantly quickening pace. How I long for the days when this was something that could never happen, where I wasn’t constantly running for my life. Another howl sends me faster again while my muscles scream for rest I cannot give them. The pain I feel as low branches cut away at my scale’s seals becomes no more than a Weedle bite but the moment I stop, it will be stinging badly.
‘Momma! Keep moving those dark beasts are coming!’ Surprised, I run to the source of the young sounding voice and much more surprised in what I see. In the nearest clearing lay Sapphire Eyes, panting with exhaustion with her two hatchlings begging her to get up and run.
‘Sapphire!’ I almost shout. The Mightyena still in the distance I didn’t want them to have a dead give away. I nudge her muzzle gently until her eyes open.
‘Come on you need to keep moving.’ She tries to stand shaking her head.’
‘I can’t, I’m exhausted.’
‘You can Sapphire; do you want Iron Paw to have died for his family in vain? You have to keep moving, otherwise there’ll be no hope for the future.’ This seemed to encourage her and her legs become more stable.
‘Come on, I’m not leaving you behind, nor your young ones.’ Gently nudging her, I manage to make her stand up and force her to run again, as fast as her paws would carry. The two young Growlithe, though small kept the pace like experts and not showing any signs of tiring.
Though both us pant heavily, myself more so, we still run on fearing what would happen should the packs reach us. I could tell they are just about to close down on where Sapphire was when I found her, their stench fills the air like rotten flesh. Brambles straying across our path dig deeply into my paws, causing them to bleed harshly like a chink in the silver armor I’ve seen in a hatchling’s history book long ago. Though it fills me with pain, I can only clench my teeth and run on as this is nothing compared to what will happen should they find us.
‘Little Flame!’ Sapphire suddenly calls out. I notice her pace suddenly quickening and turning her feathered fur around her paws into thin silk. I hold my tail slightly higher and pull my wings even closer to my body as I try to keep up with her heart held swiftness. She pants a reply across to me with a vary eye still on her other cub.
‘Little Flame, he’s run ahead of us! We have to find him before any scouts of their pack does!’ Widening my eyes slightly seeing the urgency that has now fueled the race further, I lower my head and pull out any energy I have kept spare to power myself into running to give a young cub just a chance to survive.
[Ar01! Tense ain’t it? ]
‘Sapphire,’ I suddenly say slowly my pace gradually though still breathing heavily through my exhaustion. She turns her head and begins to slow herself but still pretty much focused on the one who had run away.
‘You go ahead. I’ll stall the pack as long as I can, you just find you missing young one and get him to wherever can still be considered safe in this world. Don’t worry about me I’ll be fine.’ She looks as though she is about to question but nothing leaves her muzzle. She smiles at me warmly.
‘Thank you; you are truly a friend to our Clan’s name.’ I nod graciously as she again begins to run, slightly more hopeful with her remaining cub.
As soon as she is well out of my sight, I stand my grown with my horn lowered and wings outspread. I had to buy them as much time as I can as soon as the dark hearted wolf pack makes their way here. They are close, my hide shudders with the sense of their closeness. I half close my eyes, wondering about the past and what destiny still lies ahead. However as soon as I feel the earth shaking slightly under the impact of many running paws, I snap back into waiting with teeth clenched tight they almost bleed.
The Mightyena are here.
The next part moves so fast, I hardly dared breathe. The blood driven wolves have slowed, looking around with confusion in their eyes and many noses flared for the scent. They wander around me as if I’m not there despite the amount of my distinct scent that must be filling their nostrils by now. I watch with my head slightly higher than I’d usually hold it, eyeing each of the pack carefully as they eye around the area themselves. The way they act is like I’m invisible or something. Daring not to make a sound, my eyes begin to fill with fury as I spy the most dangerous of them all advance out of the gathering mists, humans.
The humans walk cautiously, kicking out at any of the dark hearted beasts under their command that walks in front of them. I manage to hold my tongue as they reveal the silver objects they call guns in their paws and each of their orbs filled with more hatred than the Mightyena themselves. So strange, the humans look dressed fairly averagely despite the dirt scrubbed into their beaten clothes, tears and odd blood stains. Their smell stands so distinct, so filled with fear inducing power.
‘Come on ye mangy mutts! They ain’t here now move ye sorry asses outta here or we’ll starve ye some more!’
‘Yeah come on you idle beasts! That dragon has got to go and you standing around like lost children!’ Each human’s voice seems backed with their own snarl, their faces so dark and hidden. I notice a few of the pack’s ears flatten against their heads in a cower, fearing what may happen dare they not obey. Silently, I wonder how they can be starved anymore than the ragged fur upon brittle bones they already are.
‘I SAID MOVE IT!’ One of the humans shouts. He brings the gun to his eye and aims at one of the more paralyzed pack members.
A single bang to silence even the wind and waters and the Wolf is dead.
Scared and filled with little remorse for their fallen comrade, the Mightyena instantly move on, refusing to turn back to their human masters. I watch shocked as one takes something out of his mouth and blows out the smoke of a Seviper’s tongue.
‘That got the lazy cowards moving. This runt will make a good meal for us eh?’ The one with his newly warmed fire lowers it and smiles with rotten teeth to his comrades.
‘Better be better than the last one, hardly had a scrap on the weakling. This one ran like hell was on its tail, aye this un will be good.’ Another of the humans picks up the dead creature, still staring blankly with fear it mist filled eyes, slinging it over his shoulder by its wretched tail and chucking to himself.
‘Come on we don’t want to be missing when those stupid creatures find the dragon do we?’ Laughing heartily together, they slink off into the mists leaving nothing but an unbreakab-le silence of mist and a chill into my heart.
I have nothing for you so get the hell outta my room! *bonk and more carriot related bonks* |
