Christy The Emu
Christy
Christy is an emu whose father and siblings were hit and killed by a careless driver out at St George in south-western Queensland. She was left to die on the road; a wildlife carer rescued her from the road and contacted the Australian Wildlife Hospital at Australia Zoo for help.
Christy was paralysed, dehydrated and close to death. By a stroke of luck, Terri and Bindi were able to pick up Christy from the wildlife carer and fly her back to the Hospital at Beerwah where she immediately received lifesaving treatment. She was placed on intravenous fluids to correct dehydration and given pain relieving medication; x-rays showed that she had two fractures of her spine which were causing paralysis. She also had fractured ribs, damage to her left eye and whiplash injuries. Christy is making a slow but steady recovery in our hospital and spends short periods of time out in the sun having physiotherapy. She is now starting to use her legs.
