Class Syllabus
The subject of the Dark Arts is a vast one, containing information no can hope to teach you within the seven years you will be attending Hogwarts. But nonetheless, it is our duty as Defense professors to arm you with as much knowledge as is humanly possible. And that, students, is the basis for this class.
Beginning
In the beginning course, students will first be introduced to the Dark Arts. We will go over the different portions that make up the general subject of Dark Arts. Students will also be learning the classes and orders of curses as well as the differences between a curse and a charm. We will get into dueling as well, and students will learn how to act in a proper duel as well as the basics for dueling. We will go over a several good spells to use during a duel, some defensive as well as offensive. During this unit, there will be a lot of hands on activity, as students will be expected to perform the various spells. Students will also get the chance to have a few practice duels during class against classmates. If we have the time, we may touch on Sympathetic Magic as well, an example of this type of magic being voodoo.
Intermediate
In the intermediate course, students will be learning about dangerous creatures, usually classified as Dark Creatures. Students will learn about these creatures and their behavior, as well as how to protect themselves if they were to encounter a creature. We will be going over common, uncommon, and rare creatures, and when the creature is available, students will be able to experience the creature first-hand. The class will not only cover beasts, but Dark beings as well, such as vampires and werewolves. Students will learn how to tell if a being is a vampire or a werewolf, as well as their weaknesses. We will go over common misconceptions and get rid of the false information that they've heard over the years.
Advanced
In the advanced course, students will mostly be reviewing and preparing for their O.W.L. testing. Students will be prompted on various aspects of the Dark Arts and expected to know the basics. Aside from preparing for the O.W.L. testing, we will be looking at magical artifacts. Students will learn about Dark Artifacts and how anything could possibly be dangerous. We will dicuss lures and traps and later on wands and mirrors.
NEWT
In the NEWT course, students we be expected to have an already vast knowledge of the Dark Arts. Students will experience first hand the Unforgiveable Curses, as well as look at some of the lesser Unforgiveables. Students will also be going beyond the physical damage that can be caused by the Dark Arts and look into the mental damage that can be caused. We will look at how nightmares and dreams can be tied into the Dark Arts, as well as the basics of mind control, possession, and summoning.
