Connor Nowlin
(I’m re-applying this character, he was deleted because I was too lazy and forgot to post, -- whoops….my bad ^_^)
OOC
Email Address: midnight_rider1313@yahoo.com
Your Name: Kat
Age: 16
Code: Rita…Skeeter…Illegal…Animagus (ohhh…I actually get it now that I have the full code)
IC
Full Name: Connor Nowlin
Nickname(s): Conn (no joke), and Con Con (Little sister only)
DOB: May 21, 1992
Year: 6th
Blood Type: Pure Blood (Truly a Mixed Blood, his parents refuse to accept reality)
House Preference: Slytherin
Why: One of his most easily observed characteristics is his deep ambition to seem strong. There have always been a large number of weaknesses in his family (emotional, or physical) and it has given him this “urge” to prove that his family really is something to be afraid of. To satisfy this “urge” he has found himself lured toward clever, sneaky tricks, and dishonest ways of getting what he wants. He usually relies on his wit and cunning to do what needs to be done, no matter what the price. It really doesn’t matter who gets hurt along the way.
Physical Appearance:
He has a fairly “normal” frame for his age, as the doctor describes it, which is about 5’ 8 ½ “, and weighing close to 140 pounds. He seems to be finished growing, but looking back on the growth spurts of the men in his family, there seemed to be a similarity in the fact that most of them had a late, unexpected growth spurt, so there is always the possibility. For years he was shorter, and slightly stocky, but that appearance seemed to have worn off with time. His weight is kept healthy only by the hours he spends jogging all summer, and in nicer weather, around the Hogwarts campus (not saying that it is always in the student boundaries), without those jogs he would be slightly rounder, especially around the middle.
Recently, Connor has always been slightly worried about his public appearance, and will do almost anything until he believes that he is attractive. His shortly cut brown hair is just long enough to flip up in the front, and on the sides, where as he puts it, “is where it should stay, and where it is out of the way.” Connor tends to leave his hair up to it’s own “devices”, giving it the natural, or uncombed look (it is). Even though he can be vain, he hates spending long hours messing with his hair or just his appearance in general. Coincidentally this means that the hours leading up to any ball/ dance are extremely horrid for anyone that has the unfortunate pleasure to be within 20 feet of him. Simplicity is key; something easy to do, not time consuming, and that makes him “attractive” is what he looks for in his style.
His eyes are an interesting mix of green and gray (as much as he hates to admit it, leaning more toward the gray side), and are best described as almond shaped. He will argue with anyone that they are truly “green”, and is convinced that he has people persuaded (even though his eyes are a bit better at persuading people)
During the summer, he will usually be found outside “working on his tan”. Connor doesn’t really have any problem whatsoever getting and keeping a tan. His skin is a fairly moderate olive, which he will simply describe as tan. He has never really had light enough skin for any freckles to show, but there are a few moles scattered across his arms and chest. Recently he found that his skin color isn’t all that “tan” after a family reunion, where he was easily displayed as one of the palest in the family. His uncle told him that it was all due to the fact that he is living in inland Europe, and he needs to spend more time at activities such as swimming and beach volleyball.
When Connor isn't wearing his dress code uniform, he's seen wearing whatever he feels is comfortable. Cargo pants, long-sleeves, short sleeves, all sorts of hats, socks, boots, jackets, sweatshirts, sunglasses, and occasionally scarves. He has deemed it his trademark to wear striped socks with everything, regardless of the occasion. Whatever it is he's wearing, Connor always manages to make it look comfortable and worn in. His clothes are rarely seen without wrinkles or creases, and very few of his collared shirts actually have distinguished collars anymore. The only instance when he has been known to wear clothes that look new or extreamly well cared for is when he visits his father. He always seems to take extreme care to look perfectly groomed, and slightly preppy when around his father.
Personality:
One of Connor’s more prominent traits is his ability to lead. He has never been one to follow, and instead is usually the one coming up with the half-brained schemes that land him and occasionally friends in detention. When he was little, his family gave him a useless wand inscribed with “You have the makings of a leader, not a follower”, and he took the words to heart. He was always the first one to form teams in grade school, and has never really envisioned himself as anything without his friends that support him. His vision of himself is almost that of a ruler; he sees his friends as people he rules. Leadership can be both one of his best and worst qualities at the same time. He has the aura around him that lets people trust him to guide them, which he sees as “cool”, and then his ego swamps him, and he is looking down upon others. He is then seeing himself as better than them, superior. His tendency to take leadership too far is fairly common in his family, and some would argue is common in his house as well.
Though he is considered to be enemy to many because of his loud and brash comments, he doesn’t see himself as mean. He, like many boys his age, completely lacks any tact whatsoever, and generally says things without thinking. If he happens to offend someone, he generally responds with a comment that makes them seem wronged. Connor isn’t exactly laid back. A person can insult something that doesn’t have anything to do with him personally, and he will find a way to get angry about it. He is somewhat prideful about anything that has to do with him in any way. For example, when the insults spread to his family and friends, he becomes a whole nother person. His temper flares up, and he can’t always guarantee that the situation won’t get bloody. He defiantly isn’t afraid to bring physical abuse into an argument, and sees fighting as a way to solve things, but he prefers to fight with his wits. If he has the chance to abuse someone verbally, or crush their ego, he’ll take it. To him, it is easy to get inside people’s heads. He would rather fight intelligently over physically (due to the probability that his opponent will be larger).
Connor defiantly enjoys being the center of attention, but doesn't go out of his way to get into the lime light. He does take the opportunity to get attention whenever it shines upon him though. His sense of humor as matured slightly as he has gotten older, and while he still enjoys a good pun, he generally relies on witty and sarcastic comments. He never really has shown an extremely goofy side, probably because the atmosphere of his childhood was serious…and tends to get jokes remarking that he has “locked away his inner child”. The only thing that Connor loves just as much as being the person who others look to, is girls. He isn’t exactly girl crazy, but he knows what he likes, and isn't afraid to demonstrate his affection. Connor tends to like girls who are independent, girls who take life by the throat and show the world what they're made of, which is just how he imagines himself.
Not surprisingly, his personal vision of himself isn’t exactly accurate. He actually depends very much upon society for a sort of 'conformation' of his existence. He loves people too much to be truly independent. Even though he can be extremely pig headed when he wants to be, and he hates doing things just because someone else has done them, he needs people. Even if he only needs them to feel superior, to feel like he belongs; he isn’t completely independent. Even though Connor isn’t completely independent he is actually extremely responsible. He can’t stand people who have to be babied because of every little accident on their part. As a result, he equates getting attention, with being “perfect”. He definitely isn't a mischief maker like a lot of his friends, but when his finds himself stirring up a bit of trouble, he couldn’t imagine himself making stupid and unneeded mistakes. Whenever he does something, he has a plan. A plan of how he can make people remember him by how well something was done. In this same respect, he is a bit of a suck up. He loves to make himself appear right when in front of teachers or elders who’s opinions that he values.
Regardless of his responsible tendencies, Connor is in a constant state of procrastination (at least regarding school work). In his fifth year, he picked up the pace, and began doing more and more homework assignments, but for some reason he hates doing work outside of class. He manages to make decent marks in all of his subjects except for Herbology, mainly because he sees working in the dirt as something that the “lower” class should be doing. In class, he can generally pick up the material, especially in subjects such as Transfiguration, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. However, it isn’t rare to see him scribbling down the rest of his homework right before class starts. Contrary to appearances, Connor can be very knowledgeable about some subjects. He knows muggle fantasy and science fiction books rather well, due to the fact that he was an avid reader in his earlier years (before he got made fun of for being a “nerd”)
Luke's second worse class is History of Magic, if only because of his procrastination habits. He doesn't spend the time he should be learning the material at night, and therefore has trouble remembering the dates on the tests. He doesn’t see the point in History of Magic. Connor would very much rather look to the future than remember the past. To him the past is why his parents split up, why he is seen as a “dark wizard”. He doesn’t know what the future will hold, but he can’t see how it could be worse than the past, so he is willing to look forward to it (except when the future is a test the next day). He also doesn’t see how History of Magic will help him later in life. He isn’t sure what he wants to do with his life (he should probably get on that considering next year is his last year in school…). All he knows is that he doesn’t want to be a history professor.
History:
The one thing missing in Connor’s childhood was a loving, supportive family. He now sees any support his family has given him as being for the wrong reasons. He is convinced that his family only supported him so they could have another “perfect” Slytherin. Connor is the middle child, and was always fighting to be recognized. He hated when his parents would pay more attention to his older (twin) brothers because of their fluorescent personalities, or when his parents would give the attention to his younger sister, just because she is the only girl in the family. Connor realized that his younger brother faced the same dilemma growing up. His brother was actually fairly shy, and there really wasn’t anything that made him stand out, so early on Connor found himself very close to his only little brother.
Despite their constant battles for attention, Connor and his siblings are extremely close. They were all raised in a very strict household, and whenever something went wrong, they could all find comfort with each other. His older twins, Remington and Philip (both who hate their names), didn’t treat him like their little sibling. He wasn’t younger by much, and they had even younger siblings to pick on. Before Connor’s younger brother, Tom was really old enough to hang out with, Connor found himself being a “third wheel” to his older brothers. He never really thought that he fit in with them, and spent more time bonding with Tom. His younger sister Rachel, is 7 years younger than him, which formed a slight barricade between the two. Their age difference was what kept them apart, as well as completely different interests, and trusts. His sister completely loved their parents, something which all of the boys in the family had always found difficult.
Both of Connor’s parents were from magical backgrounds (his mother has always denied the muggle man that was somewhere in her past (giving Connor mixed blood)), and therefore had both attended a magical school. Connor’s mother, Wendy, had attended Hogwarts like her children, and had been a proud Slytherin. His father on the other hand had attended Durmstrang, and didn’t believe that Hogwarts could possibly offer his children the education that they deserved. Ben (his father), was never trusting of anyone, and constantly pestered his mother, eventually to the point where she wanted a divorce. His father couldn’t stand muggles, or anyone who sympathized with them (he called that a weakness). He and his siblings spent their entire childhood trying to gain their father’s approval (something Connor still works very hard to achieve, and values very highly). The Nowlin children had hardly grown up in a normal childhood, being surrounded by Lord Voldemort and his supporters. However, this only fueled their Slytherin attitudes, and their distinct personalities. When they weren't listening in on meetings between death eaters, and trying to please their demanding father, they were experimenting with their magic.
There was no doubt that Connor was magical, as he had often, when he was six, managed to end up with a cookie from the cookie jar in his hand whenever he felt like eating one. Therefore, when he received his letter to enter Hogwarts, Luke was absolutely thrilled (even if he had been expecting it). He had been sent to muggle school all of his life, only because his mother had wanted the children to appear innocent if the family was questioned about their involvement with Voldemort. Since Connor was the third child to receive a letter, he had seen both his brothers placed in Slytherin, and wasn’t expecting to be anything else. There was a bit of commotion when his younger brother didn’t receive a letter for the longest time, but it arrived just in time, and the family calmed down. Connor chose a small tortoise-shell kitten as his companion before he started school, and even though he now owns an owl as well, Stilt, his cat, has always been the only animal he is really close to.
Connor’s first year at Hogwarts went by quickly. It was a whirlwind of new, sights, smells, and sounds. It was completely different from anything he had ever experienced before, and he wasted no time in getting himself known. He was sorted into Slytherin the second the sorting hat touched his head, which greatly pleased him, as he knew his family wouldn’t except him if he was in any other house. Luke was greeted by an extraordinarily large amount of friends, and he quickly deemed the members of Slytherin to be his second family. Even though he found it easier to make friends within his own house, Connor never turned down friends from other houses. He saw it as an opportunity to make himself better known. Hogwarts was his home away from home, and he often felt much safer there, if only because his father wasn’t staring down his neck. While he was completely new to almost every aspect of Hogwarts, he thought himself extremely knowledgeable concerning the dark arts. He greatly lamented the fact that the students wouldn’t actually learn anything illegal, and found himself reading mostly from books sent from home. Due to the fact that Connor was slightly overwhelmed, he slacked off greatly in all of his classes, and was more swept up by the excitement of everything. He managed to barely scrape by in all of his classes, and promised his father he would do better next year.
True to his word, Connor did much better grades-wise in his second year, and surprisingly, passed his older brothers in comparison grade wise. They spend much more time breaking rules, and Connor tried so hard not to take after his older brothers. Even with his efforts, he acquired a taste for breaking the rules, which followed him well into his later years. Luke managed to keep a wide variety of friends during these years, perhaps because of his stable personality and his sense of humor, but began to realize that girls were extremely different from guys. They were a lot more interesting to look at, and they had prettier eyes. Connor sought to get a girlfriend, and achieved his goal. Big-blue-eyed Karleen was a Gryffindor that was hard to resist. However, she didn’t completly trust him, due to his house and he eventually broke it off, because he thought girls were “too emotional”.
During Connor’s third year, he was ecstatic about continuing Defense Against the Dark Arts (in hopes of learning the dark arts themselves), and was quick to become the showoff in that class. His childhood helped him out a lot during this year, because he already knew a quite a bit about the dark arts. He got amazing marks in that class, and it quickly became his favorite. However he began to get distracted once again by the female population at Hogwarts, which almost resulted in him slacking off, except he got a wonderful howler from his father which changed his priorities.
Soon it was time for Connor’s fourth year, the year he became known. After spending a summer living under his brothers’ shadows, he was desperate to get some attention. He spent a good part of the year trying to figure out how he could get people to recognize him, and finally came up with his perfect plan. He pulled it off during the winter holidays. His wonderful plan was to change every tapestry in the school so they had his name and face on them, but whenever a teacher looked at them, all they would see was a tapestry. He did get one detention off this, for looking suspicious, and since he removed the spell at the end of the year, he was hoping that none of the teachers were the wiser.
Luckily, Connor was now prepared for his fifth year. He was under strict orders not to slack off, and thus, he abandoned his trouble-making tendencies. He abandoned rule breaking for studying, and maintained higher than average grades throughout the year, while still being as sociable as possible. He continued pulling his grades up and studying hard in time for O.W.L.s, and was let off with a near perfect score in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and ending up with extreamly good marks on his other classes, except for History of Magic, and Herbology.
Now, it is Connor’s sixth year. He has a lot of things to look forward to, his NEWTS, his Career choice, and perhaps even a new girlfriend. Unfortunately, classes look like they'll be harder than ever (seeing as how the students are supposed to be more mature by this age), but Luke is far too intent on warping the minds of innocent first years, and abusing his seniority powers to care.
Roleplay Sample: (just tell me if you need more…I’m too tired to write more now)
Connor flapped one hand impatiently at his unruly hair, and barely managed to pull on a boot with the other. It was finally here, his first big date with Natalie. Quickly he glanced at the clock, and scowled at the time. Where had the time gone? It was only noon the last time I checked. How can it be 5:00 already? It is so not possible that I’m late. Allowing himself one last scowl at the clock, he grabbed his green and silver scarf off the bed, and flung his way out of the dorm, leaving the door to slam violently behind himself. Angrily stalking out of Slytherin House, Connor had a sudden brain fart. He couldn’t remember where he needed to be. He knew that he had a date with Natalie, but he couldn’t remember whether he was supposed to meet her in the great hall or in Hogsmead. Just think, you just talked to her last night, how hard can it be to remember…uggg, just think!! In his temporary rage against himself, Connor blindly wandered the halls trying to remember where he was supposed to be. All sense of time was lost to him and a dreamy fog took over his mind, to him, it was like he was trying to move in jello. None of his reflexes were responding correctly.
With a sudden jolt, Connor barely caught himself as he ran flat into a wall. The pain cleared the fog momentarily and allowed him some conscious thought. He realized in that split second that he was almost in a trance. Connor had no control over himself, no control over his actions. He tried to say something, anything. Just so someone would help him. When he opened his mouth all that came out was a mangled moan, and as quickly as the pain had come, it vanished, leaving him to melt back into the fog that was clouding him mind. He was lost in the trance, completely absorbed.
Without warning, as Connor passed an empty classroom in his non responsive state, a hand jotted out and grabbed the front of his fairly clean sweater, wrinkling what he had spent some time on to look nice for Natalie. The hand from the class room strained to pull him away from his desired path. It was like watching someone struggle with a bag of potatoes, only Connor was the potatoes. Finally after much strained force, Connor had been dragged roughly into the room, against his will.
When the Ice water hit his head, Connor jumped slightly, and immediately started sputtering and blinking. With the same effect as unbearable pain, the water brought him out of his fog. Pulling himself slowly to his feet it suddenly came to him. He had been sitting on a dusty floor, and now he was covered in water. Growling slightly under his breath, he knew he had to find his brother. Philip was in trouble this time. And there was no way Connor was going to let him get away with another one of his stupid tricks. He would finally be able to catch his brother at a prank. Leaving the room at a run, Connor was too concerned with finding his brother to think about what had happened. The remembrance of a trance was temporarily lost. There was only one thing on his mind.
Celeb Avatar: Christian Duerre
(I’m planning on coming back once Finals are over, but I won’t be posting for a couple weeks once I’m reaccepted…and I’ll get around to reapplying my other characters eventually… )
I also just noticed that the prefect poisition he once had has been filled, and that the 5th year spot is open, if you would prefer, i'll edit him so he is a 5th year rather than a 6th year.
