Cyrus Archer: Divination Professor
OOC
Email Address: SKSbastet@aol.com
Your Name: Depleti or SKS
Code: HBP
IC
Full Name: Cyrus Logan Archer
Nickname(s): Cy
DOB: February 14th, 1983
Blood Type: Half-blood
Previous School/House: Hogwarts: Gryffindor
Subject To Teach: Divination
Qualifications: Cyrus always did well in Divination while at school and was also a good student in the class. His best qualification is simply the fact that he’s a Seer, though while he was younger he hated the ability, he’s come to accept it. Because of his ability he’s done further research into the art of predicting the future and helping others discover the talent. He’s never taught before but he’s always wanted to give Seers a better name, since all the ones he came in contact with were rather frazzled to say the least, and everyone assumed as much from him.
Physical Appearance: Cy has always been a little gangly and rather thin, but has grown into a tall man at about 6’ and weighing around 180 pounds with fair skin that never seems to tan. His broad shoulders and long arms are thick with lean muscle from being a Beater since he was old enough to hold the club, and he has an iron grip with callused hands. His arms and chest are really the only part of him that’s been developed over the years, so he’s not a fast runner and he’s rather clumsy on his feet. He has large, dark brown eyes and bright yellow hair that’s best described as fluffy, though over the years he’s let it grow out. It reaches his backside now and he keeps it in a long braid or ponytail so that his nieces and nephews can play with it.
Over the years he’s been lucky, for a Beater. His face is as untouched as it was when he was a kid, thanks to careful blocking and dodging and expert flying. His nose is the right size for his face, which retains a boyish look that causes many people to mistake him for a teenager. His body has been broken and re-broken several times and he has a few scars over his body, mostly on his chest. He’s gotten more bruises than scratches however, and so his body looks normal and of course the bruises go away. However they like to pop up in random places afterward, usually spots he can’t remember even hurting.
Personality: Cyrus started out in life being extremely introverted and very shy due to his “condition.” He was worried about being teased and excluded, since most people would pity him and think him off-kilter. A couple of years into school, however, he tried to turn things around, tired of being lonely. He joined the school Quidditch team and tried to become more outgoing. Now as an adult he’s still quiet, but not totally introverted as he once was. He likes to sit and observe and only speaks when spoken to, or has something important to add. He can joke around and join in the fun when he feels like it; he even has a tendency to be sarcastic.
He has several nieces and nephews that he loves to play around with, so he has a developed fondness for younger children. Cyrus feels more at ease around kids than adults, at least in the beginning. He remembers his life at Hogwarts very clearly and can recall what the students are going through. With adults, he doesn’t know what’s going on to start with. When greeted with new adults, he stays polite and courteous, waiting to see how they react and speak to other people rather than him and then decide whether to become closer to them. Once he makes a friend he’s automatically louder and more at ease, letting his guard down and talking freely. He becomes slightly more physical too, more open to hugs or playing around.
Cy doesn’t care what people think of him for being a Seer anymore, but he is rather touchy on the fact that his magic is just slightly lacking from the average wizard due to his family history. He can do magic just fine, but it always took a while to learn new spells and he’s not as powerful as most wizards. This weakness makes him sympathetic to struggling students and he tries not to press on in his lesson plans until mostly everyone is on the same page, and he always eager to help a student. Luckily when it comes to Divination it’s not too difficult anyway.
Cy likes girls, for definitely sure. The problem in the beginning was his introversion, and particularly attractive girls still make him a little shy and bashful. He didn’t start to date until he was about seventeen, and after graduation and joining the Yellowcastles, he didn’t have much time for that. He was greatly amused by female fan letters, however, and some he keeps to this day. After both his sisters got married and had children, there was a small but noticeable pressure for him to do the same. He was the son who would carry on the Archer name, and is now at the age that his sisters tied the knot. Now that things have settled down in his life, he’s discreetly looking for that Mrs. Right.
History:
Cyrus is a descendent of a family of powerful witches and wizards (or they were a few hundred years ago). Over the generations they’ve been more than open to marrying Muggles and Muggle-born witches/wizards. However, one line of the family was cursed by a vengeful wizard (supposedly over a boy’s pet dragon that ate all his sheep. The boy refused to stop the dragon with his magic.) The boy was cursed and lost all his magic, but luckily his family still supported him. He went through life as a Squib, married a Muggle, and had several children, one of which was a son. The son ended up having flickers of magic, but never enough to be called a wizard. So, over the generations, the males in that particular branch of the family have been gradually getting their magic back. Cyrus was actually the first boy in his family to have enough to go to school with.
Cyrus’ immediate family consists of his parents, Derek and Maple, and his sisters, Tacey and Cailin. Derek is a Muggle who owns a general-type store in their small hometown, and has always supported Cyrus with whatever the boy did. Maple was a stay-at-home mom but now works at a daycare center. Tacey and Cailin have both married, and have had several children. Cyrus especially likes to play with the kids and lets them mess with his hair.
His first and second years were slow and lonely—agonizingly slow and lonely. He didn’t make any friends at all and kept to himself, hiding behind his long blonde hair. His grades were awful in the beginning, low marks in just about every class. The teachers, however, knew what they were doing so his magic developed exponentially, better than anyone imagined though still less than an average wizard. He became especially well versed in the classes involving little magic, such as Potions.
Arriving at his third year still lonely and friendless, Cyrus tried to change. He spoke up more, moved to the front of classes even if he was bad in them, and paid more attention to other students no matter their house or year. He joined the Quidditch team and became a beater, making friends with the other students on the team and also finding friends through his friends. By the end of his third year, he was feeling quite good about himself and began to pull his hair out of his face.
By his fourth year he had made several close friends, but he was hardly popular. He still had a tendency to be quiet and was still just slightly below average when it came to magical skill. Throughout the years he continued playing Quidditch and became one of the best players in the school. He also became skilled in those classes involving little magic, breezing his way through Potions and CoMC, even Divination. While at school he had several visions, even a couple of very big ones. Over the years his visions improved in clarity and length, developing along with his magic. This improvement and realization at just how blatantly useful his ability was made him less embarrassed about it, and over the rest of his school days he became immune to any teasing he encountered. It wasn’t long before the teasing stopped entirely, as a matter of fact.
Fifth year brought about the OWLs, which Cyrus was particularly anxious about. As early as December he threw himself into practicing those skills and subjects he was lacking in. The “volunteer” victim for training spells was his owl, who is still somehow alive even after all of that. His skills improved very little, since he only has as much magic as he was born with. Instead he perfected the areas of study he was already excelling in to balance out the abysmal marks he expected to get in those other magic-only areas. Cy surprised himself, however, with fairly good marks in subjects such as Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Transfiguration (except he turned an ottoman into a groundhog instead of a brown dog), and he received just about perfect grades in Potions, Ancient Runes, Astronomy, et cetera.
Quidditch was also big in his fifth year. Having had two years to play in the school, he was quickly on his way to being the best Beater at Hogwarts. That year he even became the captain of the team, as position he held until he graduated. He learned how to deal with people as a group and compromising and careful planning and studying other teams while he was a captain, and used what he learned to win the House Cup several times. His teammates bugged him several times wondering if he had Visions of games, but he never did.
In his Sixth year, while friends decided what to do with their magical lives, Cyrus just continued doing his homework. He always expected to work at his father’s store or some other Muggle-like occupation. That year went smoothly, quietly, and uneventfully. His Seventh year was not so much. He got his first girlfriend and much of his mental capacity was used up thinking about said girl, but his grades didn’t suffer because of it. Even with the NEWTs on the rise, he didn’t worry that much. He received the same kinds of marks as in the OWLs.
Upon graduating Cyrus wasn’t sure what to do with his life. He was about to go work with his dad at their family store when he was approached by a Quidditch scout for the Yorkshire Yellowcastles, a (made-up) professional league team. He eagerly joined and became a professional beater, something he never expected but certainly didn’t mind. He traveled with the team all over the country and helped them go as far as the Quidditch World Cup quarterfinals in his first year. All the traveling hurt a lot of friendships he started while in school, however, and he lost contact with a few students, including his 7th year girlfriend. Cy made friends with the other players on the team despite being the youngest one, and even found out he had quite a few groupies here and there that amused and confused him. He enjoyed playing on the team for four years, until he had a Vision. He reluctantly retired himself from the team a month before it went into financial ruin.
Cyrus had enough money to last him for several years on his own, but he was still young and wanted to find an occupation for himself. His oldest sister was always speaking of the rewards of teaching, and his nieces and nephews always said he would be a good teacher, so he decided to look into it. He focused his studies on Divination and tried out teaching methods on his relatives, discussing with his sister, and looking into schools. He applied for the Divination professor at Hogwarts and was excited to be accepted. Now he’s nervous and excited to start teaching, but isn’t looking forward to walking up and down the stairs to the classroom.
Roleplay Sample:
Cyrus had five thick books in his arms as he ambled down the hallway. He wasn’t looking forward to cleaning out that musty old tower he was to teach in. It reeked of ancient incense and moldy dust, hardly decent conditions for teaching children of any age. The books on the tables were outdated by a good ten years and there were corners of the room that looked like an alien plant was starting to take root. Crystal balls needed polishing, tea cups needed washing, tarot cards needed mending, and even the tablecloths needed to be replaced.
He readjusted the books in his arms, a new edition of Unfogging the Future published just the year before. They were the last of a group he was hauling up the stairs, and though his arms were hardly tired from the heavy books, his legs were killing him. “I guess I’ll be getting stronger legs this year,” he grunted as he put his foot on the first step. He paused and let out a sigh as he looked up the spiraling staircase.
He let out a mock cry of dismay. “Ohhhhh…What I’d give for one of those Muggle escalators.”
