Death, Dying and Cure Spells
There are different levels of injury as one goes further along the trail of negative HPs. The levels are based on the character's Constitution and Level. At each level the chance of the character stabilizing decreases, and the potency of the magic required to bring him back increases.

Z = ((Constitituion / 2) + Level)

HP = 0: Character is limited to partial actions

-1 > HP >= -Z: 20% chance to stabilize, only Cure Light Wounds or better can heal the character

-Z > HP >= -(Zx2): 10% chance to stabilize, only Cure Serious Wounds or better

-(Zx2) > HP: Dead, only Raise Dead or better

All wounded characters have a 5% chance per round to continue bleeding out after they have stabilized (the anti-stabilization). This further decline can be stopped by a Cure spell, of any type, or a successful Heal check at DC = -(HP).

So, Bob the 1st Level commoner with a 10 Con has a Z=6, so dies at -13 HP. Once Bob goes to -7, nothing but a Cure Serious Wounds spell or better can revive him. He may be nursed back to health with repeated successful Heal checks, but can't bounce back to his feet after such grievous wounds without some serious divine intervention.
