EXCLUSIVE: Ranieri Will Get The Sack - Mourinho In!
Jose Mourinho confirmed he is quitting Porto, a night after helping them win the Champions' League to move into the Premiership. He later revealed Chelsea have made him an offer to become their new manager.
Mourinho will fly to London from Lisbon on Friday to hold discussions with Chelsea.
Speaking on Portuguese television (Sport TV) he said, "I would really like to accept Chelsea's invitation."
"It will be decided in the next few days when I tell Porto's management of my intentions but the two clubs have talked."
Mourinho's Porto beat Monaco 3-0 in the Champions League final on Wednesday but he will pursue his career in England.
The 41-year old, who is planning to take a holiday and considering offers to work as a pundit during Euro 2004, is keen to resolve his future as quickly as possible, before the championships start on June 12th.
Mourinho is expected to be named as Chelsea's new manager next week, after the club get rid off current manager Claudio Ranieri.
Talking about Chelsea, he added: "One club had a serious conversation with my agent and a small conversation with me. I have given my word to them and I will not change my mind. My agent was involved in a few conversations. I want everything to be done right. I will speak to the Porto president and I hope he respects my wish to leave. There is one club I give my word to and one I would like to go to and this won't change even if I get other situations because we have won the Champions League."
Chelsea are expected to sack Ranieri within in the next few days after they held a meeting with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and chief executive Peter Kenyon at a hotel in Milan in Italy this morning.
The meeting ended after two hours and a smiling Ranieri left the hotel with his agent Vicenzo Morabito but did not comment to waiting journalists.
It seems certain now that the Italian will give way to Mourinho as coach - with Ranieri either leaving altogether or moving into a director of football role.
Kenyon told Sky Sports on Wednesday that "the situation should be resolved next week".
Asked whether Chelsea's spending power was a key factor in his decision, Mourinho said: "I think every club has a motivation. When you have money to spend you must spend well. When you don't have money to spend you have to go for the formation. The best way is to do both things. When clubs decide to change their manager they believe something is not the way to be so I want to work and enjoy my life as a manager. I love football and I love to work. The club, the board and supporters must know I go with all my heart and give everything to improve the club. I decided I would like to go when I felt in Portugal there was nothing more to win, the challenge was not big enough for me."
CF: I think this is a done deal, Mourinho will be unveiled as Chelsea 'coach' next week, and Ranieri - like I said yesterday - could be on his way to Liverpool. Whatever happens we all hope that Ranieri will be managing in the UK next season - even if it has to be Liverpool or even Tottenham Hotspur. For Mourinho, his CV just gets better and better.
You wonder what those Newcastle United fans would be thinking of - if only Mourinho followed Sir Bobby Robson to the North East as assistant, like he did to Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and Barcelona a few years ago. And when Robson finaly ends his football career - Mourinho would have been his replacement.
Anyway, I think he will do a fantastic job there at Chelsea next year - I tip them for the Premiership, FA Cup and Champions' League treble.
It will be great to see all the mind-games next season between Aresene Wenger (Arsenal), Sir Alex Ferguson (Man. Utd.) and soon to be Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho. We know all about Wenger and Ferguson - but Mourinho could add a bit more spice next season, especially after what happened between himself and Ferguson Champions' League.
What do you's think, have they made the right choice to sack Ranieri and bring in Mourinho?
