EastEnders Helter Skelter Disaster
This is from todays Sunday Mirror - I thin this is why the webcam over Albert Square on the official website has been off for some time (confidential filming).....
EASTENDERS' favourites are left fighting for their lives in a sensational new disaster storyline.
Dot Cotton and Pauline Fowler are trapped after a fairground ride collapses on them in a nail-biting episode. Viewers are left on the edge of their seats as the emergency services battle to save the pair, played by June Brown and Wendy Richards
In another tragic twist, Lynne Hobbs - played by Elaine Lordan - is caught up in the disaster and miscarries her and husband Gary's baby.
The dramatic storyline is BBC bosses' latest bid to fire the show back to the top of the soap ratings.
EastEnders had the worst figures in its 19-year history last week when just 6.4million watched Tuesday's episode.
Now TV executives are hoping the disaster storyline will put them back on top of the soap pile ahead of rivals Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
Disaster strikes during the 100th anniversary celebrations of Walford's Bridge Street Market.
A TV insider said: "The show has been reeling in recent weeks but we're all determined to turn things round. It may not be the cheeriest way of doing so, but throughout soap history disasters have proved to be ratings winners." For the centenary party, a funfair is hired by residents and placed in Albert Square. But the the helter skelter tower begins to collapse, sending residents dashing for cover.
Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) is left in a wheelchair after suffering a broken leg and arm while Dot and Pauline are trapped in the wreckage. The insider added: "It's going to be a real cliffhanger."
EastEnders is currently attracting half its usual Tuesday audience. The ratings blow has come on top of the Internet sex shame of Dirty Den actor Leslie Grantham.
The current lowly figures compare to a staggering 17 million viewers seeing Dirty Den shot by a hitman in 1989.
EastEnders bosses claim they are not worried about the ratings slump - and blame the hot weather. But ITV1 bosses were thrilled with Coronation Street and Emmerdale's success against their bitter rivals.
Emmerdale also led the way with disaster storylines - famously, most of the cast were killed off in a Lockerbie-style plane crash.
A spokeswoman for EastEnders said: "We can't comment on storylines."
Re: EastEnders Helter Skelter Disaster
Thinking about Dot and Pauline trapped in the wreckage of a collapsed big-dipper just makes me
Talk about making a noose for your own neck
Re: EastEnders Helter Skelter Disaster
More doom and glooms then?
The only way they are going to get better ratings is without all the depression, i feel really low after watching EE recently compared to Corrie which always makes me laugh.
I think they should turn Spencer queer, that would be good, or have a Anita Dobson back, i know she died but so did DirtyDen.
Re: EastEnders Helter Skelter Disaster
they should take this opportunity to get rid of boring / pointless characters like the ferrieras, billy, nanna moon and guy/ juley
Re: EastEnders Helter Skelter Disaster
Ok come on, don't be harsh, I really enjoy the twenty minute segments of the Ferreras discussing their mortgage.
