Edward "Ed" Tate
Edward Tate OOC
Name: Matt
Contacts: e-mail/MSN – FinalityX90@hotmail.com, AIM - checkyourpockets
Age: 15
Code: Rita Skeeter Illegal Animagus
IC
Name: Edward Tate
Nickname(s): Eddie or Ed
DOB: February 15th, 1994
Year: 4th
Blood: Halfblood
House Preference: Ravenclaw
Why: Edward has always been thought of as the quiet voice of reason. He’s the kind of kid you’d find sitting in the corner of a class who rebukes, gives a snide remark or wittily corrects the professor under his breath. Besides his sarcastic, quiet tone, he is extremely intelligent and can literally talk his way out of most situations. Edward is also a relatively kind person, but never spares the truth and points out what needs to be known, regardless of if it will hurt the other.
Physical Appearance: Ed is mainly constructed of skin, muscle, and bone. The boy’s high metabolism keeps his body fat down and allows a rather nice definition of muscle. However, he is not a health enthusiast. He doesn’t exercise to keep his body in shape and doesn’t work out to keep his muscle a-bulge. For a boy that is 5’9” tall you could say that it would seem a little odd that Eddie weighs in at just below 140 pounds. You might call his awkward build sinewy, lean, and slightly athletic regardless of the fact that he engages in very little physical activity.
Besides his lanky build, two striking features of this specific young man are his promising gray eyes. In a sense, they reflect his inner soul and who he is – a quiet, aloof boy. A closer look gives light to the details of these simple eyes. Beneath their clear coating, they hold two flecks of black accenting the cold irises. Just above lie the thousands of light brown strands of soft hair that fall ever so lightly about an inch above his eyebrows in a combed-to-the-side fashion. His nose, a freckled mass of cartilage, protrudes in a bulb-like manner but isn’t too offensive. Just beneath this innocence lie two relatively thin, mainly chapped, pinkish lips. To clash with the millions of freckles, he has a reasonably fair skin tone. Attached to both sides of his head are two above-averagely sized ears. Below his forever young face there is a rather large “Adam’s apple” and a neck only made impure by a few freckles. Though he has a small amount of facial hair it’s barely noticeable due to its light color.
When not in robes, you might find Eddie sauntering around with a comfortable pair of jeans on accompanied by a snug sweatshirt or loose-fitting tee. Edward is all for being cozy in what he wears and as long as he is, he minds not about what he looks like or what others think of him. Most of the time, as well, he wears an old cap with a long visor and occasionally slips on his reading glasses, even though he doesn’t read much at all.
Personality: Behind his elusive eyes, one realizes the truth about Edward Tate. He may come off as the dumb quiet kid that everyone talks about but never talks to him. The irony of this is, that in fact Ed is quite intelligent. Years beyond his classmates, Ed sits quietly for one reason – he is bored with the unintelligent banter produced by most of the other teens milling ‘round Hogwarts. Occasionally he’ll let up and listen in on a few students’ conversations and remembers what it was like to be a child and laugh at the silly things in life. Though working on it, Edward is still annoyed by most of the things people say. A bad habit it may be, and habits take time to be broken.
However, beyond acquaintances, Edward is a truly loyal friend. He’s the one that you would ask, “Does my hair look good?” and he’d simply reply, “No, it’s hideous.” Edward believes in the blunt and sometimes hurtful truth. Some people find his responses repulsive and cruel, but in the long run, he believes, the truth helps out much better than the sugar-coated comments make on your disastrous hair because after the hours of continuous laughter and finger pointing and tears, that one little white lie doesn’t help much after all.
Along with the truth comes some wit and sarcasm from Ed. He daringly tends to push the line with his sarcastic comments and witty comebacks, and, on occasion, his bold defiance has landed him waist deep. It doesn’t bother him much at all, though, because he knows he has truly defeated the person. This contributes to a rather large imperfection of Ed’s. Due to the truth and sarcasm and his cynical attitude to most things, many people read these things as a warning sign. This warning sign isn’t something Edward’s proud of – actually, he hates it. He hates the idea of being alone and often times finds himself that way.
By putting up all of these masks, Ed usually manages to find a way around dealing with his emotions and puts them off by making a joke about them. He’s very mysterious in the sense that getting to know him truly is nearly impossible. Another habit of his is maintaining a field of (contradicting enough) lies and exaggerations. Going against all that he is, Edward tends to lie subconsciously to cover up his own imperfections.
History: To spare the details of birth, I’ll just say that Edward Sebastian Tate was born to Eliza and Jeremy Tate at 4:02 AM on February 15th, 1994 in the living room of his house in Windsor. The midwife declared him perfectly healthy but was perplexed, however by the choice of having him at the Tate household. The only reason the mother gave was because she detested the thought of having her child outside the comfort of her home, but everyone knew the real reason was that she was afraid. She was afraid that, by some odd chance, her child might react in the hospital room and give way to her families best kept secret – that, for several years, Eliza’s magical identity was kept beneath whispers.
Throughout the years, good old daddy went off to work each morning and mommy dearest kissed him goodbye and gave him a farewell wave. Up until Edward’s third birthday, things were just peachy and the roads were paved, leaving no irritating bumps along the way. However, all good things must come to and end. Just two days after his birthday party, at approximately 12:00 in the afternoon, little Eddie decided to turn his leftover balloons into giant rocks. Of course, Edward was unaware of his innocent actions but the crashing of the coffee table in the living room cause quite a commotion as well as made his father very suspicious. Over the next few months Eliza’s secret began to unfold slowly before her muggle husband’s eyes with each outbreak and tantrum Ed gave. For years she worked to keep the Wizarding World from coming in contact with her because she had this strange idea that if her love knew of her true being he would be disgusted with her.
At five years old, it seemed Edward was pushing his mother to confess to his father. Eventually his mother gave in and broke the news through a few spells. Of course, the Ministry took alert to this and sent her an immediate owl. Having lied for so long, the consequences of Eliza’s actions took place with the weeks of quiet spells and, at other times, loud, offensive conversations. These soon passed after Jeremy realized the reason for her secrecy. He fully welcomed the idea of it all and told her that he loved her regardless. For Eliza, however, it was back to something she thought shunned by most. To get over these feelings, the family took many trips to places like Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. With all these strong memories flowing back to her, she forgot about a very important thing. When would Edward get his letter? There was no doubt that Edward was a gifted child, but the thought worried Eliza so. He couldn’t entirely recognize his potential as a wizard at the age of six, so, his parents worked with him and taught him what, at that point, only Eliza knew of magic. One would think a witch who kept her powers secret for so long would be a tad rusty with them, but that was quite on the contrary. She taught him well, until, of course, he received his letter to Hogwarts. From that point on, Eliza believed it was in his hands, along with his school’s, to teach him the ways of the wizard.
A couple of weeks before his departing for Hogwarts, Eliza and Jeremy took him to Diagon Alley to gather his first books, robes, and other such supplies for his most memorable moment of his life. The following weeks brought excitement and worry upon Ed and with time came the final day of his muggle-lived life.
Being who he is, Edward sat in the corner of the compartment alone on the ride along the countryside to his new, temporary home. Unlike most children, Eddie never engaged with the others on the train or gained friends. This made the ride especially long. Eventually, he arrived at the rendezvous point that he and his magical education agreed to meet at. Like any other kid that didn’t have any friends at the school, Ed picked a random spot in the Great Hall at the 1st year’s table and awaited his fate. Hours later he sat with his fellow house mates at the Ravenclaw table and eventually got around to talking and listening to groups of people. This was really all the interaction and getting-to-know-you activities he played in, because beyond them he found it futile to try to befriend anyone. The year went by and he made a few acquaintances but no more than two or three good friends. Most of his time was spent on schoolwork and staying good. The year passed slowly, but it ended and he didn’t much miss the other kids, but more so his teachers and the school in general. By the end of the week after he got home, his parent’s must’ve heard of Hogwart’s greatness more than 50 times. It was plain as day that Edward was enthusiastic about going the next year, but Eliza and Jeremy knew something was wrong when all Eddie could do was change the subject when friends were brought up. Sure he had some people he talked to, but no best friends. They understood and decided to let it go.
Round came a new year and previous event of the year passed reiterated. He watched the new first years take their places but this is where things started to change. A from the front of the table, he spotted a small boy sitting at the corner. He seemed either shy or a boy with a complex much like his own. The year wasn’t very adventurous but he got to know at least one kid around his age. They did mostly everything together and their relationship began Eddie on a new road of fun. He started to focus less on his schoolwork – not so much that he did badly but enough to let loose and have fun. Over the summer that followed, Ed invited him over a few times and showed him what muggles did. Eventually he lost contact and began frantically sending letters to his address. Eventually he was served a rather large and incapacitating blow by the people that lived at that address. It was no longer his best friends family, but a couple explaining the move that they took to mainland Europe to France. Eddie was knocked out cold and had to start over again.
After the rest of the long summer passed, Edward found himself repeating his actions on the train, at the table during sorting, and all throughout the year. Even if there were new first years or even straggling second years that were much like him and the boy he met just one year ago, he dared not take the chance of going through all of it again. He let the day slip into weeks and weeks slip into months. Finally, he thought, finals came around and he was nearly free. He intended not to change his ways but was convinced that staying on the track he was on now – studying up and working hard – was the right path to follow. School let out and he returned home. Much to the dismay of his parents, they found that it was almost as if his slate was cleared and he started everything over again. They worried a lot about their boy and wondered if the next year things would change. The weather of the hot summer began to dull down and they knew a perilous journey lay ahead for Eddie once more.
Roleplay Sample: “Eddie! Pass the ball!” A voice bellowed from across the yard. He juked a boy off his trail and tossed the rugby ball down the line to the younger child running with bare feet, kicking up blades of grass as he ran full speed. Upon catching the ball, the smaller boy tripped and rolled and skinned his pale knee. To avoid being seen with a tapestry of tears drenching his shirt he put his face to his knee and faced the other way. The blankets of the bed stirred as the mass beneath them turned over with an upset grunt. “You okay, bud?” Eddie said with pursed lips forming a grin that clearly showed his inability to keep a straight face. The small boy looked up at Eddie, wiping his eyes furiously pretending he had something stuck in them. “Yeah, fine, Ed.” At this precise moment, the younger boy locked on to Edward’s obvious smile and began to grin himself. “It’s not funny, Eddie!” Ed burst out laughing which seemed to be contagious because the other boy, in turn, laughed hysterically at his now bloody knee. “Come on, we’ll go inside and patch you up.”
Eddie lifted himself up roughly, breathing heavy and sputtering through the tears now dripping down his face. Ashamed, slightly, Edward got up and took a trip to the bathroom to splash some water on his face and to think his dream over. It had been the last time he really truly talked to his one real companion and the dream was recurring. He didn’t understand it, the only thing he could think of was that it was due to him missing the boy. “I hate this.” He uttered and walked back to his bed to try to sleep for the rest of the night.
The next morning he woke up after the, at most, 1 hour of sleep he gained during his awful night. He was still tired and he had a splitting headache along with a knot in his neck that throbbed in pain. He walked downstairs and was greeted with a hearty breakfast by none other than good ole mum. He sat down and nearly whispered, “What’s the occasion?” His mother looked up from her book and slid her reading glasses off whilst her husband tore his eyes away from the moving pictures of the paper.
“Nothing, do I need an excuse to feed my two boys a good meal once in a while?”
“Yes”
“Well then Mr. Cranky, I was going to inform you we’ve decided to get a pet. How’s a beagle sound to you?”
“Bloody swell, mum”
“Hey, don’t you dare take that tone of voice with your mother!”
“Oh, I’m sorry that I didn’t want you to try and replace something that I’ve lost, parents. If you’ll excuse me I’m going to my room to think about what I’ve done. Forget about the dog, I won’t take care of it.” And with that Edward decided it was best to hurry up the stairs, close his door behind him and lock it securely. Secretly, solemnly, and ashamedly, he buried his face into his pillow and screamed for the good times of his life to come back.
