Ella Whittleby
OOC
Name: Kylie. I used to do a lot of roleplaying a while ago on a variety of different usernames (lemonbrain for a long time, ha), but I'm not entirely sure if any of you would have heard of me at all.
Contacts: kyliebarton333@yahoo.com, or ezmail.
Age: 17 baby!
Code: Hermione Granger.
IC
Name: Eleanor Whittleby.
Nickname(s): Well, quite frankly, Ella. Her dear friends may call her Ellie as well.
DOB: November 24, 199
Year: Why, sixth!
Blood: Halfblood.
House Preference: Gryffindor.
Why: This two house does not stand out because, you know, it is oh-so glamorized in the books. No, Ella is a rather stubborn and strong-hearted girl who often speaks out of turn and, if she feels something is right, will do anything to protect that cause.
Physical Appearance:
Ella Whittleby is not, to say, the most drop-dead gorgeous sort of girl. While she has certain lovely qualities that some may find to be attractive, she herself has come to the realizaton that she simply is not going to be the one to stand out, at least for a fair majority of the time.
With a shattering weight of 104 pounds at age sixteen, Ella is most certainly not considered to be eating too much in the least. In fact, it's been quite the opposite for her; indeed, she does not starve herself (for she has always looked down upon those pitiful girls who care far too much about others' opinions), but rather just finds it somewhat tedious to eat so much so frequently. Not to say that she can resist those pumpkin pasties, however!
Ella stands at a fairly average height of five feet and four inches, give or take a possible inch. She's never really viewed herself as 'short,' per sé, but she has confessed that it would be awfully nice to be able to get to the top shelf in the library without having to stand on her tip-toes even while already standing on a practically ancient stool. However, her height does not limit her from too many things, as there are a few other girls in her year of the same general size as she. Frankly, Ella doesn't pay much attention to it.
Ever since she was a small girl, Ella has been told "oh, just how lovely!" her defined cheekbones were. Adding accentuation to her pale face, they truly do make her smile radiate, it seems. Many a witch have told the girl that her lips were also quite 'beautiful' (though Ella had always seen that as such a horribly cliché word), and insisted that she wear some form of lipstick or gloss to make them stand out. She, being stubborn as she is, refused against all odds.
Ella has always been involved with sports. Being raised in a muggle surrounding for much of her life, football had become a large portion of all that she lived for. She ran two to six miles a day, and soon gained a rather muscular build. Not to say that Ella does not have girlish features, for that is not the truth at all, but her calves are clearly used to many mornings' runs and exercises. Football, however, has been the only sport that Ella (until Hogwarts, that is) has ever truly been interested in as a past-time.
Being, as was mentioned before, quite pale, Ella Whittleby almost is mistaken as a ghost in the dark corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. Of course, that is quite an exaggeration, but Ella's skintone is quite light, and many adults and students alike have jokingly referred to her as a Snow White kind of girl; simply because of her fair skin. Accenting this blanche flesh is a head of very intolerable chestnut hair, which falls to her shoulder blades in a curled fashion. She rarely ever brushes it, and instead finds herself annoyed with her chocolate-tinted locks, but secretly has a liking for them deep down.
Ella is not one of those girls with that set of eyes that can just set a man's heart afire. No, not quite. They don't reflect the sea's empathy on a stormy day, or anything at all like that. No... they're blue. Simple as that. And, especially in today's society, Ella always saw blue as being terribly overrated as a color itself. Oh, it was so frustrating at times! Of course, she could have worn contacts... but that was just too much extra work on her part.
While Hogwarts has a limit on clothing during classtime, Ella enjoys exercising her fashion abilities when it is allowed. Whenever there is a trip to Hogsmeade, she always dresses in her favorite styles of clothes. Generally, her style is quite unique, although most certainly not unheard of. If one were to catch Ella Whittleby at a glance, they might notice her wearing something like that of the following: a knee-length skirt, most likely with some design on the seam that she may or may not have sewn upon it, with leggings beneath (of course, to keep her legs warm). She almost never goes anywhere without a large sweater to warm her heart and a pair of flat shoes. Lately, she has also developed a liking for buttoned jackets, although she hasn't yet bought one.
Overall, Ella has a very bland, yet unique appearance compared to others. It may not make much sense, even.
Personality:
Upon meeting Ella, it might not be obvious that she had any problems at all. Why, she could appear to be the happiest witch to ever walk the earth! Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Although Ella strives to put on a mask for others, it is often uncovered by mood swings and sudden insecurities that make their way into the open during common conversation. Quite a bad thing, yes, but the girl has not yet found a solution for any of her feelings, and finds herself to be quite hypocritical in many situations. It disgusts her, to say the least, that she may at one moment be completely head-over-heels in love with the world and all of its beauty, and the next moment be so baffled and disappointed in society that it seems almost better that she not be there at all.
She's rather a complicated girl, which may not be noticed upon first meeting. Ella enjoys the simple things in life: walks through the park, laughing until her stomach hurts, awakening to the sounds of birds singing in the mornings... And yet, she finds herself wearied with these same things as well. Her mind changes so frequently with all of her thoughts and viewpoints, and lately it's just been very difficult for her to believe anything at all. However, there is one thing that she has learned to trust in herself: that life is the most precious thing given. That every moment or experience - good or bad - should be absolutely cherished and nurtured at all times, and that whether or not she feels lost, heartbroken, or completely wonderful, all events have led to her becoming the person she is today, a person that Ella truly prides herself upon for the majority of the time. She has been striving, as many people her age do, to find out exactly who she is, and to figure out how to be herself; and, most of the time, she's found it.
Basically, Ella is a pretty unpredictable, and at the same time, predictable person. She is dreadfully complicated, yet incredibly simple at the same time. Things that make her cry also make her giggle, and events that seem to be not a problem at all for Ella at one point may later, even under similar circumstances, have a completely different reaction on her part. She is just so terribly confused as to what is right and wrong, and after having thought so deeply to figure out so many things and fix everyone's problems in the past, Ella has, in a way, lost herself.
If there's anything that truly drives Ella absolutely nuts, it's those people that are so terribly stuck on themselves, such vague narcissists that they cannot even fathom the idea of caring for others. Friendships, similar to her aspects on life and experiences, are viewed as one of the most important parts of life, in Ella's opinion, and if one is so careless as to place their own being above something that beautiful and amazing, then they honestly are not worth her time at all.
At times, Ella can be very reserved. Most of the time, however, she feels the need to be around others, whether that's to mask her true feelings for people and society, or something else. She finds true happiness in laughter, and believes it to be almost a temporary vacation from any form of pain; whether it be physical or emotional. She enjoys to read very much, and at times prefers to be by herself, but often gets scared by her own thoughts... so she prefers to keep her mind up and busy with others' as to not to deal with her own.
Ella also often says things out of turn, things she doesn't mean in the long run. She does things to get revenge if she feels threatened, which is most certainly not healthy. When pressed with questions, she feels the need to act suave and unbothered, when she may get to a point where she will burst out screaming at the person out of sheer annoyance and the idea of her privacy being threatened.
Many people have abandoned Ella's trust, which certainly does not do much for those wanting to become closer friends with her. She is doubtful of lasting relationships, friendwise or more, and at the first sign of trouble, pushes away those who may have been able to help her with her problems. While she is very sensitive, Ella pretends to be tough and shoves others away and pretends not to need them anymore - even when that means that she must be torn apart inside.
Ella has always been good at two main subjects: potions and defense against the dark arts. Granted, she loved other classes - why, her favorite class ever taken was herbology! - but she never succeeded in them in the same way that she did with both of those, potions in the lead. The idea of making things better - which both of those subjects project to the future - excites and inspires her. As was mentioned before, herbology was one of her favorite classes, but she was absolutely horrid at the subject, although she kept trying and trying to achieve. It just didn't work out.
This girl really dislikes drama in any form. It disgusts her to see people argue over such ridiculous things, and hypocrites annoy her; even though, as she has become terribly aware, she has lately become a bit of a hypocrite herself. Ella will seclude herself from others, though, if it means avoiding an argument - whereas, in another situation, she might be the first to get it out in the open. She just cannot stand tension or awkwardness and feels the need to always get away from it, whether that means taking it face-to-face or running away.
Ella has little respect for her professors. She enjoys their company, but over the course of her youth has lost the same interest and admiration she used to have for the teachers as she began to be able to think just as deeply and figure out things just as simply as they could. Well, there are still a select few professors that Ella still does truly admire, but most of them she feels are just there for her own amusement.
History:
As a child, Ella Whittleby was rather odd. Unbeknownst to her was her magical background, as her mother had been a witch and had not the heart to tell her dear husband. So she had grown up with the usual playthings you might expect to see in a house with a toddler: dolls, blocks, plush toys, and who could forget Legos? But this strange girl never got the same pleasure out of any of that as the rest of her peers. Rather than building houses with her blocks or Legos for her dolls, Ella would build strange contraptions that she had only thought of in her dreams. Odd vehicles and strange animals (of course, they did not exactly look like anything, as they were sculpted by a girl of merely three years of age). In fact, in her primary school, her teacher exclaimed that 'Ella was just simply not normal and therefore must be placed in a different class.'
Ha! Oh yes, that's correct. Her primary school teachers believed Ella to be quite simply off-her-hanger. Her mother, Marion, knew the cause of all of this and managed to talk to her husband, Darwin, about switching the girl's school placement in order to avoid the misunderstanding. So she was moved to a slightly larger school in Scotland, where she could go unnoticed by most professors. Of course, Ella never went completely unnoticed; she was always playing innocent little tricks and seeing just how much she could get away with, but her mother cautioned her not to build those contraptions with her blocks anymore, and that seemed to divert the teachers' attention of that.
Ella began to be able to tell that she indeed had magical ability on her best friend's eighth birthday. While staring at the pinata Liam was so eagerly trying to break (with no success), suddenly there was a large bang! and Ella was taken aback as a gigantic hole began to form in the side of the pinata and goodies immediately began to pour out onto the grass. Liam was exceptionally happy, and Ella often pretended she was a sorceress for a while until her father disapproved and told her that magic simply did not exist.
My, was he wrong!
On the dawn of her eleventh birthday, Ella received her letter of acceptance from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. It happened so strangely, too! Why, in the early hours of the morning Ella was awoken by a strange tapping on the window, and (since it was so awfully dark), she was cautious of what it could be. She had heard of little girls being kidnapped by mysterious old men coming to their windows, and was almost so frightened as to go fetch her father, but decided against it. Instead, she opened her drapes only a centimeter or two and screamed! Not because it was indeed an axed murderer, but simply an owl. Why, she started laughing and did not think to open the window until she realized that this owl had an envelope tied to his leg!
Finally, she opened it, and was almost completely taken aback by its message. She was so excited that she ran into her parents' bedroom so early in the morning, and exclaimed, "Mum! Dad! Look what I got! D'ya think it's Liam playing a joke?"
Upon revealing the letter's contents to her father, he just laughed, and Marion pretended to; until she gave him a talking-to later that day and managed to, somehow, persuade him that she had indeed gone to this barbaric school of witchcraft as well, when she was a girl. And, of course, that it was a rewarding experience, etcetera, etcetera.
Her first year at Hogwarts was just simply awkward, as are the first years in any sort of school. It was dreadfully difficult finding her way around, although she caught on eventually, and the moving stairs did confuse her greatly. She was terribly small then, and being noticed in classtime became a frustration. Then again, in later years she would most certainly have appreciated the privacy. Why, in her years after, it was as if she could never get away from the constant attention from her professors! And most of the time, it was not positive attention either.
Ella was able to befriend others fairly quickly, a trait that had been passed down to her from her mother (who, sadly, had been a straight-A student and was dearly remembered by those professors still teaching there), although that is most definitely not to say that her company was enjoyed by everyone. Yes, she had enemies, best friends, and well, just acquaintances too, just as any other somewhat average (or as close to average as a witch going through puberty can get) girl might have.
Ella was the kind of girl who, when encountered with conflict, simply got annoyed with it all and walked away. She did this several times in her third and fourth years, as frustration overtook her when her mother passed away one night in October. The sadness didn't even hit until December, when Ella finally decided to stop holding back her emotions and cried into the shoulder of one of her dearest friends.
Becoming somewhat popular among her year, Ella made her rounds among the gentlemen. Unsure of relationships and how to trust others, they never lasted very long. Not to say that she didn't want them... she was just very unsure of when it became too serious, and Ella didn't want her heart to be broken if she waited too long.
Lately, Ella has been very interested in the scientific aspects of life. She's gone several times a week during the summer before her sixth year to the local bookstore, where she would not buy the books, but read them to herself in the small shop. It was such a nice shop, too! It had a little spiral staircase winding up to a couple of sofas and even more books. It was just wonderful. But yes.
Ever since the death of her mother, Ella's father has been dazed and confused about everything. Having to help him stand back on his feet was hard enough, but the idea of ever dating again terrifies the man. He drinks regularly, as a result of depression, and often comes back during the late hours of the night. During the school year, Ella has to assure that her father will be alright by paying a nanny out of her own job's money to stay with him. She loves her father very dearly and cherishes vacations, as she gets to visit him only during those times.
Roleplay Sample:
Staring off at the grandfather clock across the room, legs pulled up to her chin in a girlish pose, Ella's eyes blinked and a tear trickled down her cheek. She wasn't sad, but her eyes were dreadfully wet due to her terrible allergies. You know, you'd think that by now they would have thought of a cure for allergies, with all of the magical medications! Oh, it was terrible. All day she'd been asked about "how she was doing," and "if she were alright." Annoying, actually.
Not that she'd been incredibly happy. Friends had been ignoring her like crazy, and classes had been a hassle, to put it simply. Ugh. She'd spent the day just like this. Thank Merlin that it was Saturday, for if it'd been a weekday she'd have been dead. Detention would have been her only option. But on a day like today? Sure, she could have been down in Hogsmeade, but honestly... who did that?
Ha, everyone did.
But that was alright. She didn't need friends on a day like today. All that Ella needed was the thoughts on her mind and the lovely scenery that Hogwarts offered to her so graciously. Swiping a lock of dulled brown hair, Ella tucked it with frustration behind her left ear and stood up. She'd been sitting for far too long. It was time to do something with her day.
(I'm sorry. I'm totally braindead.)
