Emily Grey, Death Eater
OOC
Name: Erica Nightshade
Contacts: ezmail is best, but my e-mail is TryToDreamAgain@aol.com
Age: 17
Code: Hermione Granger
IC:
Name: Emily Evangeline Grey
Nickname(s): Emmy, Emma
DOB: April 11th, 1991 (I always get the year screwed up... it's either 91 or 92, I'm not sure which)
Blood: Muggle-born
Previous School/House: Hogwarts, Slytherin
Occupation: A simple, low-level secretary at the Ministry of Magic.
Physical Appearance: Emily stands at a height of 5’5” when she’s wearing her slippers, low shoes, or hanging around in her apartment barefoot. She believes that she is still growing, but since both of her parents never made it past 5’4” she isn’t going to get her hopes up about being too tall. Emma is a vegetarian, and because of this she rarely eats a whole lot of food at meal times. This has caused her to maintain her consistent weight of 110 lbs, with only her stretches and gymnastics as exercise. She has well defined muscles in her legs from gymnastics, and her arms have slight definition to them as well, though she is far from a body-builder. She has a naturally tan complexion, with or without much sunlight.
Emily’s eyes are that particular shade of icy silver-blue that you can never quite tell if it is more blue or silver. Either way, it is an eye-catching color that compliments her slightly tanned skin perfectly. These eyes can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on the look they hold. Emily can make the silver-blue color a frighteningly cold one, or she can infuse warmth into her look, all in a split-second. It is true that the eyes can tell you what the person is thinking, at least for Emily. She never hides anything she feels; her eyes give it all away. Her eyelashes are long, and so she doesn’t need to use mascara or anything like that. She does enjoy to wear eye shadow, however, and will often wear darker shades of blues and black to contrast her light, baby blue eye color. The color of her eyes can sometimes be compared to that of a Husky dog, whose eye color is most often an icy blue.
Emily’s hair is a dirty blond mixture of color. Evenly highlighted, there is a majority of dark blond color with quite a few light to dark brown highlights interspersed throughout. Her mother had dirty blond hair, as did her father and sister, and so it wasn’t any shock when she had this tone of hair as well. She loves the way that the layers blend in with each other to add texture, even without styling, though she often curls her hair in the mornings or braids it at night, while it is wet, so when she wakes up and unbraids it her hair is crimped. Emily is a huge fan of scrunchies and hair clips, so when she needs her hair pulled back to practice gymnastics or write a report she’ll use those. The length of her hair is a good four to five inches past her shoulder and she plans on letting it grow out until it reaches the middle of her back. Up until this year she has usually kept it cut to just below her shoulders.
When she is not in her robes for work Emily loves to be dressed in whatever is most comfortable for the season. In the winter she is always seen in a warm, fuzzy sweater to keep warm. She’ll wear these sweaters of hers until about May, when it begins to get far too warm, but she loves her sweaters the most. She has a wide variety of them in an assortment of colors, each as comfortable looking as the next. When the weather is warmer out she’ll stick with a simple t-shirt or tank top, depending on how hot it actually is. A simple pair of jeans would normally suffice for her, but she is also seen wandering around the common room in a pair of sweatpants. An accessory junkie, her outfits will often times be adorned with pins, buttons, patches, or other such oddities. She’s rarely seen without a pair of earrings in, rings on her fingers, bracelets, and necklaces on as well. She isn’t self-conscious or trying to ‘look good’, she just likes to have fun with her clothing and jewelry.
Personality: Emily is never satisfied with what she’s done with her life. She understands that no matter how much she studies there is always more to learn, and no matter how hard she pushes herself she knows that she could always be better; despite understanding this, she still isn’t happy with who she is. While this helps her to be the best person she could possibly be, it also causes her to put an awful lot of pressure on herself as a thirteen-year-old girl, and creates far too much unnecessary stress in her life. This is partially because of her older sister, Hannah, who had been as close to perfect as humanly possible. She had perfect grades at school, she played every sport imaginable, she was beautiful… she was everything but a witch. Yes, Emily is the only magical person in her family. Though her parents had never really expected perfection from Emily, she expected it from herself. She wasn’t allowed to play sports, due to a medical condition, which left her ample time to perfect her grades.
Determination and ambition come hand in hand for Emily, who has never given up a fight. Yes, she has lost her fair share of fights, both verbal and physical, but she has never actually given up during any of them. She doesn’t believe in leaving a task half-finished, or doing anything half-way. Because she left everything she knew, the entire muggle world, in order to becoming a witch, there is a lot of pressure put on her to succeed. There is no way that she can go back to the muggle world now, and so this is all she has left. She abandoned her family to achieve what she was after, and had decided long ago that she was going to make her sacrifice worth it.
It is important to Emily that everyone understands that she is not cutthroat ambitious. She is really caring deep down, she would never do anything to intentionally harm someone who didn’t deserve it, and she has very strong moral values. She may be sly and sneaky, but she’ll never resort to cheating. She wants to deserve everything that she earns, and would hate to think that the only reason she was good at anything was because she lied or cheated. She’ll be honest with pretty much anyone about pretty much anything, and only expects in return that people are equally honest with her. She values honesty and trust above all else in a person.
Being the only magical person in her family was difficult for Emily. Her family is very religious, and so when she was discovered to have magical powers they automatically denounced them as some type of defect. She had to fight very hard with her own family for them to allow her to go to Hogwarts. It caused her to have low self-esteem for several years, but she has recently come to accept who she is, even if her family does not. It is because of her trying childhood that she is open to making friends with people with all sorts of backgrounds. It has made her a little more understanding about the trials and hardships of others.
In some aspects of Emily’s personality, she is always changing. She refuses to mention the fact that she is muggle-born, as she is very proud of being a witch and would hate for anybody to think less of her because of her bloodline. She admires all of the witches and wizards with a sort of idol-worship. She has always held a great amount of respect for her elders and watches everything they do and say like a hawk so that when she gets older she can be just like them. Emily assumed that since they’re older they know more than her, which in most cases is true, and so she expects that she can learn things from the older students by following their examples, which isn’t always true depending on who she follows. All Emily really wants is to be accepted by everyone, younger and older alike, and make tons of allies in the magical world.
One of Emily’s greatest passions is her love of animals. At home she has at least a dozen pets, her favorite being a stray that she had taken in about a month or two before school had started up for her third year. It is because of this love for all living creatures that Emily became a vegetarian at the age of ten. Since then she has never eaten another piece of meat. She feels very strongly about not eating meat but he never forces her beliefs upon other people. As much as she would like for everyone to agree with her views she knows that everyone is different and that sometimes her views can be a little out there.
She was never reckless, though she did have fun, and this caused her to branch out and try new things that she could do safely. It also, over the past two years, fueled her to test her boundaries with the help of magical healing charms. She was always adventurous by nature, though she never did anything stupid in fear of injuring herself.
With her height, weight, build, and energy, Emily discovered the perfect activity for her; gymnastics. Though she bruised easily and often, her parents approved of the activity. She was always active and very flexible, and this put her talents to good use. It was at this time that she began to develop that competitive nature, as well as her drive and ambition that made her who she is today. This also caused her to develop a natural grace and poise in her everyday life.
She is also very daring, and when she feels that there is something she might be able to do she won’t hesitate to try it. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on the situation. She tried ice skating and knocked herself out from falling on the ice, yet she has been ice skating every since. She is able to think about the risks of her actions before she does something, even if she ends up ignoring those risks anyway.
Her parents, when she received her letter of acceptance from Hogwarts, caused her to be very defensive about her views. She had never defended anything she believed in so fiercely, and even caused her to run away from home for an entire day to prove her point. It was this event that helped turn Emily’s determined nature into pure stubbornness in the face of opposition, a tactic she uses often in life. It has gotten her where she is today.
History: Emily was born to Elizabeth and Daniel Wilco on April 11th. Both of her parents were Muggles, and Emily as raised like any other muggle child. She had one older sister, Hannah, who was five years older than her and never missed an opportunity to rub that fact in Emma’s face. Despite this, she had her sister had usually gotten alone well growing up. Hanna would play with her, feed her, and watch her when their parents were busy. They got along very well for being sisters, and even more so considering the age gap.
When Hannah went to school, Emily got very jealous. She wanted to be just like her older sister and didn’t see why she couldn’t go to school as well! Instead, she was forced to stay home and play with her dolls and toys all day until her sister would come home from school. Emily’s mother didn’t work, and so she remained home with the kids all day, causing her and Emily to become very close. Emily had a loving relationship full of hugs and playtime with her mother and father, and grew up in a very stimulated environment.
While Hannah went to school, she’d sometimes leave her school books at home in the room she shared with Emily or on the kitchen table and Emily would take these books and begin to read them. While she didn’t understand everything she read, she liked to think that she did and would spend hours at a time absorbing this information that never quite made sense in her mind. She always wanted to know more than she should, whether for better or for worse was yet to be determined.
It was at this time that Emily discovered her skill as a different sort of athlete- a gymnast. This was a safe hobby for her as a small child, just something to do in her spare time. What began as an innocent hobby, however, soon turned into a full-fledged obsession. She was a natural, she had balance and flexibility, and she loved everything from the floor routines to the balance beam to even the parallel bars. Emily loved the sport and began competing at the age of nine. She won many awards and seemed to have found her niche.
Her father loved to hunt, and he usually prepared the meat in a shed out back of their house. That area was supposed to be off limits, but one day Emily was home alone with her father, scraped herself, and panicked. She couldn’t reach the bandages on the top shelf, the heavy-duty hospital-like ones, and so she went to find her father. He was in the shed so she went in, only to see a dead deer on the table. Screaming, she ran back into the house only able to think that that deer may have been a mother, or had a family, and now it was dead. She thought of Bambi, the movie she loved so much. Bambi, dead, and soon to be deer meat on her plate for dinner. That night she refused to eat the meat that her mother prepared. The next night she wouldn’t eat the chicken, nor would she eat bacon at breakfast. Her parents thought that the phase would pass but it never did, and ever since that day she has been a vegetarian.
Emily was a ten-year-old girl who did well in school, did well with her gymnastics, and was fairly popular. She had a caring family and everything seemed to be fine… until her eleventh birthday. One letter arrived during the day, by an owl. This was very odd, but since she loved animals so much Emily didn’t even flinch when she opened the window to let the owl in. Her mother freaked out while Emily allowed the owl to drop a letter by her feet before flying off again. Confused and curious, Emily and her mother opened the letter. It was her acceptance letter to Hogwarts. Hogwarts? Wizards? Magic? Platform 9 ¾? Her mother thought it was a hoax, but somehow Emily knew it was real. She had noticed odd things going on, levitating objects, random little things, that until now she had ignored. Could they have been signs? She begged and pleaded with her parents to let her go but they still held strong to the idea that it wasn’t real. They were a religious family and just the idea of witchcraft made them shudder. But, to humor Emily so she would drop the subject, they promised to visit ‘diagon alley’.
Once they got there and saw all of the wonders that the magical world had to offer, Emily had a wish list a mile long while her parents were at a loss. Their daughter, a witch? No, it couldn’t be. And so they forbade her from going to Hogwarts. It was only April, Emily had two more months of muggle school left, and so she made a rash decision; she stopped going to school. Emily began skipping classes, thinking that maybe, just maybe, if she failed muggle school then her parents would let her go to Hogwarts. Instead, her parents grounded her and personally drove her to school every day.
Emily knew what she wanted, and she wanted to go to Hogwarts. She had a goal and refused to stop until that goal was reached. In her determination she did the only thing that she could do as an eleven-year-old girl; she started a fight. Well, fights, plural, to be more specific. First she hit one of her peers, then she swore at her teacher, and finally she threw a paperweight at her headmistress, but missed and only shattered a window. She was, to her immense joy, expelled.
It was then that her parents realized how strongly Emily really felt about going to Hogwarts. She wanted to teach Care of Magical Creatures, a class she read about inside of that Diagon Alley book shop, even though she knew nothing about magical creatures as of yet, she simply loved creatures in general. Before she had wanted to be a zoologist, so this was the next closest thing, right? She also wasn’t allowed back at her old school, and a transfer would cost her parents too much money… not to mention the fact that she’d just manage to get herself expelled again and again and again. Thus, she was allowed to attend Hogwarts.
Buying an owl was Emily’s favorite part of her shopping for Hogwarts. Throughout all of this Hannah had become more and more jealous of her little sister. Hannah tried not to show it, but as talented as she was, she wanted to be magical too! It was only when they realized that their parents frowned upon Emily’s powers that Hannah was okay with everything. Hannah always secretly wished for powers, but was also very glad that her parents favored her for being normal on top of everything else.
Emily went shopping for her Hogwarts supplies soon after muggle school let out for the summer, and she didn’t feel out of place even thought she knew that she looked out of place. She loved everything, wanted everything, and knew that his was what she was meant to do. She met several other students in Diagon Alley that day, already making friends.
When she was sorted on her first day Emily didn’t know what all to expect. Sure she had read several books and knew of the houses, and she’d seen pictures of the castle and knew what it looked like, but there was nothing like experiencing everything first-hand. The shock came when she, a mere muggle-born student, was sorted into Slytherin. Was she evil, deep down, like all the rumors said about Slytherins? Emily didn’t think so, and because she was cunning, sneaky, and sly she decided that everything made sense. She quickly befriended like-minded people, people who wanted to be the best just like her. Sometimes competition could turn into wonderful relationships.
Through her second year she studied harder than anybody else in order to make things as easy for herself as possible. Being a muggle born she knew that she was at a slight disadvantage, but wanted to make sure that nobody else saw it that way. She studied up not only on the subjects she was learning in classes but also on the electives that she would be taking during the next year. Emily was eager to get ahead and would stop at nothing to be at the top of her class, even if it meant outdoing those know-it-all Ravenclaws. She was very determined to do her best, and she knew that as long as others were outdoing here that she could do better.
Pushing herself this hard as a child was very strenuous, but by the age of thirteen when she was in her third year she knew that she had to succeed at being a witch. She knew that she needed to get a magical job now that she’d quit muggle school, and hadn’t realized how hard starting the whole learning thing over from scratch would be. It was like her first year at muggle school all over again! She hadn’t known back then what she was getting herself into, but now it was too late, and so she forced herself to not give up, no matter how hard the subjects were.
She took up ice-skating during the winter of her third year with the help of a Slytherin friend who knew how to skate. With the help of the school nurse, as she was always falling and hurting herself, she soon grew very good at the activity and was confident in her ability. She thought that with the help of magic she was virtually indestructible, which wasn’t true at all but that was the illusion that she allowed herself to have.
Her fourth year went by about the same way with little disturbances. She was doing well in all of her classes, and already looking forward to the challenge of her O.W.L. year, which was coming up. She had a select group of friends that she spent most of her time hanging out with, and while she had friends from Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, and even a Hufflepuff or two, she usually surrounded herself with other Slytherins because she tended to get along with them the best. Though her family had written her consistently over the past three years to keep up with her progress and see how things were doing, they slowly began to stop writing her letters. During her third year the only time she spoke with them was when she needed them to send her money for school supplies, or over Christmas break.
Her fifth year was her hardest year yet and she had to work twice as hard to keep from falling behind in her higher-level classes. Professors were pushing for them to absorb everything quickly so that they could be as prepared as possible for the O.W.L.s. Things like schoolwork didn’t come naturally to Emily, who was more of a hands-on type of person, and so when she was reading things and memorizing dates and such she had to work about twice as hard as the normal student to do just as well. Though this got very tiring for her, she never even thought about just not trying and scraping by with mediocre marks. She was nervous when it came time to take the tests, but when she received her scores by owl over the summer she was ecstatic! She had passed all of them with flying colors, and knew that she would be able to face anything after those.
Of course, she didn’t realize how much more difficult it would be to continue on with so many N.E.W.T. level classes in her sixth year. She was sixteen years old now, which was a very nice year to be. She tried to have a little more fun with her life, and still managed to get great marks on all of her schoolwork. She soon came to realize that after five years of working hard on memorizing facts and writing essays, those things were no longer very difficult for her, and she didn’t’ have to work quite as hard as she had during her first few years of schooling. She had a few boyfriends, but none of them really amounted to anything, they were all simply crushes. This made her sixth year far more enjoyable than any of her other years.
As her regular school work became mundane, Emily branched out into different areas to learn about. One of her friends was sort of a Dark Arts buff, and so she borrowed books on History and spells, just for something to learn outside of her usual schoolwork. Though she never imagined that she would ever use it, it was an interesting subject to learn about and she was compelled to know more with every tidbit of information she got. She hid these books from anyone else, fearing that some may get the wrong idea from her sudden interest in these forbidden areas of magic.
Throughout all of her Hogwarts schooling, she had been practicing her gymnastics (and more recently her figure skating) all throughout the year. She never slacked up on her training or her physique, making sure that she was always flexible and in shape. She wouldn’t call it showing off, but if someone asked to see some moves then she wouldn’t hesitate to show them. She enjoyed the satisfaction she felt when others admired her efforts and thought she had talent. Her parents had never really treated her like she was special, they saved that for Hannah, and so it was a good feeling for her. She was still a vegetarian, though more and more people thought that she was insane and missing out for not eating meat.
During her seventh year Emily was in for the shock of her life. She had planned on graduating and then working back home, or somewhere in the magical world, in order to save up money to train as a Care of Magical Creatures Professor, or some job involving animals. Instead, on her eighteenth birthday, she received a letter from her parents telling her that she would not be allowed back home now that she was legally of age. She could do whatever she wanted, but they didn’t want any part of her magical blasphemous ways. Emily was shocked that her parents would just abandon her like that! Now faced with the fact that once she graduated she wouldn’t have a place to stay, Emily panicked. She was smart, yes, and she had the marks to continue her education, but she didn’t have any money. She didn’t have anywhere to stay. She had nowhere to go!
With these harsh realities facing her immediately upon her graduation, she did the only thing she could do; she asked for help. A Slytherin friend of hers offered to allow Emily to stay with her until she could get on her feet. Through hard work and determination she soon got a job as a simple secretary at the Ministry of Magic, and she used an advance in her pay to rent out a very tiny apartment, but her friend had one last bit of help to give her before she moved out. This was the friend that knew of her interest in the Dark Arts… the same friend who had relatives who were Death Eaters. Promised with power and armed with the idea that they could teach her anything she ever wanted to know and then some, Emily considered the option. Yes, she was a muggle born, but this was so much more than that. This was a future, this was power, this was being her personal best… this was what she had to do in order to make ends meet in her life.
Through her friend, Emily came in contact with several Death Eaters who seemed skeptical about her joining. She was only 18, after all, and not even a whole year out of school. She had no real experience in anything they were doing, and nobody knew anything about her. Emily insisted that everybody needed a place to start, and how would she ever be able to rise to greatness if didn’t get a chance. When asked about her bloodline, she simply said that her parents were dead and that she didn’t know anything about them. This was a complete lie, of course, but nobody there knew that and so she continued with it, claiming to have been raised by adoptive parents. Her parents had disowned her, and she no longer wanted anything to do with them. She even changed her last name, and began going by Emily Grey instead of Wilco. When asked to prove that she was cut out for this sort of thing, because it was very demanding and very dangerous, Emily did the first thing she thought of, and turned to a nearby spider. ‘Crucio’ was all she said, and the calmness and simplicity that she put into the action showed the Death Eaters that she could be calm and collected in any situation, acting under impulse. While she had no intentions of killing anybody, which was something that she feared her association with the Death Eaters would come to, she knew that she needed a group to be part of. Emily needed to be surrounded by people, she needed to know that she had friends, and allies, and that she wasn’t alone. Before she joined the Death Eaters she had none of that, and now she did. She felt secure with her decision, even if it was a risky one.
And so here she is, an eighteen year old girl, faced with the realities of life far too early. She has pledged her allegiance to the Death Eaters in hopes of gaining some sort of upper edge in life. Her determination and ambition to know everything played a huge part in her decisions, but she knows that it’s too late to turn back now. She made a rash decision about attending Hogwarts, and that worked out alright for her, so hopefully the same would happen for her rash decision about the Death Eaters. Though they don’t tell her everything, she soon hopes to work her way into the favor of the leaders of the group and get into the sacred inside circle.
RP Sample: Emily paced the small area between her bureau and her bed, glancing around at her surroundings in order to reassure herself that she had made the right decision. She had no money, and the two advances in her pay from the Ministry had already gone into keeping her landlord off of her case. It must’ve been very hard to trust someone who had just graduated, as everybody seemed to be questioning her competence lately. She didn’t want to be stuck here forever, as the plumbing didn’t work very well and there were rats in the walls that sometimes came out and ate the cheese she left for them. She didn’t mind animals at all, even the rats, but just the fact that they were there left her a little unnerved.
Her parents had abandoned her, and she knew that there was nothing more she could do about it. She hadn’t even gone back home to collect her things after she had graduated from Hogwarts; instead, she’d chosen to spend her summer at a friend’s house before she found this horrible secretary job. All she did was run around for the important people, and she barely spoke a word to anybody all day.
Her job sucked. Her apartment sucked. Her family sucked. Her life pretty much sucked. The only thing that didn’t suck was the fact that she now had the mark of the Death Eaters branded into her arm. This was a sign that she belonged somewhere, even when her own family had abandoned her. These were people who wanted to achieve something, they were all ambitious, and they were all like her. Just like with the Slytherins, Emily always surrounded herself with likeminded people, and this was no exception. She felt as though she truly belonged, even if they didn’t think that she could handle it. She would prove them wrong!
The hardest part for Emily was justifying her actions. In her mind she had no choice; it was either starve and live on the streets or make some powerful allies who may have good connections for her later on in life. The choice had been easy, it would be the consequences of that choice that she would be forced to live with for the rest of her life. Could she really torture other human beings? She couldn’t even eat an animal! What they would think of her if they ever discovered… and as her mind turned to wondering what would happen when that inevitable day came when they would force her to do something she may regret she was distracted.
The mark began to burn on her arm and she knew that it was time. Her first ever meeting with the group as a whole since she had been allowed to join among their ranks. Would they accept her for who she was, or would they force her to do all sorts of ridiculous things to prove herself? She knew that she was just as good as any one of them, if not better, and mentally dared them to question her worth. She was ready. Finally.
