Part 17

After dropping Elizabeth off at her home Jason decided to pay his mother a visit. He still had time before he had to head to the hospital and he wanted his mother to know that Sonny was going to be okay. The cemetery was quiet and that was how he liked it. The gate was open but he paid it no mind.

Nearing his mother’s grave he paused in mid-step. A man no taller than himself was sitting near her grave. Jason couldn’t see his face but he heard tears in the man’s voice as he spoke to his mother.

“ I finally found the both of you and I’m sorry that I didn’t save you in time but I give your word that I won’t let anything happen to our son. You don’t know how grateful I am that you gave me something to remember you and our love by. I just hope that Jason will accept me as his father.”

His Father. The words turned over in his head like a dryer in constant motion. There was no way this man could be his father. My father. Jason must have said the words out loud because the man turned as if startled and stood to face him. Neither man spoke for fear that they would say the wrong thing.

Jason watched the man as his hands trembled as if he wanted to touch something but was too afraid to. Jason looked the man square in the eye and froze at the eyes staring back at him with a look of recognition in them. Recognition of what he didn’t know. This mans eyes were eyes Jason had seen before. He saw them everyday he looked in the mirror. Justin began to speak but Jason turned intending to bolt the moment he opened his mouth.

“Jason wait.” Justin called out and raced after him. He grabbed Jason’s arm stopping him in his tracks. “Please. Just hear me out. Please.” Jason exhaled heavily but didn’t attempt to move when Justin released his arm. He waited.

After stopping Jason, Justin had no idea what to say next.

Jason watched him closely. “You’ve had twenty years to think about it and you still don’t know what to say?”

Justin sighed and ran his hands through his hair.

“Jason I’m”

“Don’t!” Jason interrupted lifting his hand. “Don’t tell me you’re sorry. Just… Don’t.”

“You don’t understand Jason.” Justin cried desperately to say something. “I-I tried to find you and your mother so many times. I really tried.”

“Obviously you didn’t try hard enough.”

Justin stopped his protest by grinding his teeth together. He was trying his best not to yell at him. He wanted to shake him and demand that he listen to what he had to say. But at the same time he wanted to pull his son into his arms and apologize, to promise to never let anything happen to him ever again. Justin didn’t think that Jason would appreciate the gesture so he stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“You know what, maybe I didn’t try hard enough but I’m here now and I’m trying. Doesn’t that count for anything at all?”

“I think you’re a little to late.” Jason whispered in a small voice as he settled next to his mother’s grave hoping to gain some strength from her.

“Do you really believe that?” Justin asked as he watched him trace his mother’s name with such gentleness.

Jason didn’t speak. He remembered asking his mother about his father and how she avoided the subject and every chance she got. When he was younger, he thought about all the things he would ask his real father when he found him.
Why had he left? What made him come back? Why now? He pictured many ways in which his father would find him. But standing near his moms’ grave wasn’t one of them.

“Why…” Jason began but paused afraid to ask the question and even more afraid to hear the answer. “Why did you leave my mom?”

Justin expected this question but it still surprised him. “Your mother was with Deke at the time. And me, well I was the other guy.”

“You two had an affair.” Jason stated.

Justin blinked at his bluntness. “Susan didn’t tell me that you were my son and I had no idea until I hired a private investigator to find her. I went to her but Deke was there and your mother refused to go with me. After that you guys had already moved away and the investigator was killed. I had no way of finding you.” Justin took a small step towards Jason but sighed when he stood and backed away from him.

“Why did she refuse?”

“Deke.” Justin said clenching his hands as he said the name.

Jason waited for him to continue. “What about him?” Jason questioned when he didn’t.

“She declared her loved for him. She told me that she wouldn’t leave him. Deke seemed like the jealous type and I though she was afraid of him. I tried to get her to change her mind but to no avail. Susan slammed the door in my face and that was the last time I saw her.”

“You didn’t fight for her?”

“She threatened to call the cops so I left. When I went back no one was there. It was like she vanished.”

Jason was quiet for a moment. He was probably too young to remember the move but he remembered how afraid his mother was when Deke yelled and… He paused when a thought entered his mind. “You knew!”

“Knew what?” Justin asked curious as to where Jason’s newfound anger was coming from.

“You knew that mom was afraid of Deke. You knew and you still left her with him. You left us with him.”

“Jason I never knew that Susan was afraid of Deke.”

“No! But you suspected it.” Jason shouted.

“Jason if I had known that Susan was afraid of Deke I wouldn’t have put her, you or your brother in the position to stay there.”

Jason shook his head and took a few steps back. “I don’t believe you. You could have done something, anything. My mother would still be alive if only you had done something. Everything would be different. It would have been so different.” Jason began to turn away.

“Son wait…” Justin stopped mid sentence when Jason turned with fire in his eyes.

“Don’t ever call me your son. Ever. You weren’t around when I needed you and I don’t need you now so just stay away from me.” Jason yelled turning and heading for the gate.

“Jason please wait.” Justin called out and ran after him. “You don’t mean that.”

“I do.” Jason cried grabbing his helmet and hopping on his bike. “Just stay the hell away from me.” His bike roared to life as a car pulled up next to them. Alan stepped out of the car just as Jason was driving off. Justin watched his son drive off and away from him.

“What happened?” Alan asked Justin, who was still watching the spot where Jason was last seen.

“He blames me. My son blames me for everything.” Justin said getting into the car. Alan watched him through the window as Justin leaned his head back and let his tears fall.

Flight 762

“Are you sure Archie’s okay Mommy?” Nolan questioned for the tenth time since they boarded the plane.

“He’ll be fine sweetie.” Jennifer said.

“But Archie doesn’t like cages, Mommy. He’s afraid.” Nolan cried as the pilot comes on and announces that they would be landing in a few minutes.

“Put your seatbelt on honey.” Jennifer said helping him with his seatbelt. “ And don’t worry, we’ll get Archie when we land.” She stated before he could.

“Are we going to surprise Daddy?” Nolan asked as the plane began to descend.

“Yes we are.” Jennifer said knowing that they would do more than surprise him. After Justin left the house it only took her two minutes to decide to follow him and ten minutes to pack before grabbing Nolan and Archie and heading to the nearest airport. She knew what it was like to have a father leave you and come back searching for forgiveness. She also knew that Jason wouldn’t accept Justin into his life so easily. Jennifer sighed and closed her eyes as the plane landed in Port Charles. They were here and there was no going back now.
