Favorite tails... er, tales.
Many dragons hoard. It's just a fact of life -- setting aside for the moment the fact that packrats and crows and bowerbirds and people also tend to squirrel things away -- and I, for one, have come to terms that I shall forever get a glint of avarice in my eye when ever I happen upon a trove of books and movies and music. At least I am selective!

*ahem* But this isn't about hoarding, really, unless it's more common among contemporary dragons to hoard books and media than gold. It's about favorite tales of dragons, be it a book or a shortstory in hard form or maybe even one that you have read on the web. There are a lot of tales out there, and I know how difficult is is to pick just one ... so if you can't do it, name the top contenders.

For myself, I think my favorite dragon-tale is a shortstory by Bill Fawcett titled, "Through the Dragon's Eyes." It was published in an anthology of dragon stories edited by Christopher Stasheff titled, aptly enough, Dragon's Eye. Last time I checked on Amazon, it was unavailable -- but if you ever come across a copy of it, grab it. Good stuff in there. (actually, I'm checking now, and it says it ships in one-two days. Huh! see here -- no picture of the cover, though)

I also remember being quite impressed with the Steel Dragon stories, a years ago when I'd first encountered the 'net and the AFD community and it accompanying literature archive. I've just hunted them down again, and need to re-read to see if the years change my perspective any. ;) Anyway, they can be found here -- and if you like them, drop Hasai a line to say so. I surely will.

Re: Favorite tails... er, tales.
heh

I too find that I am growing, by leaps and bounds, a minor library. In fact I get highly aggitated when anyone who I /know/ for a fact does not treat books with any sort of respect ( as I see it ) asks to borrow mine. I have nearly chewed on someone's face over the fact that she had left out one of my books for her very young sister to get her hands on.., and the back half od th ebook was managled. Badly.

;)

Music, books, stuffed animals ( only special ones, not so special ones get donated to needy charites or my niece ;) ), artwork, more books on artwork, DVD's of old and new movies that I enjoy muchly, Start Trek Episodes, books on Star trek and Star Wars, more books on history, science and relilgions ( beliefs / paths ). ^.^

*chuckles*

I hoard CDs, books, overpriced department store makeup (no lie! ^^;;) and DVDs with fervor... and of course, anything draconic I can get my grubby little paws on. ^^ My current /current/ obsession is amassing a collection of art instruction books and wildlife books. :D

Re: Favorite tails... er, tales.
Ooh, I tend to hoard just about anything.. usually the less useful stuff, too. >_< *has piles and piles of paper with goodness knows what laying on her bedroom floor*

As for books, I'm quickly amassing those, now that I work at my library. *glee* we get first pick of the ones that are too tattered or old to circulate anymore. *holds a handful of reference books that were to be chucked on animals, particularily butterflies and lizards*

Favorite book? Well, I can't say that it's particularily fantasy, nor really about dragons, though there is a reptillian species in it. I don't know if it's still good or not, I last read it in elementary school *book worm* but I'm going over it again. It's called Beowulf's Children, but Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes. Tis a long book! >_< I keep getting snatches of memory of what's going to happen next, though with not a lot of clarity. It's very sci-fi, anyways.

Hey, we're dragons..what's a dragon without a horde? ;) I love the Halfblood Chronicles by Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton...I have yet to read the latest one though. Lots of dragons in there, which is always a good thing!

Mistral: Yes, I remember reading the first one and then going "Uh! But there are no more yet??" .. and then a couple of years later, it seems like, came the second. I can't remember if I've read that one or not. I don't think so ...

Another series I've enjoyed are the Dragon Knight series by Gordon Dickson. I've been re-reading those lately, but I had to pause for the moment 'cause I'm missing one.

Re: Favorite tails... er, tales.
I have quite a book hoard (I've joined book clubs like Sci Fi Book Club and the Folio Society to increase it). I have about a thousand books, though I used to have many more, and had to get rid of them due to a family illness. I hoard other things as well, but that's a topic for a different thread. };=8}

Favorite Dragon stories? Well, to be honest, when it comes to tales of Dragons I'm fairly picky. Most of my favorite books don't actually have Dragons in them. I am somewhat unusual (and perhaps controversial) in that I didn't like the Pern series, and never got into authors like Piers Anthony, Mercedes Lackey and Ann McCaffrey.

In Jr. High, I read the Pit Dragon trilogy by Jane Yolen. I still love the first two books of that series. I was really disappointed in the third book, though. It went to wishy-washy and powergamey for me; it didn't have that grit of the first two books.

I loved just about all of Robin McKinley's books, and at least a couple of those have Dragons -- unfortunately as the enemy, but the stories are great and the writing is good. My favorite of hers, though, is Deerskin, which is Dragon-free.

Favorite books and stories that don't include Dragons are Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, The Crossroads Series by Nick O'Donohoe (no Dragons, but there are gryphs!), and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Well, I could list hundreds more, but those are classics, if you will.

I'm really having a hard time thinking of good Dragon books right now. };=8D Maybe I'll come back to this thread after I've had time to mull.

Re: Favorite tails... er, tales.
Irene Radford, I think is the Author's name, but its one of the more intresting dragon stories I've read, if for anything that teh dragons, though they are very important to the society at large..., aren't often seen or written about as they are more background charcters to the main charcters.

The Glass Dragon is the one book I have most of the collection. ^.^
Check it out sometime. :)

Re: Favorite tails... er, tales.
I've read it, but I really don't remember it very well... hrm. One to reread, perhaps. :) I remember that I read that one at the same time as I read The Sleeping Dragon (can't remember that aurthor...), and not being overly impressed with the latter. That's about the most I recall.

*scratches her head* I also have a vague recollection of reading a book by SP Somotow (sp?) years ago, something about a river..? I didn't like it much then, but since it's been a few years, I was thinking of tracking it down and rereading, but I can't remember the name (although I imagine amazon could help me with that), and I was wondering if anyone else had read it and what their thoughts on it were.

Ah-hah. It was Riverrun, although amazon has his name spelled Somotow and Somtow (only one book listed under te former, strangely).

It kind of makes me wish I lived in a bigger place; the most I'd be able to get signed would be stories about the prairies and heritage things. Not that those are bad, but they aren't exactly my cup of tea.

You must hold that copy pretty close!

That reminds me... my junior high school had a copy of one of the Pern books signed. It makes me wonder how such a book got into their posession!

Well i suppose its not surprising that i have quite a few DragonLance books, including the War of Souls series (which i just finished). My own storyline is currently set in the time right after the Chaos war, but not on Krynn..

I am also partial to the drow stories from ForgottenRealms. Beyond that i have read plenty of Science Fiction and other Fantacy books in the past and have yet to read the DeathGate Cycle series. Each time i consider it, other books just pop up and there is never enough time to read.

I also like to collect seashells, stones, gold coins (when i can get my paws on them) and some drawing books though i am a bit particular about the last. I dont have much space in my little studio. Blackmore's Night is my favorite group and Loreena Mckinnett my favorite singer..and i have all the CDs from both of those. Not sure if i collect much more than that..oh yeah i do have a small collection of roleplaying books..*grins*

Re: Favorite tails... er, tales.
I myself have a small library piled throughout my room. It's mostly fantasy and sci-fi novels, though I do have a large collection of gaming magazines, D&D books, and sketchbooks.

Favorite dragon story in the lot? That's a hard one... Hm. I love the DragonLance Chronicles (is that the correct series name? There's so many of them, I can't keep them all straight...), having just finished rereading the entire series, concluding with my newly aquired Dragons Of A Vanished Moon. Then there's the Halfblood Chronicles by Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton. I got my copy of Elvenbane in a used bookstore because the cover looked neat and I usually enjoy Mercedes Lackey's writing. ^^() I eagerly await the paperback release of the third one. I'm also quite fond of The Glass Dragon by Irene Radford. I've only been able to find the first in one in the trilogy, despite many visits to bookstores worldwide. Rather depressing.

I also have two collections of dragon short stories, Dragon Fantastic and A Dragon-Lover's Treasury Of The Fantastic. They've both got an enjoyable amount of dragon stories... Some better than others. In the Dragon-Lover's Treasury, I've always enjoyed The Ice Dragon, by George R. R. Martin.

I am fond of the Pern series, but only of several of the books. The first ones I read were the Harper Hall trilogy, and they have remained my favorites to this day. Fire lizards. Yey. :)
