Fifty Whales dies after beaching in Indonesia
Fifty whales die after beaching in Indonesia
Sun Mar 19, 5:26 PM ET

JAKARTA (AFP) - Some 50 whales have died after beaching themselves in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province, police said.

A total of some 93 whales of between five and eight meters (16 and 26 feet) in length were beached but local villagers, alerted by fishermen, tried to save as many as they could by dragging them back to the open sea.

"The whales were first sighted along the coast late on Thursday evening and they began to beach themselves in Ponggeran early on the following morning," local police chief Ukas M. Kita, told AFP.

"At least 40 of them were taken to the open sea and released there, but we do not know whether they beached themselves somewhere else," Kita said.

He said that around 50 of the whales that could not be saved had died on the beach and were buried by villagers

I wonder if there is something in the water (besides sonar)
that are affecting the whales and dolphins, as they have
been beaching themselves too.
