Final Goodbye (Closed -- March 30/09)
Lynn looked out the window from her perch in the Gryffindor Girls Dormitory. The view below had always been so comforting, familiar. She was going to miss the Hogwarts grounds so dearly. She’d had many a beauteous walk in the rain … by the lake … skirting the Forbidden Forest … and the castle itself was so full of character, between Peeves, the kitchens where she’d snuck snacks after hours, and its changing staircases. Lynn had loved exploring the haunting courtyard, the secret passages … yes. Hogwarts had been good to her.
She looked back to the bed where her suitcase was shut tight, jammed with her clothes and the books she’d bought in Hogsmeade, along with her school things. She had been tempted to make the bed, but, not only would it be made by a house elf, the rumpled sheets and covers would temporarily remind her housemates of the way she had been, the fun they had had. It wasn’t that long ago that her mother had sent her an owl and told her the news; they were moving to Canada, her mother’s homeland. It was a sudden decision, but it had been briefly talked about at times.
Still – this was even worse than leaving Hogwarts for the summer. At least then, she knew that she would see her friends once fall came. But now, she knew that the chances that she would see the good friends she’d made again were slim, far chancier than she would have liked. Oh, Lynn would do her best to stay in touch, but there would be an ocean between them. It sobered any attempts at sustaining a relationship.
The experiences she had had here – sneaking around the castle with Puck … oh, that delightful, fun-loving girl! Lynn was going to miss not seeing her every day. Dion, the goofball … she would miss his grin. Even Cory and Alex, two of her worst enemies at the school – she would miss their ugly faces. No, not ugly. They were lovely, both of them. Lynn walked back over to the bed, rubbing her suddenly cool hands together to try and warm them. She had worked things out with her professors … she’d told her friends a couple of weeks in advance. They’d spent her remaining time cavorting around Hogsmeade and the school, an entirely delicious experience, all in all.
The train was going to leave soon. She had to go. Lynn hadn’t told her friends the exact time that she was going to go – she didn’t want them to dread it and miss their schoolwork – but last time she’d seen Puck, she’d given the girl a big hug, as well as Arabella, one of her best friends at the school. She was pretty sure that they knew, or at least they would when they saw her empty seat in classes. There was one person who still didn’t know … but they’d spent so much effort avoiding each other for the past while, that it would seem out of place to seek him out now just to say “goodbye”. Besides … they had already said goodbye, in a way.
Lynn sighed, rubbing her forehead as tears pricked her eyes. She couldn’t just leave. She and Sean had been through so much, and even though they weren’t really speaking now, she couldn’t leave without so much as a warning. She glanced at her watch. Yes, she had time, if she hurried. Borrowing a piece of parchment from Puck’s area of the room – her friend would understand – Lynn scribbled a hurried note.
Sean,
You may have heard already, though probably not; I asked my friends to keep it quiet. I don’t know if you’ll even want to know or not, but … oh, I’ll just tell you … I’ve started this, so I’ll finish. I’m leaving, Sean. I’m moving to Canada with mum. I’m sorry I didn’t give you more warning, but I didn’t even know if I was going to tell you, let alone ‘what’ to tell you!
We haven’t talked since that day in the Great Hall and, since I don’t think we’ll ever see each other again, I wanted to be sure that we weren’t left with a bad taste in our mouth. I have loved you, Sean. I did. I don’t know what you’re thinking, whether you dislike me or not, but I doubt it. You’re too kind-hearted to hate anyone. That’s what I love about you. You have such a good heart. I’m sorry – truly, deeply sorry – that things turned out the way they did.
Merlin Bless, Sean.
Lynn
Annoyed, she swiped the tears away from her face and checked in a mirror to be sure that her face wasn’t too blotchy. It wasn’t. Biting her lip, Lynn walked to the door, lugging her suitcase, and glanced around the room one last time. With a sigh, she closed the door behind her and begin to gallop down the stairs. She could drop the letter off at the Owlery on her way. As she left the Gryffindor Common Room, she smiled tearfully at the Fat Lady. Who would have thought that she would be so sad to see her for the last time? With one last wave, Lynn Stuart began to stride down the corridor.
It was time to go.
