Gavin Nightshade
Fixed the history!
OOC
Email Address: lotr_fan2003@msn.com
Your Name: Mads or Maddie
Code: Hermione Granger
IC
Full Name: Gavin Edward Nightshade
Nickname(s): Gav, Gavy, Gavypoo, (strictly a name that his siblings use to annoy him.)
DOB: February 12, 1993
Year: 5th
Blood Type: Half-blood
House Preference: Gryffindor
Why: Gavin is very brave, very selfless, and puts others ahead of himself. He would protect anybody in need, and would never hesitate for a second. Courage is really what he strives for. He wants to be known for his bravery, almost like a knight following a code of chivalry. To him, knowing that you are afraid, but facing your fear, is the greatest gift a person can have. Despite being a Prefect, and trying to set a good example for the younger students, Gavin is a little bit more lax than most Prefects. The main thing that keeps him from losing his Prefect responsibilities is just that; he’s responsible. He gained this skill from taking care of his younger siblings for his entire life. Hufflepuff might be a logical choice, but the fact that Gavin’s a little bit more ‘loose’ than a Hufflepuff, and doesn’t always follow the rules. He also possesses a sense of humor that is very un-Hufflepuffish…
Physical Appearance:
Gavin stands at about 5’ 11”, being a bit more on the tall side for a boy his age. Sometimes his height makes him feel a bit odd, and out of place, but it can work to his advantage, (such as not being called ‘shrimpy.’) He’s quite strong, and weighs a little less than 170 pounds. Gavin would be fast; unfortunately he isn’t gifted in the coordination department, and is one of those people that tend to trip over his own large feet. His entire body, especially his arms and legs are fairly toned, mostly from outdoor labor at his home in the summer, and physically moving his younger siblings to different rooms, so they don’t kill each other. Gavin’s legs make up most of his body’s length, with big hands as well as a long torso to make a tower of toned goofball. All in all, he’s fairly good looking, with his charming dork-ness making him seem more human.
Unlike his sister Maire, Gavin inherited his mother’s fair Irish skin, and freckled face. Most people can tell right away that he’s his mother’s son: they both possess the same auburn hair, and bright blue-green eyes. Many of his father’s features disappeared in Gavin, but he still holds the chiseled good looks of his dad, and the infamous white, and almost doggish grin that just makes people laugh. When he was a child, his parents also indulged in braces for all of their children, so Gavin’s teeth are very straight. High cheekbones sport a hearty dash of freckles year round, but intensify greatly in the summer, almost to a point that Gavin has a tan. Feathery eyebrows frame Gavin’s flirtatious blue-green eyes, which stand out in a crowd because of their brightness and rich color. Ever since he’s been a little kid, his dark red hair has also made him very noticeable. His hair seems to have a mind of it’s own, cowlicks sticking up no matter how much water he tries to flatten it with. It doesn’t seem to help that he’s always running his hand through his hair out of habit. A pretty average looking nose sits on the middle of Gavin’s face, and smile lines give way to wide, but rather plain looking lips.
Not wanting to infringe on the Hogwarts standard uniform, (and very much unlike his sister Maire,) Gavin wears the uniform as you have to; white oxford shirt, gray v-neck sweater, the gray slacks, and humdrum black shoes. To change things up a little bit, Gavin will roll up his oxford sleeves a little past his elbow just about everyday that it isn’t freezing. The gold and red Gryffindor tie is done up pretty loosely, but the Professors don’t seem to mind as much as they used to. Gavin rarely wears his long black robes, unless under ceremony, or traveling through the wizarding world. He would be much more inclined to leave it at home. He’ll wear the traditional house-colored scarf in the winter months, and usually has to don the robes by then.
When not at school or on the weekends, Gavin’s most comfortable in Muggle clothing, thanks to his half-blood upbringing. Plain dark jeans, sweaters, sneakers, tee shirts, and a wide assortment of sweatshirts are his most comfortable garb, and what he wears anywhere that doesn’t require a robe. He loves his black and very worn Bally Castle Bats sweatshirt, and says it give him good luck. His mother insists that there are more holes than actual sweatshirt.
Personality:
Despite Gavin’s personality on the surface being strongly Hufflepuffish, he merely shares some of their traits, but is strongly leaning toward the Gryffindor way of life and personality. Gavin follows his own strict rules about courage: without it, you are nothing. He looks at people and his idols based on their courage. He respects people that are brave and selfless, and who generally help the world by standing up for something they believe in. He himself is very brave, but despite that, he is afraid of some things, like losing the ones he loves, and an irrational fear of heights, but deals with it by admitting he’s afraid. To him, that is the key to facing your fears. Gavin follows his own moral rules like a knight following the Code of Chivalry.
However serious his “rules” are, Gavin still likes to have fun, essentially, and is a very humorous individual. He laughs at himself and at life, finding humor in a lot of different things. He likes to make people laugh, and will do almost anything for a chuckle of amusement. Gavin’s naturally a very social person, and likes to be the center of attention sometimes, while at other times, sometimes likes to be a spectator instead of a participant. In general; a goofball that can cheer anyone up. Gavin is also very good about keeping his mouth shut, whereas, his sister Maire hasn’t really mastered that skill quite yet. Most of the time, Gavin thinks before he says anything that might offend someone, but in the rare case that this does happen, he quickly tries to apologize for it, whether he meant it or not. Gavin is also blessed with a virtue that not many possess: patience. He has a knack for knowing when to be patient, always realizing that being calm about something will be easier than being obsessive about it. He’s very kind to people he first meets, and makes a good first impression, as he is very warm and easy-going.
Gavin will occasionally share his thoughts with someone who is close to him, but isn’t usually very open most of the time. He is passionate and shares his thoughts on a limited number of things: he will express his opinions on people he loves, strongly like, or strongly dislike. He also will stand up for his Quidditch team, the Bally Castle Bats in any social situation.
He also can be very flirtatious and charming in a goofy sort of way towards girls he particularly likes, but in case of a girlfriend, all such behavior will desist until he is single once more. Usually, Gavin is pretty serious about his relationships, and makes a wonderful boyfriend, as he is very loyal and reassuring. Girls are probably his biggest weakness when he is single, and keep him fairly distracted. Because he has so many friends, the whole element of keeping up with them can also be very distracting and daunting.
If you happen to take the time to make Gavin angry, you will be strongly rewarded. Gavin is almost never angry to an extent, but once he has hit that certain stage, he gets to be loud and loose his calm. Anything that he may be holding back suddenly comes spilling forth in a wave, as well as other such curse words and obscenities. He doesn’t stay angry for long on the outside, but mentally is still thinking about the argument even days afterward. Sometimes his mixed blessing of not sharing his feelings can be frustrating to some, as he may seem distracted, or to not have an opinion. He truly does, he just doesn’t’ express it in a way that many people would understand.
The Gryffindor is also fairly intelligent, receiving good marks throughout his school career, and becoming a Prefect thanks to his respect for responsibility. He has quite the knack for Transfiguration and Charms, because most of the practice is logical, something Gavin excels in. He feels that any problem has an answer, if taken logically. However, anything that takes creativity Gavin will struggle in, as he doesn’t really think in that mind set. He also does well in Muggle classes such as math and science, simply because they always follow rules, and don’t take a lot of creativity to sort out. Any time a problem is facing him, and really can’t be taken logically, Gavin will be thrown for a loop, and mentally block himself from figuring out the solution. However, if a logical problem needs facing, Gavin is the man to do it.
Despite being responsible and kind, Gavin also has a weakness for participating in practical jokes that Maire has cajoled him into. He likes the occasional prank with some moderation, and is fairly lax in that respect for a Prefect. Gavin definitely isn’t the Prefect who holds an iron grip over the student body. He more often then not will try to discourage somebody committing a wrongdoing then swoop down on them at first glance. Gavin doesn’t lust to be a law enforcer, but rather a leader. He is very upbeat and cheerful for most of the day. His main weakness: waking up early. Gavin is an absolute bear in the mornings, or he doesn’t really come out of his half-sleep daze until lunchtime. He is no stranger to late night parties, but is definitely not a morning bird. He literally cannot function under such circumstances. Getting up at 7:00? Never…
History:
Gavin was born as the third child to Garreth and Shea Nightshade in the middle of a chilly October afternoon, subsequently born in the same hospital as his two siblings before him. (Gavin’s mother insisted on his middle name being the name of his late grandfather Edward. He kept his last name of Nightshade, and the end result of his name is GEN.)
Both of his parents were half blood wizards, and met at Hogwarts. They started to date in their 3rd year, having a very close, and romantic relationship. They married a few years after leaving the school. Neither family was terribly wealthy, but combined they had enough money to buy a small Victorian home, and have their first child Liam. Soon after Liam came Shannon, the Nightshade’s first and long awaited daughter. Gavin and Maire came within only a year and a half of each other, and the youngest child, Brendan came a few years after. Gavin has always grown up, not only with his siblings, but has been very close with his favorite cousin, Erica Nightshade, who now attends Hogwarts as a seventh year. Erica’s father, Nathaniel, has always been Gavin’s favorite uncle as well.
Just as Maire had been brought up, Gavin’s way of life was no different. Both of his parents tried to acclimate him to certain things about the wizarding way, (like Quidditch,) and a normal Muggle lifestyle, (for instance, how to use a washing machine without going ballistic.) They did very well, as Gavin feels comfortable in either scenario.
Being born third out of five children sets Gavin right in the middle, making him feel “in the middle” about a lot of things. He learned a lot from his older siblings Liam and Shannon, and in turn, is an expert at taking care of Maire and Brendan. That has been his role since he’s been very little; taking care of Maire and Brendan. Most of the time, the two of them are his responsibility, making him a very responsible individual and also, very good with kids. His mother has always had a big affect on him, as well as his strong loyalty to the Bally Castle Bats, his Quidditch team of choice.
Nothing truly proved that Gavin had magical ability: nothing really astounding happened. Gavin wasn’t one with a temper, nor did he do stupid things, (like falling out of trees as Maire had done) to prove that he could magically sustain an injury. The Nightshades had feared the worst, until a morning in mid-summer when Gavin received his letter from Hogwarts. Just like his two siblings before him, Gavin was magically inclined, and would soon be attending Hogwarts.
Once Gavin had received his letter, the “house rivalry” began. When Shea and Garreth had attended Hogwarts, Garreth had been sorted into Ravenclaw, whereas Shea had immediately sat down at the Gryffindor table. With Liam having been in Gryffindor, and Shannon in Ravenclaw, the two parents started in on Gavin, always debating which house he would inevitably be sorted into. Only time would tell as the parents prepared Gavin for his new school experience. Just like his two siblings before him, his parents also gave him a barn owl, which he named Myron after the lead singer of the Weird Sisters.
As it is usually, first year was very exciting and different for Gavin. He opened up to the wonder of magic, and really enjoyed this year. Despite not showing a strong magical nature at the beginning of his life, Gavin adjusted extremely well to the new school life, unlike many. He found school to be a welcomed change, and met a great deal of friends, as well as enjoyed being with his sister, who was already a 5th year by the time Gavin arrived. Even as a 5th year, Gavin still has some of his original friends who started with as a “firstie” such as the scheming Puck Goodfellow.
Second year was as comforting as the first, with classes being slightly harder, and Gavin making more friends. His sister was still there, and now he had more freedom because of his parent’s trust. And now it was his turn to take care of somebody at Hogwarts; Maire had now also joined the Hogwarts throng as a 1st year. Fortunately, or unfortunately, Gavin was bit by the lovebug quite early, and developed a keen interest in girls. He’s always been the romantic type…
In third year Gavin aspired to becoming a Prefect after he had continually noticed the type of work the Prefects did. He thought that becoming a Prefect would be a good responsible position for him.
Fourth year was probably the most romantic so far. No longer was Gavin a little boy: he had changed a lot over the summer, and his hormones were now raging as loudly as ever. This was the first year that Shannon wasn’t going to be with him at school, and it seemed to give him a huge sense of freedom.
Now, fifth year is fast approaching, with O.W.L.’s, Prefect duties, and Gavin’s most serious girlfriend yet? Can he handle it?
Roleplay Sample:
Gavin Nightshade stumbled into his bedroom, his heavy school trunk being dragged behind him. He set the heavy black trunk down on his carpeted floor, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. “I’m not as young as I used to be,” he jokingly said to no one in particular before carefully trying not to upset a pile of socks at his feet.
His mother went a bit mental around the late summer months, right before Gavin would be leaving for Hogwarts. It happened every year: she would wash enormous amounts of clothes, insisting, “You can never have too many pairs of clean underwear.” It was definitely enough underwear.
The redhead glanced about his room, sighing. Soon, he would be sharing his bedroom with four other boys, and never would he set foot in a clean room again. Not that he would call his room at the moment clean, but he could dream, couldn’t he? Piles of clothes everywhere; on his bed, under his bed, on the window ledges, by his door, and his personal favorite, underwear stacked three feet high by his bedside table.
Kicking open the lid of his trunk, Gavin began to refold his clothes, and placed them as tightly as he could into the allotted space. “Ties…socks…enough underwear to supply the Ministry…” he mumbled, squishing the labeled articles of clothing with all of his strength.
After an hour or so of this, he had done it. Everything was in the trunk…now if it would only fit. He desperately tried to sit on the lit, pushing down, and not succeeding when the lid flung him off into a heap next to his bed. He heard a laugh from his door.
”Very graceful, Gavypoo,” his sister Maire exclaimed, as she waltzed into his room, a pile of skirts on her arm. “I can help you, ya know,” she said teasingly, as she set down the pile, and prepared to sit.
The siblings wrestled with the trunk, but managed to get it closed with some strength and Spello-Tape. They leaned against the trunk; Maire had whipped out a white bag filled with Gummy Gargoyles awhile back, and now they were happily chewing. “Are you excited for your fifth year?” Maire asked her older brother, before artfully tearing a cherry Gargoyles head off.
“Ah, not really. O.W.L.’s to look forward to. Prefect duties. Not really much, no…” he trailed off, leaving out one crucial detail.
“That’s not all. What about that pretty girl, hmmm? The one who keeps sending you letters?” Maire asked slyly, brown eyes alight.
“I knew you were looking into my stuff,” Gavin glared, lightly punching Maire’s arm.
“I just want you to know, I think she’s pretty. Is her name Caelin?”
“Yes,” Gavin replied, turning the slightest shade of pink.
“Tell me about her!” Maire grinned cheekily.
“I think it’s past your bedtime,” Gavin retorted, laughing. Yes, this was going to be a good year.
Celebrity Avatar: Dan Eisengart, another random guy for Ford Models…except Gavypoo has red hair, but we’ll skim around that.
