Germaine has a Hunter hang-up
Germaine has a Hunter hang-up

SERIAL Aussie-basher Germaine Greer has slammed a portrait of Steve Irwin that replaced hers in the National Portrait Gallery as unmanly.
Greer described the Crocodile Hunter as vulnerable and simpering in the photo now hanging in Canberra.
"His left thumb is hooked rather coyly in a pocket; his lime-green shirt is undone to the fourth button, and pulled open to display his bosom in a manner not altogether manly."
The acid-tongued expat unleashed a storm of outrage when she attacked Irwin hours after he was killed by a stingray last September, writing: "The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin."
Her house outside London has since been trashed by Crocodile Hunter fans.
"Lately someone has been throwing food at the windows of my house in England, mostly eggs," Greer sniffled in her latest column in The Guardian.
"Sometimes jam doughnuts, once corned beef hash and shaved ham, and this weekend, two dead rabbits."
Greer commended the gallery for hanging Irwin's portrait, then sank the boot again.
She claimed Irwin "made many Australians cringe".
"It is my judgment Irwin made a habit of, and a fortune by, intruding upon the steadily diminishing space available to wild creatures, and that his intention was to demonstrate his power over them, in much the same way as lion-tamers used to do before what they did was recognised as cruelty," Greer wrote.
Despite the huge outpouring of grief around Australia for Irwin, she refused to change her tune.
Greer said that Irwin's death had been no great loss to the conservation movement, and that he was "counter-productive".
She even insinuated Irwin was up to no good in the photographic portrait, taken at his Australian Zoo with a female elephant called Siam.
Greer claimed his right hand was "doing something invisible to the captive animal".
Australians who admired Irwin weren't fair dinkum, wrote the woman who hasn't lived Down Under for years.
"As Australia gradually morphs into California, it is losing its respect for honesty and directness," Greer wrote.
