Goose in a Bottle... (a story paraphrased to pass on)
This story begins at a silent spiritual retreat... the leader prompting a very valuable parable/lesson... On one particular day, he began with the idea of imagining that a goose were in a bottle. We, as the retreat attendees, join in on the visualization practice.
Anyhow, he goes on to ask how, if it were up to us, would we get the goose out of the bottle?
As you could imagine, we all began thinking, pondering, planning, musing, and conjecturing, trying desperately to figure out how to get that darned goose out of the bottle (all silently, of course!). We thought so hard that our brains hurt, and yet the answer was still elusive. We knew there had to be a solution – all riddles have one, after all.
And then, softly and quietly, he reminded us that we had only imagined the goose was in the bottle.
Wow. Breathe that in for a minute. We had only imagined the goose was in the bottle.
So, to get him out, we simply had to wake up and have the realization that our imagination had created his circumstance in the first place. In reality, it never was. Do you get that? Simple, but not always easy.
In case you haven’t figured it out by now (but I’m guessing you have since you are all such enlightened, conscious beings!), we’re the goose. And, everyday, we have the opportunity to wake up and remember the truth of who we are. We are not in a bottle, separate from others, our dreams, our hopes and desires, our past or our future, our environment, love, compassion or the eternal spirit. We ARE all those things, right here and now. We are bigger than we ever imagined.
And, once we realize there is no proverbial bottle – aka our fears of separateness, not enough-ness, unlovability, etc. – we have the freedom to re-imagine who we are. To truly see ourselves as joint creators in this universe, whose essence is nothing less than pure, unadulterated love.
