Out of the picture ... in a move "unrelated" to expat loony Germaine
Greer's comments about Steve Irwin, the National Portrait Gallery has
replaced her nude photo with a picture of the late Croc Hunter.
THE portrait of potty expat Germaine Greer has been removed from the National Portrait Gallery - in favour of the man she ridiculed, Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.
The nude photo of the ageing academic has been sent to the basement, while a newly acquired picture of Irwin with an elephant has been put up in its place.
Greer famously attacked Irwin after his death from a stingray barb last year, making the bizarre claim animals had "taken revenge" on him.
National Portrait Gallery spokesman David Edghill said there was no "political motivation" in swapping the pictures.
"It does look fabulously ironic, but there was no agenda behind it," he said. "We don't play portraits or personalities against each other."
The portrait features in the main hall of the gallery's premises at Old Parliament House, Canberra.
The photo of Irwin was taken by Australian photographer Robin Sellick at Australia Zoo in 2005 and donated to the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra after his death.
Mr Sellick's photos of former Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone, Lleyton Hewitt, Shane Warne and Bert Newton also appear in the gallery's collections.
A gallery spokesman said Irwin was between Eddie Mabo and actors David Gulpilil and Deborah Mailman.
