H. P. Lovecraft
What do you think about HPL and other pulp era authors?
what do you thing about English authors like Arthur Machen or Algernon Blackwood? Do you think they are a better or worse storytellers than Kiernan:D , Brite:) or Rice (which I despise >: )

For me they are some of the best early XX century writers of supernatural fiction ever.
And, not to forget the morbid uncle Ambrose Bierce.... :)

BLACKWOOD
I've got a collection of some of Blackwood's stories and they're all great. In fact, a lot of them reminded me of Clive Barker. Usually, it's hard for me to get into just about anything written before 1950 or so, but the Blackwood books was a breeze, very good stuff.

Re: BLACKWOOD
Indeed they are.
Try to find Arthur Machen. He's also great. Watch out for his novel "The Three Impostors" and for his other tales... you can find almost everything on the web.
If you like Blackwood, you will surely like Machen.
About Clive Barker - he is British like his forerunners. And it is obvious that they are all binded by their literature history. Maybe Ramsey Campbell is a better example for what is Machen's, Blackwood's, Jame's and Lovecraft's legacy. Hey, but I like that. I worship them all.0]

You should try M. R. James too.

BTW, are you familiar with H. P. Lovecraft?

greetings,
D.

Lovecraft
I'm familiar with Lovecraft mostly only through the movies they make based on his stories, but I did read one a few years ago. Can't remember the name of it, but I remember thinking he'd gone into TOO much detail and that a little mystery concerning what the creature looked like would have been nice. I want to say that I know everyone else seems blown over by his work, but that I wasn't overly impressed, but it's just the one story I read. I do have a book of his around here somewhere that I hope to get to someday.
