Help a newbie out with some starter advice
Hey beefans,
I need a little help and advice as I know nothing about beekeeping but here's my story ......
I have a (quite large) mound of soil at the bottom of my garden which is due to be dug up tomorrow ... a couple of days ago I found what looked to be like a nest in it - it had torn paper and wadding at the entrance. So - you can imagine the kind of nervous dance I did when I thought it was a rat's nest.
After much trepidation, alcohol and praying to God for targetted lightning strikes, I ventured back out there for a closer inspection. Only to fall head over heels in love with these furry black and orange bees!! After a bit of net research I think they're bumbles and I know that they are protected here (UK). I really want to plant the right flowers etc and keep them - just not in the bottom of my garden in a mound of soil!
Here are my questions ... firstly, common sense tells me that I should stop the workmen from digging the mound up, right? I also want to know if they sting (the bees - I already know that the workmen do!) I have a 9 year old and a 2 year old. The youngest suffers from asthma quite badly - will a sting aggravate this?
I'd love ideally to buy a hive and relocate them (not the kids - THE BEES!) *novel idea* Does anyone know where I can get my hands pretty quickly on a suitable hive ... finally - how do I go about digging up the nest and relocating them to a hive? I'm not knowledgable (or brave) enough to do it myself ... are there expert people around that will dig up the nest for me and place them safely and stress-free into my hive?
Any suggestions would be very appreciated asap ... thanks!
