OOC
Name: Sophie

Age: 20
Code: Hermoine Granger
IC:
Full Name: Jade Amia Howe
Nickname(s): none
DOB: 12/10/94
Year: 4th
Blood: Half-blood
House Preference: Gryffindor
Why:
Jade was one of those students who sat down on the Sorting stool only to have “Gryffindor!” shouted out before the Hat had fully come to rest on her head. She is a spitfire, a bold rambunctious girl with no perception of the word fear and just as vague a grasp on the concept of behaving. Ravenclaws would have no use for her, for she is never quiet and only studies under dire circumstances. Hufflepuff House would grow weary of her, for although she is loyal as a hound, she is halfhearted when it comes to school and is hardly hardworking, in that sense. Slytherin, too, passed her by, for her only ambition is to win the Quidditch House Cup. Truly the house for her is Gryffindor.
Physical Appearance:
Jade is one of those people who positively radiates energy. Her thick, chin length black hair frizzes out from her head in a mane of unruly curls that would never lie straight no matter how much she brushed it, not that she ever really bothers—appearance is not a high priority to her. The only switch from her usual apathy on appearance are two quarter-inch thick braids that lie over each ear, dyed green and secured at the end with black beads—a dress code breach that has been responsible for nearly a fourth of her annual detention quota.
Jade has a rather boyish physique. At 5 foot 6 inches she is taller than most of the girls in her year, though not so tall that she dwarfs the guys. Her 120 pounds are attributed mostly to muscle and not at all to an absolutely flat chest. Nicely toned legs and arms were developed during several years of drumming and Beater practice.
Testimony to a lot of time spent outdoors, Jade has the sort of natural tan that might be found on a farmer, rather than the fake bronze of frequent tanning booth customers. In contrast to her slender body, Jade has a round, childlike face and large, exuberant green eyes that have an eager, puppy-like quality. Her nose is round and slightly upturned. She has crooked teeth that she is rather proud of (“normal teeth are boring”), and is always displaying them in laughter, grins, or exuberant speech.
Jade values comfort and practicality over style—outside of class she is most often seen in a t-shirt, jeans and battered old sneakers. The school uniform is sheer torture to her and she has more than once voiced a complaint to the Headmistress that the dress code should be changed and girls be allowed to wear pants. The best description of her dress is casual— socks falling down, shirt unbuttoned at the collar and tie untied, until she gets yelled at to “straighten up” (which happens often).
Personality:
If Jade had actually been switched at birth with a Mexican Jumping Bean, nobody would be too surprised. The Gryffindor is loud, boisterous and always on the move. She has a feisty personality, always speaks her mind, and has no problem telling others that they’re wrong, even teachers. She is blunt and sometimes insulting, although she isn’t intentionally cruel. She also gets a perverse joy out of aggravating her parents.
Jade is a tomboy through and through, and nothing gets her fired up more than those who insinuate girls are somehow less than boys. Much like a preteen boy, she loves to be outdoors, climbing trees and getting dirty. Jade hates uncomfortable clothes and shoes, and the only thing she loathes more than dresses is lace. She has little patience for those girls who are obsessed with appearances and can’t stand the smell of perfume (and will say so).
Jade hates silence. If she deems a room too quiet, she will talk to herself, sing, hum or drum on any surface. She loves to crack jokes, even bad ones. The Gryffindor also has a passion for arguing, which can sometimes lead to fighting. She is a champion debater and will not stop until she is either dragged away or until the other admits she’s right, even if she’s not. Although not a bully, Jade is not averse to resorting to physical violence to defend herself, her friends, or her ideals.
One of Jade’s most aggravating habits is the fact that she just can’t sit still. She is always jiggling a foot or tapping her fingers or drumming on the desk. She is a girl always in motion, with the only exception being mornings, when she must be literally dragged out of bed.
History:
Jade was born in Wadebridge, England, the third child and only daughter of Lizabet Brent-Howe, a muggle born witch, and John Howe, a muggle. Lizabet is a secretary at the Ministry of Magic, and John an accountant—both very boring people, in Jade’s eyes. Her two brothers are Malk (six years older) and Flyn (four years older). It was a fairly muggle upbringing— they lived in a muggle town, attended the muggle primary school and used muggle conveniences such as dishwashers and televisions rather than doing things magically. It wasn’t until Malk went off to Hogwarts that Jade really got exposed to magic, and then she couldn’t wait to learn it herself.
Perhaps because she was their only daughter, Jade’s parents at first tried to raise her as a proper young lady, going so far as to hire an etiquette tutor, but Jade so terrorized the instructor that the poor woman ran screaming from the house one day and never returned. Although her mother wished her to be civilized, Jade wanted nothing more than to be one of the guys, and her brothers were more than happy to oblige her. They instructed her in the art of practical jokes, brought her along as they explored abandoned houses and forbidden junkyards, and even taught her Quidditch, where Jade learned she had a natural talent for whacking large dangerous objects at opponents.
As a surprise present, upon receiving her letter from Hogwarts, Jade’s brothers chipped in to buy her a starter drum kit. With Malk on guitar and Flyn playing bass, they created their own band. It was the final straw for their parents—they kicked 17-year-old Malk out of the house, claiming he was a bad influence. Their band, “And Howe”, continued to practice in the basement apartment Malk was renting, and soon they were getting gigs all throughout Cornwall.
By the time September rolled around, Jade was rather disappointed to leave her drums and her band behind, but her disappointment was short-lived. Hogwarts was all she had wanted it to be, and within a week she was getting into trouble with the best of them. Howlers were a common sight for Jade at the breakfast table, and she would open them with much flourish, grinning at her gathered Housemates. Making friends came easily to Jade—she considered everyone a friend until they gave her a reason to believe otherwise. On the same level, making enemies came just as easily to Jade. She willingly upheld the age old Slytherin rivalry, especially on the Quidditch pitch. Though her constant detentions prevented her from making the first string, Jade accepted the position of reserve Beater with pride.
Returning home at the end of the year was the last thing Jade wanted to do. Although she had managed to stay at Malk’s place over Christmas, there was no way she could avoid her parents for the entire summer. When September rolled around once again she was the first person on the train. Although she was getting into more trouble than ever, the Howlers became less and less. Lizabet was giving up on her wayward daughter. Jade still stole the spotlight at breakfast, however, by taking the Sunday Prophet each week—her older brother Malk had secured a job writing music reviews for the paper, and Jade wowed the table with his reports of meeting glamorous bands, sharing pictures and souvenirs he sent her.
Summer break proved to be even worse than it had the previous year. The tension continued to build in the Howe family, and soon Flyn could take it no longer—on his 17th birthday he packed up and moved to London. Jade was so devastated that she ran away from home, showing up at her brother Flyn’s flat a day later. After a lot of shouting and arguing (something Jade was already quite good at), Jade’s parents agreed that she could live with Flyn, as long as she continued to attend school.
Jade’s third year opened up all new possibilities for having fun with the start of Hogsmeade visits. The Gryffindor took to haunting Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes and Zonko’s Joke Shop at every opportunity, sometimes purchasing, other times just absorbing the atmosphere and joining in the retelling of hilarious pranks. Grade-wise, Jade was barely scraping by, to the point that her brother Flyn was forced to crack down on her a bit. Once she began to apply herself, Jade managed to pull down reasonable grades, although she made it clear to all that she didn’t enjoy studying.
RP Sample:
Jade stared out the window, not really seeing the dreary landscape that lay before her, instead seeing an imagined paradise of sun and sea and sand. She wondered what it would be like to live in Hawaii, or even Africa, where it was always warm and sunny without all the bloody rain that seemed to plague Britain. It wasn’t even a nice, thrilling thunderstorm, with dazzling lightning and thunder that reached deep inside of you. Oh no, it was that horrible drizzle that made the entire world gray and erased any prospect of spending the day outside.
What made things even worse was the fact that it was Spring Break, a time that should be spent relaxing in the grass by the lake in a t-shirt and cutoffs, not curled in a chair in the Common Room trying to keep warm. Besides, the humidity made her hair frizz out even more than usual, giving her the appearance of a Pomeranian that had gone through the clothes dryer without fabric softener.
Not only was it dreary and cold in here, but it was quiet, with only the occasional rustle of papers and soft scratching of quills to break the monotony. Although Jade couldn’t be less concerned with upcoming exams, her Housemates weren’t taking them so lightly; as a result the common room had come to resemble the library. Jade couldn’t stand it. She was going to lose her mind. She had to do something!
Frantically her hands searched the pockets of her robes, looking for something, anything, to alleviate her boredom. She started tossing things onto the ground—an old chewed up quill, a crumpled up Famous Witches and Wizards Card, a lone Gobstone. A few people studying glared at her in aggravation. Finally her fingers closed on a small item in a wrapper. Jade’s scowling face broke into a grin. She popped the piece of Droobles Best Blowing Gum into her mouth and began to chew, quickly progressing to blowing bubbles. As the brilliant blue bubbles began to fill the common room, she heard an outraged cry, and then the populace of the common room converged on her, their voices mingling in anger at their studies disrupted. Jade could only smile and shrug, eyes wide and innocent. “What’d I do?”
