Just starting playing
Ok ima bit late on the NWN train and just curious if there is anything I should know? Planning on playing multiplayer with my gf and a few others. Know very little about 3E rules, and wanting a swashbuckly/scout char.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If you plan on taking rogue levels, take rogue your first level because you get a huge amount of skill points. Also remember you don't have to use skill points every level, so you can save them up for level ups in classes you need those points in. If you were taking only a few rogue levels you'd save points so you could put more in detect traps and disarm traps for example; or if you were a rogue taking only a few fighter levels, you could keep discipline maxed.
Rogue works well multiclassing with most of the tank classes. Be aware that you need to have natural wisdom/int/charisma for your maximum spell casting level. That is, a rogue-ranger with 10 wisdom cannot cast any ranger spells no matter how much wisdom equipment he puts on.

Bards also work well for a swashbuckly type of player. Rogues are also a great class, and maybe a bard/rogue would be a good idea. If you are looking to powergame you would also want a level of shadowdancer if you have the second expansion for the ability to hide in plain sight.
Re: Just starting playing
Try to keep in mind the way experience penalties work. If you separate your classes by more than 1 level you will have an experience penalty, unless the separated classes are in your favored class. If you take three different classes, you can keep your favored class on top or below the other two and not have an experience penalty.
Wondering what class combos would deal the most dmg with rogue being main class. Do rangers get a tracking like skill? Right now im thinking Rogue/Shdowdancer/fighter. Looking for pure melee oriented char.
Thanks again.

Re: Just starting playing
If you're looking for pure melee then I'd go mostly fighter with a few levels of rogue for sneak attack.
If you're looking for doing the most damage with a rogue class then a level of shadowdancer is a must because you can continually hide in plain sight and keep sneak attacking people (undead and constructs are a big problem though, as is anything immune to criticals). The assassin death attack is also nice because it will paralyze the victim allowing for more sneak attacks.
Still, I don't think many rogue combos will come close to some of the warrior type damage builds out there with devastating and overwhelming critical (weapon masters are good).
Re: Just starting playing
10 rogue/6 fighter/4 barb is a good combo. It requires human, halfelf or halfling to avoid the exp penalty. I like 10 rogue because the bonus feat at 10 is very powerful.
Another good one is 10 rogue/10 ranger. I'm not sure if ranger gets discipline as a class skill without HOTU installed, it makes a difference since that's a very important skill (for a tank at least). 10 ranger gives you a third favored enemy and +3 to hit on all of them. 10 rogue gives you the bonus feat.
Crippling strike can quickly disable an opponent and make them immobile, though it is obviously more useful for P v P.
Re: Just starting playing
How does tracking work in NWN? If at all.
Dusted off my 3E Players Handbook and been reading it over and comeing up with a few class/lvl combos.
Curious if 10rog/6rng/4ftr would be a good one? 4fighter for the Weapon Spec. 6ranger for 1 spell and the 2nd favored enemy aswell as tracking, and the 10 rogue for the special abilities. Half Elf btw

Re: Just starting playing
There really isn't any form of tracking in the game. It would be a rather tough thing to implement given the way the game works.
In the second expansion there are 'tracks' that you can often follow and get clues from, but any character can see them. It supposed it would be possible for a module builder to make a different message appear for tracks given the PCs class and level, maybe allowing a Ranger to get more information than a cleric, but I don't think any of the campaigns do that.
Re: Just starting playing
Yeah I wonder whether the tracks provide more info if you're a ranger. In one quest in the first expansion being a ranger helps you track down something.
Anyway, I don't recommend taking less than 9 ranger levels. The ranger's biggest benefit may be the free 3 feats they receive for dual wield, but the last one isn't until 9. I don't believe dual wield is worth using at higher levels when it adds only one attack but a -2 to hit on all attacks. Improved dual wield is needed.
Re: Just starting playing
Looks like I was wrong, a ranger can indeed find some extra tracks for a side quest in the first chapter of the first expansion. Very nice.
