June 1st - June 19th
It's almost summer! The last few weeks of school have come, and students will need to study hard for their final exams! Don't let up yet, or your grades won't be what you want them to. Of course, the weather is almost perfect and pristine, in attempts to lure students away from their studies.
Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
Why were days so long. Why did they seem to just last forever. Couldn't you just wish for it to end and the next one to start. Maybe if that could happen then you could just move on with your life and hope for something better. The furture did change after all. Day to day life just seemed to change you in different directions, even when you didn't want it to.
Especially at school, the day seemed to drag on. By the time it was Christmas break the whole school routine had just become so monotous that you knew that the days were just going to get longer and longer.
This was one reason why Mack just wished she could give up on life; all she wanted to do was lie in bed and never be bothered again. Today was just one of those days for the fifth year.
The fifth year was returning back to her domitory late one night after one of her few study sessions in the library. That was all she really did lately: study. She just didn't really care to be with anyone. Occasionally she would find a nice quiet place outside for a smoke or a quick swig of a drink but other than that she stayed in her dormitory, or studied. The last couple of days she had taken up wandering the castle aimlessly, not knowing what to do with her time. There was definantly a stupor in her life since the 'accident'.
Mack trudged along the corridors, she was one of the last students out, it was almost curfew. Her steps were growing heavier with each step. All Mack wanted was to change out of her jeans and into her pajamas. She was so tired. The night before she awoke with nigthmares and didn't get much sleep after that.
In a sleep walking like manner Mack neared the Ravenclaw Common room. Her eyes were fluttering between closed and open; not the usual blinking, but the nodding off kind. At one point she actually did fall asleep, her book falling to the ground as she stood still.
The thump of the book caused Mack to open her eyes and made her slightly more awake. She looked down at the book and groaned a tired groan. She knelt down to pick her book up but then went to all fours. Finally she just gave in to her body and crumpled her body fully on the carpeted floor of the corridor. Her back was against the wall and her body was in a curled position.
Mack wrapped herself up in her long black cloak and closed her eyes. Relaxation hit her. It felt so good to be laying there, not walking, not dragging herself to the forever far away common room. Her book was a couple of feet past her head, she didn't bother to move it closer to her.
All the fifth year cared about was that she was resting at the moment. If she fell asleep there and woke to find a crowd of confused peers, on their way to breakfast, surrounding her she wouldn't of cared. At the moment she was satisfied. If she was to fall alseep there for the night than that was fine by her.
Exhaustion wasn't one to be argued with. Even if you mentally could push yourself eventually the body took over. It crashed, and that was what was happening to Mack at the moment. Her body was tired and just needed to rest and who was Mack to deny what her body was plainly telling her.
She would remain in the corridor as long as needed, or at least until she was unpleasantly interrupted by a passing teacher, ghost, or student. At the moment Mack couldn't care less of who it was. All she wanted was to lay in the corridor and not move until she wanted to. This was definantly a first for Mack and it was most welcomed.
Currently past curfew, Mark was just doing a quick sweep of the corridors to make sure no students were out and wandering about, getting into trouble and such. Not that Mark was an uptight goody-goody sort of person, but when you’re offered the position of Prefect you couldn’t really turn it down. There was little real work to do, and the title held some power, however little that amount may have been. Who turned down privileges? Not Mark, that was for sure.
And so he found himself wandering the hallways himself, only a little tired from the past day’s events. He’d been taking pictures like a maniac recently, and was almost out of film. As he walked down yet another corridor he made a mental note to buy more film and solution… or at least to tell his parents to order him some more the next time they were out. If he couldn’t develop his film then there was a very good chance that the pressures of actually having to focus on school would drive him insane.
Mark wasn’t one to take the time to be academically gifted. He got average marks in all of his classes, but that was just it, average. He didn’t strive to do very well in anything other than Potions and Charms, and yet he never received a poor mark in his life. He just didn’t have the drive that some of his peers had to stress over schoolwork all of the time. He knew that he wanted to be a photographer, and for that he needed to know Potions and Charms, and that was it.
All of those thoughts were bumped from his mind as he noticed a dark figure among the shadows of the stone corridor. He swept off to the left of the hall to get a better look, and as he came closer he noticed that the figure was a body, slumped over by one of the side walls. A book was open next to the person, whom he saw was a girl, and looked as though it had been dropped. As he got right next to the girl, he noticed that it was none other than Mack Raelene, a Ravenclaw girl from his year. He’d had a run-in with her at the lake earlier in the school year, and had to admit that while she had a reputation for being slightly distant she was really a nice girl, and quite entertaining to talk to.
Mark’s initial thought, what with the Dragon Pox going around earlier and the hostages taken during Christmas break, was that she had been attacked. That, or perhaps she had fallen ill and fainted. The rational portion of his brain reminded him that it was night, and she may have just been sleeping, but as a true Prefect he knew he couldn’t just let his assumptions guide him. He had to do something.
He knelt down next to her, noticed that she was breathing lightly, and decided that chances were that she was simply sleeping. Though how anybody could fall asleep on the cold, stone floor of the corridor was beyond him. He reached out his hand and shook her gently on the shoulder, knowing that he had to wake her up and get her back to the Ravenclaw Common Room before any of the Professors came around.
“Mack? Mack… wake up…” he whispered, hoping to stir her without startling her. The last thing he wanted was a slap in the face, which was what he got when he woke up his one dorm mate during a bad dream.

Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
occ: It totally fine!
Sleep was always a good thing. It was just so relaxing and refreshing. Although sometime, when you took a nap, you would wake up somewhat groggy and that wasn't the most pleasant feeling. Sleep was also a good way to release some stress and forget about everything that was going on; however sometimes your daily life haunted you in dreams.
Mack was perfectly aware that it was past curfew. She was perfectly aware how odd it was of her to sleep in the hallway when she had a perfectly nice and comfortable bed for her in the dormatory. But Mack was tired now, so the floor was the next best option.
There was no reason for Mack to be tired. She was stressed in school, she wasn't really having friend or family problems, or anything else of the sort. The only thing that was dampening her spirit at the moment was the recurring dreams she had of train crash.
The fifth year tried her best not to think of those images. They just made her upset and unnerved her. She would grow more quiet and reserved than usual when she was reminded of them.
Mack was in the inbetween phase of falling asleep. She wasn't in deep sleep yet. It was the kind of sleep where when you awoke you didn't even realize you had fallen asleep. Mack liked that feeling. It was like having a power nap. Mack wasn't really a heavy sleeper, she was just normal really. Little noises didn't bother her like some people and it wasn't too hard to wake her.
It didn't take too long for Mack to be awoken from her faint sleep. She was slightly confused when she felt shaking on her. She cracked an eye open, but the figure in front of her was blurry so she closed her eyes again. She then heard a male voice saying “Mack? Mack… wake up…”
Okay so this person had to know her at least somewhat well. Mack groaned and turned to the other side, facing away from the guy. But it was no use, no more sleeping for her. Groaning she flipped back around and slowly opened her eyes. She blinked a couple times, letting her eyes focus.
As the face came clear Mack saw that it was a Prefect. Oh great she thought. Then she realized it was Mark. He was one of the few people that Mack could stand. Pushing herself off the floor with her hand she sat up, rubbing her eyes.
"Why?" She said in a sleepy voice. "Did you wake me up? " Mack wasn't the best person to get along with especially when she first woke up. It was amazing how a groggy person could be rude when they first woke up.

Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
Mark should’ve known better to wake up a girl while she was sleeping, but the only alternative would have been allowing her to stay there until a less kind Prefect, Head, or even Professor wandered by, and if it was anybody other than himself then there was always the possibility of Mack looking points for her house or getting into trouble. As much as she may not have wanted to wake up, he knew that it was probably best for both of them if he was the one to stir her from her sleep.
He braced himself as Mack stirred where she was, opening her eyes a little. He was half-expecting to get yelled at, but she just turned over and faced away from him. Great, he thought to himself, just great, she was ignoring him! This wasn’t going to get him very far. It was times like this that he wondered why he was even a Prefect in the first place. He hated people telling him what to do, so what made him think that he had any right to tell others what they should do? None, though that was what he was doing now, wasn’t it?
Reminding himself that he was only doing his job, and perhaps saving Mack from getting caught breaking curfew, he waited patiently until she gave up on sleeping again. Mack turned back around to face him, and pushed herself up off of the ground and into a sitting position. Well, it was better than nothing, he supposed, but just thinking of sleep made Mark yawn just a little. What time was it now, anyway? He had been nearing the end of his rounds, and hadn’t really been keeping track of the time. It was then that Mack spoke.
"Why?" She said in a sleepy voice. "Did you wake me up? " Mark grimaced a little, wondering what he’d gotten himself into. Letting his hesitation pass, however, he greeted Mack’s aggravated comment with a surprisingly awake smile. “Nice to see you too, Sleeping Beauty.” Wondering if Mack would get the muggle reference or not, as he wasn’t particularly sure of her background, he didn’t really wait for a reply before continuing. “I decided that it was probably best for me to find you here, opposed to, oh, say, the Headmaster.” Mark shrugged, not quite sure what else to say. He woke her up because it was past curfew, and he couldn’t just leave her sleeping there! Surely she understood that much, however, and telling her that would only get him another snide remark. Tired people hated it when you stated the obvious.
Wondering if perhaps this whole idea had been doomed from the start, Mark was debating just leaving her there. If she didn’t want to be moved then there was nothing he could do about it, but another part of him really didn’t mind the trouble. In reality, doing rounds at night was dreadfully boring, and coming across someone you knew was a welcomed change. He wouldn’t have minded turning this into a conversation, though he doubted that Mack wanted to do anything other than sleep.
Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
Mack knew it was stupid to be sleeping the corridor. First of all it was freezing out there, second of all it was extremely uncomfortable and third of all, she was bound to get caught. Of course getting caught was the least of her worries. Being out past curfew wasn't a big deal to her so she didn't really mind being caught.
Although Mack really did consider sleeping out in the hallway, even through the cold and being uncomfortable. Those things were often forgotten when you were as tired as Mack. All she wanted to do was crash. Crashing just felt so good to Mack. She hated laying in bed for hours trying to fall asleep although that was the more healthy approach.
“Nice to see you too, Sleeping Beauty.”
Mack couldn't be mad at Mark, which was a first for Mack. Her and Mark just got along, it was strange but it was true. She tolerated him and he tolerated her so it just worked out well for the both of them. Mack gave Mark a sleepy grin in return and a sleepy eye with her fist, yawning when she was done.
Sleepy, yes but Mack didn't know about the beauty part. She was definantly not feeling like a princess at the moment. But whatever floated Mark's boat was fine with her.
“I decided that it was probably best for me to find you here, opposed to, oh, say, the Headmaster.”
Mack raised an eyebrow but then couldn't help but nod in agreement. "Don't think I would of gotten the same awakeing with those other choices" She replied wryly. "And for that I thank you." Mack yawned at the end of the sentence. Waking up after a short, well nap was more what Mack got, also made her groggy. She hated that feeling.
"Prefect duties I presume?" She asked him, as she tried her best to wake up completely. She tended to stumble when she first woke up and so she wanted to be fully awake before she tried any walking. It would be just her luck to come across a professor in that state and be taken for drunk. She would definantly not get to her bed when she wanted to if that happened.

Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
After the Sleeping Beauty comment, Mark wasn’t quite sure what reaction he was expecting. Mostly he was waiting for her to simply get up and walk away, upset with him for waking her like this. He couldn’t blame her, everyone was grumpy when they were prematurely woken up, and she couldn’t have been asleep for longer than an hour, maximum, probably a lot less.
Instead of some snide, agitated verbal attack, Mark was pleasantly surprised when all Mack did was give him a tired looking grin and rub at her eyes. Hmmm, perhaps this wouldn’t be as bad as he had first thought. This was followed by a yawn from Mack, which made Mark yawn himself. He tried to stifle it, but failed miserably. Yawns were definitely contagious.
"Don't think I would of gotten the same awakening with those other choices" She replied wryly. "And for that I thank you."
Mark laughed a little at the thanks. “Oh, it was nothing, just doing my job ma’am,” he joked, bowing slightly in jest. He was a little tired himself, and so he wasn’t thinking properly and words were just coming from his mouth. He hoped desperately that he wouldn’t say anything stupid without thinking, because he had a horrible tendency to do that late at night. “But you’re welcome anyway.” Mack had yawned again, and Mark ended up yawning again too. “Stop that, you’re making me tired,” he complained, but wasn’t really serious. He was going to be tired one way or another, with or without the contagious yawn.
"Prefect duties I presume?"
“Unfortunately. The hours are long, and the pay is bad, but hey, somebody’s got to do it.” As much as Mark joked about the position, he actually enjoyed the sense of responsibility and purpose that it gave him. It gave him something to do when he was bored, and he didn’t mind helping people out every now and then. “Just making my rounds when I came across you here, but don’t worry, I don’t think anybody else runs through here unless the caretaker decides to do a sweep of the castle.” He shrugged, not really minding. Being a Prefect, Mark could officially cover for the two of them if anyone were to happen upon them chatting in the hallway while Mack tried to wake up. She hadn’t attempted to walk yet, and Mark wondered if she would just end up falling asleep out here again. When you’re tired, you’re tired, after all.
“How about you? What brings you out this way to set up camp for the night? I’m guessing you fell asleep before curfew, or else I’d ask what made you decide to wander about this late.”

Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
Mack usually wasn't one to fall asleep in the middle of the hallway. If she was caught by a large group of people than she would undoubtably be the center of attention, something that she desperatley tried to avoid. If it wasn't for the fact that she was so tired Mack would be in her bed asleep right now, but she just was too tired to walk to the Ravenclaw part of the castle.
It was a good thing, however, that she was found by Mark. If it had been someone else no doubt she would of gotten detention. Then her parents would be notified and they would send her an howler, which would draw more attention to her. And then her brother would be drug into it and he would start pestering her. She would the get into a fight with him and probably land herself another detention. The whole process would start again. It was a vicious cycle that Mack had been thrown into many times before.
“Unfortunately. The hours are long, and the pay is bad, but hey, somebody’s got to do it.”
"And that 'somebody' most definantly will never be me. Thank goodness for 'somebodies' like you" Mack replied with a shake of the head. She would never be made Prefect, she would never want it. That would mean she would actually have to care about something.
“Just making my rounds when I came across you here, but don’t worry, I don’t think anybody else runs through here unless the caretaker decides to do a sweep of the castle.”
"Well aren't we lucky" Mack said, her tone of voice returning to its lifeless sound quickly, as she started to push her self up off of the ground. She pushed herself, her hands pushing along the wall behind her. Once up she was a little dizzy, which was normal for sudden, quick movement like that.
Relaxing against the wall, Mack closed her eyes, her arms hanging down, her hands pressured against the wall. She was so tired, but didn't want to move. She knew she should just go to common room as quickly as she could, that way she could get some proper sleep. But no, like always Mack had to be difficult.
“How about you? What brings you out this way to set up camp for the night? I’m guessing you fell asleep before curfew, or else I’d ask what made you decide to wander about this late.”
Silent for a while, taking in the silence of the castle, Mack stayed leaning against the wall with her eyes closed. The castle was dead silent. She loved that sound. The fifth year Ravenclaw felt as though she were the only one in the castle, in the whole world even. It was just her and the contuance solitude that surrounded her.
But she wasn't completely out of it. She heard the question and decided to answer, as much as she didn't want to. "Bingo" She said, her eyes closed but yet a finger was pointed directly at Mark. She did fall asleep after curfew. A few minutes quiet before she breathed out a little more quietly, "I was studying in the library and guess I just took my time getting back to the common room" she started. If taking her time meant knowingly taking the longest route than she was telling the truth.
"I got tired and just sank to the floor. When your as tired as I am your not going to argue with your body. That's just a losing battle." Mack turned slightly so that he right side was against the corridor wall, she looked at Mark with a lazy eye and asked, "Don't you ever get so sick of "Prefect patrol" that you just don't want to do it. I guess that's why they never are going to make me a Prefect. I don't got the right attitude." She paused and then added, "Well that and they know that no good would come out of it. Mind you I would just chuck the badge at them laughing if they ever attempted it. Its just not my thing."

Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)“And that 'somebody' most definitely will never be me. Thank goodness for 'somebodies' like you"
This statement caused Mark to laugh. He heard that a lot from people who considered him more of a lackey to the Professors because of the tasks he undertook as a Prefect. Others commented that Prefects only took the jobs to suck up and get better grades. This was the complete opposite of Mark, who only tried in two out of all of his classes and never took notes, even in the classes he cared about. Mark wasn’t much of a school person, studying wasn’t really his thing, and he didn’t mind it one bit so long as he grew up to be a photographer.
"Well aren't we lucky"
“Yeah, I guess.” Mark watched with great interest as she tried to stand up. He was about to offer to help her up when she made a quick, sudden movement, which ended with her leaning up against the wall for support. He wondered if she was very dizzy… she seemed a little out of it still, though her voice had returned to the way it sounded every day. He waited a second, but she didn’t make a move or a sound.
“Are you alright?” He was more than willing to help her make it back to the common room if she was still too tired to do it on her own, or even just walk back with her when she wanted to go, but at the same time he knew better than to ask. Mack was a pretty independent person from what time he’d spent around her in classes and such, and he thought that she might take offence to his offer of help. He decided it would be smarter to just wait and see what she said.
"Bingo. I was studying in the library and guess I just took my time getting back to the common room"
Well, she was coherent enough to answer his question, which was good. She was simply a little drained, that was all. “Studying… who does that anymore?” Mark joked, laughing a little. It was common knowledge among his peers that Mark did almost negative studying throughout the year, and so he assumed that Mack had picked up on that as well. Then again, Mack was better than him in most if not all of their classes, so…
"I got tired and just sank to the floor. When your as tired as I am your not going to argue with your body. That's just a losing battle."
“Good point,” Mark agreed. “I mean, I’ve never fallen asleep out in the halls, but I’ve been tempted to plenty of times during my rounds at night. I guess it’s a good thing that I’m used to staying up late, or else doing these rounds would be ten times more boring than they already are… unless it’s a good night, and I happen to come across something interesting like a girl passed out in the corridor,” Mark added, with a wink.
"Don't you ever get so sick of "Prefect patrol" that you just don't want to do it. I guess that's why they never are going to make me a Prefect. I don't got the right attitude." She paused and then added, "Well that and they know that no good would come out of it. Mind you I would just chuck the badge at them laughing if they ever attempted it. Its just not my thing."
Mark shrugged a little, pondering over his answer. He hadn’t really thought about it like that before. Of course there had been times when he’d rather been able to fall right asleep like all of the other students, but he’d never really considered it an attitude thing like Mack did. He wondered if he might’ve only gotten the position because nobody else had wanted it!
“Sometimes. I mean, some nights after a long day of classes and homework and stuff you just want to go up to your dorm room and crash, you know? Of course there are those times, but it’s just something I have to do. I mean, I agreed to it, right? And there’s no harm in missing a half an hour of sleep… sleep is so overrated anyway.” Mark didn’t try to turn everything into a joke, honestly, it just came out that way when he started holding a decent conversation. “I guess that’s why they picked me, because I was willing to do it. I mean, I’m not an exemplary student or anything, but I guess you could say that I’m dedicated.” He shrugged.
“Just not your thing, eh? So what is your thing, then? Or are you one of those well-rounded students who is good at everything?” Mark smiled, showing that the question was an innocent one and he wasn’t accusing her of being a perfectionist or anything. He was genuinely interested in what she considered her ‘thing’ to be…

Re: Just taking a nap (Feb. 12th)
If someone were to cross Mack and Mark's path right now they probably would of thought it strange. Here, two students who have opposite personalities, past curfew, just holding a conversation as though it were the middle of the day. It was all good for Mack though, she didn't really mind.
There was just something about Mark that made him bearable for Mack to speak with. Most students Mack just stayed away from, not bothering to make any sign of communications with them other than a scowl. No, Mark was an exception, a very rare exception.
Hearing Mark laugh didn't really do anything for Mack. Most girls loved making guys laugh, but to Mack it was nothing special. If he found her comments funny then so be it.
“Are you alright?”
Mack may have been tired and dizzy but she was still capable of sending a look of warning to Mark. She paused for a second, let the warning go and then position herself against the wall. Normally she would make some catty comment but it was Mark and she decided to cut him some slack. "Im fine, dizziness is only natural." She commented in a slight grumble.
It wasn't really the fact that he had asked the question, although most of the time it was, but it was the fact that Mark cared if Mack was alright. It slightly unnerved her, not many people really cared about Mack's well being and she didn't care about there's; it was a win-win situation.
“Studying… who does that anymore?”
Mack gave the prefect a weak grin, that was all that she could muster at the moment. "Not me" She decided out loud. Mack was a pretty bright girl but studying was still needed on her part in order to make the good grades. She didn't really care about grades but if getting fairly decent marks kept her brother and parents at bay then it was worth it.
“Good point,” Mark agreed. “I mean, I’ve never fallen asleep out in the halls, but I’ve been tempted to plenty of times during my rounds at night. Shoot if Mack were a Prefect she would most definantly be tempted to fall asleep on duty. But then again, that would just be giving up the chance to wander the halls after curfew...legally. That was probably just a perk to the job.
"I guess it’s a good thing that I’m used to staying up late, or else doing these rounds would be ten times more boring than they already are… unless it’s a good night, and I happen to come across something interesting like a girl passed out in the corridor,”
It was the wink that caught Mack off guard, she hadn't been expecting anything like that from Mark. Winking was usually a sign of flirting, and that were the case than that was definantly a development in the pairs relationship. But then again the wink did throw her off guard and it now appeared that she was jumping to irrational conclusions.
"Good night eh?? Intersting eh??" She responded with a slight sliver of a smirk. "Well im glad that I was able to add some excitement to your night." Oh excitement, if that was what this was than Mack's social life had definantly gone downhill. Not that she wasn't enjoying herself, she was, it just wasn't the kind of excitment she was use to.
"Are things always this exciting for you during patrol??" She asked him, raising an elegant eyebrow.
