Do you slot a flat ended screw driver down where it seems to join and twist forcing them apart ? Also the headlight globes - by the looks of things you don't have to remove the grill like on the KZN130 - is this right ? PS. Rego is due & I have to replace these two globes. Gill is correct for headlight the batterys are the best bet as you will break the clips on removel of the grill See my surf here beddo Centurion Posts: 163 (5/21/03 8:11:55 pm ) 203.80.162.11 Reply | Edit | Del Re: KZN185 Parker light replacement & headlight - how ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yep it looks like the you can get to the headlights from behind - on the pre 95 models (before KZN185 shape) you had to take out the grill. Adam are you talking about the KZN130 or the 185 as they are totally different as the 185 is more like a Prado setup in many ways - only seems to be one screw that is on the very top & screws downwards not sideways. I hate forcing something to come when I have missed a simple step like squeeze here and the thing will pop out. The headlights are easiest if you remove the battery/ies and the coolant bottle from the passenger side. I have relaced both of my headlight globes and did it with the battery in place. It was a tight squeeze but not too difficult. With the parkers I'm pretty sure there is only one screw and a spear. I've only done it once and that was a long time ago. Just undo the screw and pull - there will be some resistance as the spear pulls through a rubber grommet. This is the same as the tail lights, if you ever get around to changing that busted brake light! Simon

PSi Unregistered User (grommet) (11/30/02 9:24 pm ) 211.26.133.98 Reply | Edit | Del re: Timing Belt Light -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Les, I just found out today how to do it !!!! This will take a while so get a cuppa or something and sit back & relax. First step is to pull the instrument cluster out of the dash. This involves about 8 screws and a dozen or so clips. Then unplug the 3 wiring plugs at the back of the cluster. Once you have the cluster out remove the perspex cover (at all times after this is removed be very careful as the instruments & needles are very delicate). Now remove the 2 small screws on the speedo face. Once these are removed very very carefully pry off the speedo needle (be patient....it will come off!) Next remove the facia from the speedo and the clear plastic thingy underneath. Got it so far ? Now, on the 10s of thousands number counter ( the 6 in 60000 ), you will find a small gear and spring on an axle which drives a larger gear on the left hand side which is attached to a thing with numbers on it. This thing clicks over every 10 000 kays and when it reaches the right point a small cam on this thing activates a small stainless steel arm that then activates a micro switch. That is how it makes that annoying light come on! Now how to switch it off. Go back to the small gear with the spring. Slide the gear to one side and manually turn it by hand and the larger gear with the numbers on it should turn as well. Keep turning until you hear the little switch click. I think the number should probably read zero (In my excitement I didn't really pay too much attention to where it was). Now plug the cluster back in and start your car - the light should be gone. If it is still there you may have tuned it too far. If all is well put it all back together and Bobs your uncle. My Brother (a mechanic) and I did all this today by trial and error. If all else fails just remove the bloody lightglobe!! I hope this helps. regards PSi Simonsurf Registered User Posts: 1 (11/30/02 10:36 pm ) 211.26.133.98 Reply | Edit | Del Re: Timing Belt light on New Shape Surf 3.0 KZN185 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Top stuff PSi - You are an absolute champion!!!! On the back of the instrument cluster there are apparently 2 screw holes close together, one has a screw in it the other does not, apparently you just swap the screw from one hole to the other and thats it job done. I will try to find out exactly where the screw holes are and let you know. He found this out by ringing the local Toyota dealer and asking nicely. My mechanic said the same with my '98 surf when he did the timing belt. Imagine his surprise when he did this and it didn't work. But how so he said, this is the same on several of their vehicles (he used to be a Toyota mechanic!). He even took it all down to the local Toyota dealer who couldn't even work out what the story was (no surprise there). So, out came the light! Cheers, Troy. Reversed back out after lunch and felt a "clunk". Odometer (not the Speed indicator) has now stopped. Any advice on part number/ replacement probs / difficulty etc. Shane Brisbane KZN185 dandownunder Centurion Posts: 461 (7/1/03 6:03 am ) 144.138.75.69 Reply | Edit | Del Re: KZN185 - Odometer Replacement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shane, a little while after getting out surf we went 4wheel driving and the odometer stopped ! (probably something to do with it being tampered with) so i got a drawing pin, streched this out. then stuck it through the dash hole where you can reset the 100,00km light and just managed to reach the odometer, and push it slightly and it clicked to the next km, from memory i think it was stuck on something like 88,999 so it just needed a hand ? Not sure if the KZN185 has this hole though, so may prove a bit tricky ? I was told it could be the winding mechanicm wich would cost an arm and a leg from Toyota, seems off that yours has stopped after that litte reversing you did ? maybe check around your gears/transfer case for loose connections ? was there much 4wd up on the trip ? cheers Dan. _____________ 1992 SSR-X 2.4 2.5" exhaust 4" Lift 33" M/T and lots more.... www.dandownunder.motorpage.com ---------- Brisbane Just Cruzin Here to Help Posts: 693 (7/1/03 5:28 pm ) 210.49.117.132 Reply | Edit | Del Re: KZN185 - Odometer Cable Replacement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Dan, Thanx for the info, but there is no small hole on the 185s dash facia. There are heaps of 4wd tracks up in the border ranges but we couldn't see them all. Did a bit around Mt Edwards and also Mt Alford. Very slippery after the recent rains, so couldn't venture into the extreme areas that you like to frequent.. I would suggest pulling out the instrument cluster and checking all the screws at the rear of the unit as they make contact with the printed circuit . The speedo and odometer will read correct even if you are going backwards!!!! sounds like something has come loose or worst case a dry solder, if the speedo is working the signal must be good .I think it is a small motor that drives the odometer (is the trip meter working ?) I think it uses the same motor. Good luck... I'll check all connections on the weekend. BTW where does the reading come from (transmission?) should I also check connections at the source or, the fact that the speedo is working, rules out that possibility? Shane Brisbane KZN185 christo400 Distinguished Site User (10posts+) Posts: 12 (7/3/03 8:52 am ) 139.134.58.153 Reply | Edit | Del odometer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shane , the speed sensor in the trans sends only one signal to the speedo head that rules out the trans side of things, if you need to remove the speedo unit from the instument cluster carefully remove the front perspex cover and only the screws at the rear of the speedo section and the speedo will come out. Possible that the little motor that drives the odometer isn't working. hope this isn't the case. I suggest if you can't find anything take it to a speedo repair specialist while its removed. Usually its a poor solder or loose connection!! Ive fixed many of these problems working in a dealership mainly VW rubbish. Good luck and take your time. There are four mounting screws on the reverse side behind the meters (there are also 2 more off to one side). I got a few other speedo head units (Thanx to Russ @ Whites4WD and Maurice @ All State Autos) for parts to be used by Brisbane Car & Truck Instruments. Placement of the Ground and Ignition mounting screws are critical, ie they must be the same as what was originally in my speedo unit. The 98 Prado head has them switched over. (could not use) The LN130 was the same as mine The VZN185 was the same as mine (note: cannot use petrol "tacho parts" in diesel speedo head but everything else ok) Speedo heads range from $150 to $220. Brisbane Car & Truck Instruments replaced the item in 2 hours for $50. (original quote was $93.50 which included reapir of speedo) Shane - Brisbane KZN185 BradL Registered User Posts: 6 (9/1/03 8:21 am ) 202.14.22.3 Reply | Edit | Del Speedo Connection -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where exactly is the plug for the speedo connection on the transmission? chocyman Centurion Posts: 150 (9/1/03 8:38 pm ) 144.136.227.177 Reply | Edit | Del Re: KZN185 - Odometer / Tripmeter Replacement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey Shane. I had the exact same problem not long ago. I was driving along and suddenly the speedo needle just dropped!!I tried to fix the speedo (as like your the stepper motor behind the speedo had burn out) but really I think you`ll find youve done the best thing and replace it. I tried re-soldering the hair thin wires and all that, I even got it semi-working (it went from zero to sixty in 2 seconds!!..just didnt show much else in- between). Mine cost me $100 from an import place in perth, its got 80K on it, so Ive just documented it so the next owner (if there is one). Least its fixed, and by the sounds of things at not too bad-a-price either. If you need any help, just give me a shout. P.S the plugs for the speedo are located at the top of the instrument cluster. If you tilt the steering column down and undo all the damn screws, you can remove the instrument cluster and just reach behind it to depress the clips and the plugs come out. Electrical connection to the speedo itself is via screws and the electrical membrane behind the instrument cluster. As Shane has mentioned, the right holes and a good connection is important. Andrew
