Winch bar for '96 model on
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Would love to get a winch bar for my 96-97 surf. Apparently these new models have the same chassis/running gear/suspension as the Prado. Does anyone know if a Prado bar can be modified to suit ?

R.E winch bar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey PSI, I have head the same, but can't proove it. I would think they are similar, ask a local TJM or ARB person, they know their stuff, my local TJM place gets a lot of the 97's in.

Bullbar for the KZN185
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok the Prado does not fit - front of chassis is slightly different - there is one to fit though, it is a TJM bar and it is export only - the local TJM guys will not know anything about it. You have to call TJM at Brisbane. I got a big tube bar fitted (metal) - could have got alloy though you have to wait for a number of orders from the USA - I had one on order but after 3 mths no luck so bought a metal one they had in stock. You can also buy one that is for Japan market that looks like the ARB type bars, but it is a TJM also. ARB do not make one to fit. Anyway I got my one painted and put a Premier winch in. The alloy you would have to get a winch harness also, Cheers Beddo

Winch bar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey PSI, the ARB Prado bar does fit the Surf/4Runner 185. Here in the US we've got 2 ARB bars that will fit the 185, the Tacoma pickup bar and the Prado bar. They are different sizes and fit differently. I'm not sure if the model years on US spec 185's coincide with those sold elsewhere. The Tacoma bar is a bit small and if the vehicle has those wide fender flares they will need to be trimmed to make this bar fit. The Prado bar is a bit too wide. I've got this bar on my 2000 4Runner. I personally like it and think it looks just fine. It bolts up exactly the same as on the Prado. Here in the US the 1999-2002 4Runners had a front bumper that sticks out farther than previous model years (96-9 . There is a steel plate welded to the front of each frame rail which needs to be cut off. I used a sawzall which took about 2 mintues per plate, very easy. The rest is cake! If you want to see pics let me know and I'll shoot some with the digital.

Bullbar 185
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeh the bloke from Tjm said that the front chassis had to be modified slightly to fit a Prado bar, but I didn't think it would be that quick. Anyway the metal bar I got fitted straight on & also with the flares the bullbar is slightly narrower - anyway looks good and Tjm have them in stock. You Yanks can also get them from Tjm in metal and alloy as these bars are just for the USA market. Contact in Brisbane Tjm head office is Bob Hilton.

Bullbar 185
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My friends got a TJM on his Tacoma pickup. I've never actually seen one on a 185 over here. TJM's are few and far between in the US. In fact they actually quit sending them over here for awhile, though I'm not sure why. ARB however is well established here and sell numerous products. Many previous sellers of TJM switched to ARB after they stopped shipping. I've been told that the steel plates on the end of each frame rail still needs to be cut off on 99-02 185's in order to fit the TJM bar. If it doesn't rain all weekend I'll snap some pics of my ARB Prado bar on my truck.

Tjm Bullbar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thats interesting, yeh I don't know the situ on later Surfs, I was told that the Prado would fit but as you have mentioned needed some mods to the front of the chassis and some filling of gaps behind the bar. Anyway I chased and chased info - ARB said no way to me here in Oz & Tjm came to the party, sounds like Tjm have lost a few customers in the US. Had looked at fitting ARB & Tjm Prado bars & was told because of the airbags I would have insurance problems, as the bar was not built for the Surf - so I kept on researching until Tjm told me about the export bar.

All right guys. I sent the photos of my ARB Prado bar on my US spec 185 to Adam who was nice enough to post them on here for everyone to see. They are under the "ARB Prado bar pic".

Bar for 96 Surf
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have re-searched this with the same results.
Bob Hilton TJM haed off advised that I could add my name to the Overseas order list and when when appropriate numbers were received from OS and within OZ they would do a manufacturing run.
I also checked with BOCAR. They make a bar that fits the 185 with small modification to the mounting brackets on the bar..Not on the vehicle. Mine has twin air bags and this was advised to all companies that I spoke to.

BOCAR bullbar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the bar will be passed as air bag compatible ? Tjm at the time were the only ones that said there's would - anyway Bocar bars look good - but I'm happy with mine.

Re: Winch bar for '96 model on
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G'day,

I've got a Bocar alloy bullbar on the front of my '98 Surf. It's airbag compatible, however, I've been told that you can't put a winch in it. Not sure the reasons why you can't, although it may require a brace and winch cradle installed to hold the winch.

Would appreciate it if anybody could shed some light on this.

Cheers, Troy.

Alloy bars do need a cradle to hold winch
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep - the alloys need a metal cradle to hold the weight - that's why I went a metal bar as they are strong enough - the weight of the alloy bar and cradle equal almost that of the metal bar - though the alloy bars look real good (I'm lazy & did not want to polish it to keep the shine).

Re: KZN185 bullbar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G'day Chris,
There are a couple of choices available to you. TJM make both alloy and steel bullbars for the 185. The steel one is a winch bar but the alloy (which is very hard to get) does not support a winch without a cradle. These are export only (to the U.S) and you need to ring TJM head office in Brissie to get the part number and then order it through your local TJM dealer.
The other option is a Bocar alloy bullbar which does not support a winch.
All of these bars are airbag compatible.

There was a lot of discussion about these somewhere but I'm buggered if I can find it!
I have the TJM steel winchbar and am very happy with it.

Re: KZN185 bullbar

Hi Christo400
I have had a recent discussion with Kroozerone from this site about his Prado Nudge bar which bolted straight on to his KZN185. You would think, if this was the case, that a Prado bullbar would also bolt straight on. (I suppose it is a question of which year Prado fits which year Surf, maybe slight variances)
May be worth asking the right questions and having a "technician" to have a look at your front end.
It could be that simple, if you do find out anything could you please report it back here.
I'm looking for something to place spot lights on, and if the bull bar is in close proximity to a nudge bar (correct fitting and around same dollars in comparison) then I would go after a second hand Prado bull bar.

Re: KZN185 bullbar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey chaps,
With the Prado the chassis is the same apart from some very minor differences around the leading edge of the rails. This leading edge needs to be cut off in order to fit a full bullbar. Fitting a Prado nudge bar is too easy for words but the bullbar is a different story. The nudge bar is only held on by four bolts, the lowest ones on the chassis rails where the towhook is connected, and the bullbar brackets are held on by ten bolts - the four lower ones, four where the bumper bar is mounted and four on the front edge of the rails.
Whichever way you decide to go, make sure the bar is airbag compatible.
Maybe you could get a second hand Prado bullbar from somewhere and the mounting kit from TJM? Who knows?

bull bar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Guys,
its good to know that there is a bar to suit,
the TJM one sounds expensive? I might pull off the
bumper and go around to the bullbar manufacture
and see what fits. Don't know when I will have time for this (or money) maybe the wrecker will have a prado bar
think most of the prado's have air bag, can't see a prob
if they mount in the same spot and the sensor is mounted similar. Let me know if you hear of a cheap alternative . p.s don't nec need a winch bar. Was looking at portable winches that can fit front or rear!!
Thanks Chris..

KZN185 towing specs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could anyone please tell me where I can find out the towing specs (tare and static ball weight) for the KZN185 Surf?

KZN185 towing capacity
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My 185 Tare weight is 1880 & GVM is 2520. Towing capacioty was mentioned earlier in discussion on the old site - though I believe you can tow 80% of your Tare weight - check with RTA. Hope this is helpful.

Re: KZN185 towing specs

I don't know if this helps but the maximum towing rates are 750kg unbraked and 2500kg braked. My local Toyota dealer looked it up on the Jap Toyota web site.

Re: KZN185 towing specs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My 185 has a "Towmaster" Prado tow bar (2,250 ks and ball weight of 225 ks) There is a general concensus amongst Caravan salesmen (x4) that the Surf can only tow 1,500 kilos with a ball weight of 150 kilos.

All very nice except nobody can show me where any regulatory body also agrees with this or would also approve an increase in both applicable weights if appropriate engineering were to take place ie an authorised upgrade of suspension and the like.

Re: KZN185 towing specs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The towbar on my 185 is of unknown origin and is stamped with lots of Japanese writing and the figures 250 & 2500. I do know for a fact that the Aussie spec Prados towing capacity is 2500kg (braked) with a max ball weight of 250kg so I am assuming (and have been told) that the same applies for the 185 which has the same chassis and running gear as the Prado. But just to be safe don't overtow your car. Just thought of something else. The max towing weight for a hilux is 1800kg. This includes twincabs, petrol, turbo diesel etc.. Maybe the caravan salesmen are thinking along the lines of the earlier 4runner type surfs.

Re: KZN185 towing specs

Hi Adam.

This may be a technical point but your surf doesn't appear to be a 185. According to my sources the older 4runner type surfs have a tow rating of 1800kg whereas the prado based 185 is 2500. The 185 weighs more than the 130. There is also a difference between a H/D reciever type hitch and a normal duty hitch.

Re: KZN185 towing specs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanx Adam,
It would seem that I have choice upto 2200 approx with an additional laden weight hitting 2,500 kgs.
This more than adequately caters for my current interest in caravans. (approx 1,300 to 1,700 kgs ie upto 15' pop top in a double bed setup) with an additional laden weight of 300 kgs bringing it up to 2,000 kgs max.
I guess that I just need to be sensible in choice and how it is packed.
