question about KZN185
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm planning to buy a Surf KZN185 and am researching on it before I buy.

One of the things I found out in the web is that there is a KZN185G and a KZN185W. I have been told that the KZN185G is a grand touring model.

Can anyone be kind to give me a detailed description or list of the differences between the two?
Thanks.

Re: question about KZN185

Well I have a KZN185W as the model on the compliance plate. It is a 97 SSRG model diesel intercooled (has the bonnet scoop) model and is auto. Fantastic car - been to Cape York and Kimberley's and can mechanic problems except for a leaking axle seal on rear. Very happy with it as I had a 95 model and this one is much improved. Panels with the new shape - well I have checked around the place for panels and they are available - numerous half cuts coming into country.
Cheers Jeff
PS. upward lifting tail gate is a benefit when it is raining !
PPS. I think around 96 there was a model that had the same suspension as the 95 model (torsion bar setup) - not sure about this but that could be the other model ???

Hi!

Was the steering of your '95 model rack&pinion? do all '95 models, including the ssr-g, come with torsion bar setup?

Thanks.

Roy

Hi,
I sent an email to HSOC Japan and they replied that the KZN185W body is wider by about 110 mm than the KZN185G.

other than a pressure test , what other tests should i do to check the surf
what are the differences to all the models

ssr
ssr-g.
ssr-x

are they just small interior differences?

well you have all convinced me on a 3L, but wanted to spend around the $18000 mark ...and me want a sun roof

I like touring ..and driving heaps...and wouldnt do any real extreme 4wdriving..

The 1996 KZN185 SSR-X does not have a sunroof.
That way I don't have to wear a hat when I'm driving...

G'Day Tuckerbox
I have a 3lt ssrx limited, this comes with a sun roof and it's just fab Mind you, some sunscreen is handy when driving up north. Wouldn't mind a convertible surf, now that's an idea . It has rear spoiler (with brake light) wind guards on all windows, nudge bar etc. A lot of electrics but not all I think. As said before SSRG is top of range and the models have less features the further you go down the list.

LSD stands for limited slip differential (something like that) as for exactly what it does, I'll let someone more technical describe it to you but I think it acts as a distributer of power to the wheels. If one wheel looses traction, some of the power is transferred to the other wheel???? It's not a diff lock but a variation to it.
As for tests, well as many as you can do. Try the 4wd mode, listen for any unusual noises, check the oil for contaminants, cleanliness and any signs of being burnt. drive in circles at full lock, soft suspension, If the car has decals all over it, it probably has been touched up here. Check doors, sunroof for rust (or signs of) check tyres for unusual wear, check brakes etc etc etc.
Oh yes check for excessive smoke from the exhaust and the colour. Surfs have a reputation of smoking a bit.

Most of all get it checked out by a professional of your choice, money well spent.

Hi tuckerbox

Here is a link that will explain how diffs work -auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm - This is part of a site called How Stuff Works -www.howstuffworks.com/ - which explains the basic operation of many things.Great site for info on all sorts of stuff.

Shop around and when you find one you like have an independant inspection done.I always check the vehicle myself and then if I am satisfied have it put up on a hoist and let a mechanic do a thorough check.Don't get the dealers mate to do this. When I purchased my 2.4 the dealers mate was charging $100.00 and I had it done myself for $60.00.

Hi Tucker box,
I've just bought a 3.0 litre Surf SSR-X for the beloved wife, its the best car I have ever bought. It looks like she's going to be riding my Honda until I get bored with it. Seriously, Its a great car, I got it in Melbourne through a private sale for $16500 I need to do a couple of minor modifications to it because me and the wife are going to do a bit of off road site seeing while we are in Victoria. Like I said I love it, its the best car I've bought ever, I can't recommend it enough, well until it breaksdown.

I do recommend taking some one who knows a bit about Surfs and 4WD's before you buy.
Happy Surfing,
Wes Down Under.

Hey Wizzer, my VZN185 (V6) SSR-G has an open diff(not LSD).
Are you sure its supposed to have LSD?
I heard something about vehicles with ABS usually have open diffs and the ABS slows the spinning wheel down when it starts to slip.

Anyone know some more about this?

Re: hi guys

What your'e talking about Ray is "traction control". This, as you said, works by applying brake pressure to the spinning wheels which allows torque to be sent the non spinning wheels. You can get an LSD with ABS but many of the later models (185) did not have one as standard - something to do wth Japs not going off road much I think. The Yank version of the 185, the 4runner, actually came with an optional electric locker which would be pretty awesome. In a lot of expert's opinion the standard Toyota LSD isn't much good after about 40 000 k's anyway.

I have an SSR-G without a sunroof or Recaro's , it has a LSD and ABS and also an intercooler , so I'm sure that most of these things were options when they were specified new .
