Kaniliel Hymnwood -- Herbology Professor
OOC
Email Address: cokethepepsislayer@hotmail.com
Your Name: Melana
Code: Rita Skeeter
IC
Full Name: Kaniliel Hymnwood
Nickname(s): Kani (for fellow professors and close friends only)
DOB: February 21st, 1974
Blood Type: Pureblood
Previous School/House: In her first school years, she attended Hogwarts in Gryffindor before escaping to Beaux-Bâtons.
Subject To Teach: Herbology
Qualifications:
As an adolescent, Kaniliel had always been the top student in Herbology. Despite the common belief that the subject is rather dull, she has found ways in order to spice it up. Literally. As an adult she followed wizard historians around the world on their expeditions. While they were exploring ancient tombs and working on the old curses, she was discovering new species of flora; including the Saulus Kanilius to which she gave her name, a plant that will shed tears whenever approached.
Kaniliel submitted many research articles to scholarly journals, most of which have been published. She has also written a few school manuals in French and is currently working on having them translated into English.
She has given many gardening workshops for children, and thus has developed social skills with children as well as good teaching skills.
Physical Appearance:
Without a doubt, Kaniliel's most striking physical trait is her eyes. Their watery aquamarine hue changes frequently from sapphire blue, to sky blue, to grey, back to aquamarine, then to grass green, and sometimes reaches a dark emerald green. Some say the colour changes with her mood, others say it depends on what she wears. Only Kaniliel knows the true story behind their cameleon-like behaviour: she had been working with a Camel Cactus, a venomous plant that spits its poison. The venom had gotten into her eyes and she needed the antidote within the following minutes or she would have become blind. Luckily it was at hand, but the side-effects made her eye colour seem bewitched, which technically they now were.
Her long wavy fiery auburn hair also attracts attention, but does not seem to hold any magical aspect to it. It's just nice, and contrasts her eyes nicely most of the time, depending on the colour.
After years of working with plants, some extremely dangerous and poisonous, it is to be expected to have a few marks etched upon one's body. Kaniliel is no exception. She has built a rather impressive collection of scars and old wounds, most of which are gathered near her abdomen and her chest.
In general, Kaniliel is a very pleasant-looking woman with a sunny disposition. Her 5”8 height makes her taller than the average witch, but still shorter than most wizards. Though she is not very athletic, her waistline is surprisingly slim.
Personality:
Kaniliel is a good-humoured person who loves to laugh. She will never put a student in detention nor will she lecture a student for bad conduct. The reason for this is that she never had to; her students have such a great time in her class that they are all well-behaved.
It is with the adults that she has a problem. Especially men. A fervent feminist, Kaniliel cannot stand to take orders from a man. She will even be rude and openly mean with men at times, if she does not manage to keep her mouth shut. Usually she tries to stay surrounded by women to avoid having to show her ugly side.
Kaniliel is unmarried, not only because of her general hate for men, but also because most men are simply horrified by the state of her hands.
History:
Kaniliel grew up in a pure wizarding family which was once allied to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. She never developed an interest for serving the Dark Arts, and so she was unofficially shunned from her family as an ugly duckling. Without the ability to relate to her relatives, it made the events that were about to unfold a lot easier on Kaniliel.
Witnessing what was happening to her parents who were loyal followers of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, she decided to flee to France to hide from the evil forces. Her parents had tried to bring her to the dark side to serve Him by their side, but she wouldn't have it. She stuck to her principles without fail, which eventually discouraged her family to the point of no return. They kept wishing for her to be sorted into Slytherin House, where most of the Hymnwood Family and their allies had been, but the wise ragged hat put her in Ravenclaw where she fit in perfectly. Her parents complained to the Headmaster, but he calmly explained to them that once a student is sorted into a House, the decision cannot be revoked. Further feudings and chaos ensued within her household, and the fourteen year-old Kaniliel took her broom and illegally flew to Beaux-Bâtons where she was welcomed with open arms and could pursue her studies. She was a bit saddened at the thought of leaving, since she had managed to enter Professor Slughorn's 'Slug Club' through not only her extensively impressive family lineage (though had that been the only reason, Kaniliel would've resented the club entirely) but also through her amazing Herbology skills.
Though she was highly successful in Herbology and Potions, her weak points were Divination, Ancient Runes and Defence Against the Dark Arts. Her extensive difficulty in the latter subject was so pronounced that it almost prevented her from graduating. The Council decided to pass her anyway, considering her high marks in almost every other subject. By studying at Beaux-Bâtons she also became fluent in French. She enjoyed Quidditch, but never played. She held an unrelenting fascination for dueling, but no one has ever seen her challenge anyone. Kaniliel kept quiet during her school years, observing others rather than being part of the social action. She had had a few sparse crushes on the occasional Parisian boy, but they considered her as much as the surrounding wallpaper. The resentment eventually grew into her full-fledged disdain for men as an adult.
Once she graduated, Kaniliel moved on to higher studies in Herbology and Potions. Her expertise allowed her to participate in many research excursions in remote areas. It was during one of those said excursions that she discovered the Saulus Kanilius, a new species of plantlife to which she gave her name. That discovery boosted her self-esteem to a point where she was no longer content with being only an observer. She was finally ready to take her place in the world and forge herself a decent social life. Kaniliel stepped out, and eventually channeled her newfound extrovertedness into teaching Herbology. She first started at Beaux-Batons because the surroundings felt safe, but where she really wanted to be was at Hogwarts. Word was going around that Professor Sprout was retiring and that a new Herbology professor was wanted. And this is where Kaniliel’s real story begins.
Sample RP:
With no answer to her questions to the hallway devoid of any palpable presence, Kaniliel sighed. It felt like a classroom again, talking to the walls like that. She smiled at her own joke. "I'll go find Darrick then," she said to no one in particular. With an uncertain spring in her step, she hurried to the main entrance where he had gone. Already she missed him and wanted to be held in his arms. The shock of his being a Liche had worn off long ago; for some reason, loving an undead creature didn't seem so revolting to her.
The air outside was humid, and there was a light mist covering the ground. Kaniliel suddenly realized that she looked utterly ridiculous in her orchid costume. She pulled out her wand and promptly exchanged her costume for her preferred beige linen robes. She lined the castle walls, not wanting to stray too far from the building. Once she turned the corner, her foot hit something sharp that cut through her skin. "Ow! What the- Merlin!" Darius' sword was the culprit. "Darius! Darius are you out here?"
Meanwhile, Timerus Husk had been busy spying on the young professor who so foolishly ventured out of the school's walls. He creeped up slowly upon her. Kaniliel turned abruptly to see a slow-moving figure advance upon her. In a moment of despair she called out, "Darrick! Are you alright, love? Darrick, are you hurt?" She took a few steps towards the shadowy form, squinting her eyes in the attempt to recognize her partner. A few moments passed in tortured suspence when suddenly Kaniliel gasped. The man - or rather, creature - before her was not Darrick at all. An ugly, disfigured man grinned impishly at her from under his cloak.
"I am not Darrick, my sweet. Perhaps he was the young man carrying a very large sword?" Completely spooked, Kaniliel simply shook her head in negation. "Ah, then it must have been that rather handsome young man that went up against the eldest witch among them. I'm afraid he was burned to a crisp, completely helpless, floating up over there. His ashes are long gone, my dear," the man continued in the same mocking tone.
His words hit Kaniliel like repeated slaps and blows. She felt her heart rip to shreds. It was as if she were surrounded by a group of dementors; she was convinced that she would never be happy again. Tears of anger and heartache welled up in her now indigo eyes. In a small voice, she managed to ask, "Who killed him? Tell me!"
"A former Death Eater. She goes by the name Camellia Hymnwood if that is any help." Kaniliel trembled with rage. Without cutting eye-contact with the creepy old man she slowly bent down and grabbed Darius' sword with both hands. With lightening speed and strength she had never known herself to have, Kaniliel swung the heavy sword and instantly beheaded Timerus Husk. His corpse collapsed to the ground in a bloody mess, splattering her once immaculate beige robes with a red and black oozing substance.
The strength left her as she planted the sword into the ground. Kaniliel managed to take a few steps away from the severed body before falling on her knees. She lowered her head as her shoulders shook with her violent sobs. Her tears now fell freely. "Aunt Camellia, you will pay for his death with your very life," she muttered. Kaniliel lifted her head so she could face the skies as she cried out to her lost love. "Darrick!! I will avenge you!"
