Code: Rita Skeeter, Illegal Animagus
IC
Name: Karyn Tate
Nickname(s): Karrie, Star Maiden
DOB: 21 October 1969
Blood: Half-Blood
Previous School/House: Ravenclaw, Hogwarts
Subject To Teach: Astronomy
Qualifications: Other than being an avid enthusiast about Astronomy since her youth, Karyn Tate recieved an Outstanding OWL and NEWT in the field of Astronomy, and also trained further at Salem Witches Academy, an academy for witches that wish go into fields of astronomy. She was trained under one of the greatest Astronomers of the age, G.S. Sinistra.
Physical Appearance: Karyn Tate gives off a threatening demeanor, which is the exact opposite of who she is. Karyn has sharp, emerald colored eyes, framed by golden-rimmed bifocals, which she wears on a sliver chain around her slender neck. Karyn’s head is framed with strawberry blonde hair, which when left down, reaches down to her waist. Karyn often wears her hair in a bun, which sits at the back of her hair, and she often dons a black witches’ hat, which she buckles under her Chin., as to ensure that it does not fly away. She walks tall and proud, and she has decent posture, and she walks in a brisk gait.
Karyn stands at an even six feet tall, and she weighs approximately 170 pounds. Karyn is rather thin, which can be attributed to a good combination of genetics and lifestyle. Karyn enjoys walking around the Hogwarts lawns, even though she cannot stay out very long, unless she uses a sun-blocking charm on her skin, as she burns quite easily.
Karyn has a rather pale complexion, which she says (jokingly) is from teaching at all hours of the night. Karyn doesn’t wear any makeup, including nail polish. Karyn strongly believes in keeping her nails neatly cut and kept, and she often uses a protein coat on her nails. She does she use magic to change her body in any way, as Karyn is rather proud of her body. Karyn does not disguise her one disfigurement, which is a small scar on her forehead, obtained during a scuffle in her childhood. Luckily, this scar is not very noticeable, amid her heavily wrinkled brow.
Karyn’s wardrobe is home to a wide variety of outfits. For wearing at Hogwarts, Karyn has several sets of plain, black work robes, which she rather dislikes wearing. For a more laid-back look. Karyn has navy colored robes, which are flecked with stars that glow. For formal occasions, Karyn has two sets of dress robes, one set is golden colored, with a navy colored lace around the neck. The other set is silver colored, with a black lace edging. In her wardrobe, Karyn also has a few muggle outfits, for when she must go into the muggle world.
Karyn wears very little in the way of jewelry. Karyn wears a ring studded with silver and sapphire, which was her wedding ring. It is her physical reminder of her husband. Other than that ring, Karyn wears diamond-studded earrings, and a simple gold chain around her neck.
Personality: For Karyn, the stars have always had a mystical effect. Ever since she was a young child, Karyn has wanted to see beyond the veil of the world, and become immersed in the stars. For her, this meant coming back to Hogwarts to teach astronomy. Karyn is emotionally removed from everyone around her, and she feels that showing emotions are weakness. For example, when Karyn gets angry, she speaks slowly and coolly, rather than allowing her anger to show. Karyn has been like this since her husband died.
The death of her husband, Gregory Tate was a great blow to her. His death was like someone coming along and cutting out her heart and soul. Since his death, Karyn has become an extremely strict professor, and she has become more and more reclusive, hiding away on her free nights to scan the skies, taking her home in the solitude of her office. Even though Karyn wishes for nothing more than solitude, she considers it a duty of hers to return the education that was given to her, which is the only reason that she stays at Hogwarts as a professor.
Karyn expects a great deal from her students. She expects them to understand all of the astronomical concepts that she teaches, though she understands that some students do not enjoy the subject of Astronomy. Karyn really does not care if the students do not like her class, but she does uphold them to the standards that she holds the rest of the class to. Karyn’s lessons are usually focused on one individual body of space. For the younger students, Karyn starts out with easy subjects, such as the Moon and the Inner Planets, and her most advanced classes, the N.E.W.T classes, have more difficult subjects, such as Black Holes and Gravitational Theories.
Karyn is indifferent to whether students are being called names, unless it becomes serious. Otherwise, Karyn just ignores it. Karyn does not believe in the so-called “Pureblood Supremacy,” being born a half-blooded witch. The only thing that can get Karyn angry is having another student called a mudblood. In her opinion, that is the worst thing a person could be called, and it is something that she refuses to tolerate it. Karyn also has no problem with deducting or giving house points, when the need arises. Karyn is fair with the rules, but she is just, and she listens to both sides of an argument, before she makes a judgment.
Karyn has never supported the Lord Voldemort, and she will never be a large fan of the Dark Arts. Karyn also does not like the way that the Ministry of Magic is running the wizarding community, but she tolerates it. Harry Potter, even though he never was a big fan of her class, was something of an interest to Karyn. She believed, though sometimes halfheartedly, that The Boy Who Lived would end the second war.
Karyn is somewhat removed from the Hogwarts Staff. Karyn very rarely visits the staff room, as she takes a liking to her office in the Astronomy Tower. However, Karyn hasn’t taken to completely hiding herself away in her tower
History: Karyn Jacqueline Diano was born to Grace May Diano and Viggo Gray Diano on 21 October. Viggo Diano was a wizard, and Grace a Muggle. It was only after Karyn’s birth that she learned that her husband was a wizard. At that time, Grace took Karyn away from her father, and they removed to the Scottish Moors.
Karyn was raised as a muggle, because Grace felt that her daughter did not have any magical abilities. Grace’s one hope was that her daughter would never learn that a world other than the one that she lived in. After some time, Grace forced herself to forget that even such a world existed, and Karyn learned not to ask her mother about her father.
Karyn’s first memory was when she was five years old, she could remember sitting outside with her mother looking up at the stars. The two of them had stayed out all night, and her mother had pointed out what the different planets and stars were. Karyn never did forget that night… it was the event that sparked her interest in seeing what the planets held.
Karyn was always a bright student. Growing up in the Muggle School, she always had a passion for Science, and especially space travel. She would often write fantasies about her landing on the moon, and she would often fall into reveries about being able to travel in space, which made the other students think that she was mentally distraught, though Karyn did have her small group of friends. But that all changed, when she turned eleven years old. It was then, that her everything. About her father, her true heritage, and after the initial shock, she accepted that she was a witch… she had magical abilities. She was a witch, and she would be attending a magical academy in only one short year.
On 1 September, Karyn first arrived at Hogwarts School, as she rode across the dark lake outside of Hogwarts School, her eyes were craned up to the topmost towers, and she was imagining what she would be able to see from a telescope from the highest tower. Sure enough, she maintained a close relationship with the Astronomy Professor, Ginger Sinistra, who was also the head of Ravenclaw House at the time. Under Professor Sinistra, Karyn enjoyed learning the magical studies of the constellations.
Karyn’s best subjects were Astronomy, Ancient Runes and Transfiguration, and she did not like the subjects of Potions, nor Divination, though she did not have any personal problems with Horace Slughorn, the Potions Professor of her time, nor with Marjorie Delatorre, the Divination Professor at the time. Karyn simply found that both subjects were not worth her time.
Karyn did very well on her O.W.L.s. Karyn received an Outstanding in Astronomy and Ancient Runes, an Exceeds Expectations in Transfiguration and charms, and acceptable in Potions and History of Magic. Karyn’s poor subjects were Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and and Divination. She was very lucky to not achieve a Troll in those classes.
Karyn received nine N.E.W.T’s, with nothing under an ‘Acceptable’ grade. which allowed her to go to Salem Witches’ School, in the United States. Karyn had anticipated going to Salem because she wanted a change of environment and she wished to continue her studies in the field of Astronomy. SWA was the best place to continue her studies, as their Astronomy program was one of the best in the world. It was there that she met her husband-to-be, Gregory Tate, a fellow Brit. who was studying at Boston International School. They met when the Witches Academy took a trip to Boston, and they met in one of the shops on the Wizarding Strip, Langeore Lane. Karyn and Gregory hit it off instantly, and as soon as they finished four years of finishing school in the States, they returned to England and they began to date. Finally, the two were wed in Holy Matrimony on 25 May. They bought a house in Kent, and it was there that they settled down, and they had two children, Isaiah Damien Tate and Kymber Lynne Tate. Isaiah was the elder of the two by three years.
Only one year after her daughter graduated from Hogwarts, the unexpected happened: The Love of her life died. Gregory had been injured in an explosion at a friend’s house, when he had gone on a visit, and another member of the household, who was attempting to make a calming drought, when they made an incident, which caused the house to blow up. None in the house survived that incident.
Though Karyn’s daughter tried to cheer her up, it was to no avail. Karyn spent several years inside her house, refusing to speak to anybody, It was probably very well that she did this, as Voldemort was undergoing his second reign of power, and she had already been scarred by his first during her Hogwarts years.
Very slowly, Karyn started to overcome, and it was then that she decided to take on a job. Karyn decided that she wanted to teach, and Professor Sinistra had just retired, scared after the death of Albus Dumbledore (which had, of course, taken place right above the poor woman’s tower, and she could still remember seeing the old man’s corpse falling from the tower). Karyn took the job, to find herself right in the midst of the Second War. She fought in the battle of 16 April, though her appearance in the battle was quite brief. After managing to hit two death eaters with well-placed concussion charms, Karyn was placed under the Cruciatus Charm, and was tortured until an Auror had the sense to kill the death eater that held the curse upon her. Karyn collapsed, right there on the field of battle.
She woke up a week later, sore and in pain, but after a summer of recovery, Karyn continued teaching. That following summer, after Voldemort was destroyed, the world saw something it had never seen before, and will never see again: a completely wasted Karyn Tate dancing for the hooded gentlemen in The Hog’s Head.
Since then, Karyn has continued to teach. She detests Cornelius Fudge, and thinks that he needs to be thrown out of office, along with his whole motley of supporters. Though she has voted against him, she has made no strong anti-government motion. For now, she continues to teach, despite the constant darkness growing on Hogwarts.
Roleplay Sample: As soon as Karyn stepped in the Astronomy Tower, she found the roofless tower covered snow, and having a bitter chill that bit through her thick blue navy blue robes, and thick, matching blue wool cloak. With a gloved hand, she produced a wand, and with a flick of her wrist, the snow covering the tower disappeared. With a murmur of “Incendio,” the large fireplace burst into flames, crackling merrily as though it had been for hours.
Karyn stepped toward the chalkboard, and smartly rapped her wand upon the chalkboard. A piece of chalk laying upon the metal tray jumped alive, and began to scrawl upon the board
Our Sun has inspired mythology in almost all cultures, including ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Native Americans, and Chinese. We now know that the Sun is a huge, bright sphere of mostly ionized gas, about 4.5 billion years old, and is the closest star to Earth at a distance of about 150 million km. The next closest star - Proxima Centauri - is nearly 268,000 times farther away. There are millions of similar stars in the Milky Way Galaxy (and billions of galaxies in the universe). Our Sun supports life on Earth. It powers photosynthesis in green plants and is ultimately the source of all food and fossil fuel. The connection and interaction between the Sun and the Earth drive the seasons, currents in the ocean, weather, and climate.
The Sun is some 333,400 times more massive than Earth and contains 99.86 percent of the mass of the entire solar system. It is held together by gravitational attraction, producing immense pressure and temperature at its core (more than a billion times that of the atmosphere on Earth, with a density about 160 times that of water).
At the core, the temperature is 16 million degrees Kelvin (K), which is sufficient to sustain thermonuclear fusion reactions. The released energy prevents the collapse of the Sun and keeps it in gaseous form. The total energy radiated is 383 billion trillion kilowatts, which is equivalent to the energy generated by 100 billion tons of TNT exploding each second.
In addition to the energy-producing solar core, the interior has two distinct regions: a radiative zone and a convective zone. From the edge of the core outward, first through the radiative zone and then through the convective zone, the temperature decreases from 8 million to 7,000 K. It takes a few hundred thousand years for photons to escape from the dense core and reach the surface.
The Sun's "surface," known as the photosphere, is just the visible 500-km-thick layer from which most of the Sun's radiation and light finally escape, and it is the place where sunspots are found. Above the photosphere lies the chromosphere ("sphere of color" that may be seen briefly during total solar eclipses as a reddish rim, caused by hot hydrogen atoms, around the Sun. Temperature steadily increases with altitude up to 50,000 K, while density drops to 100,000 times less than in the photosphere. Above the chromosphere lies the corona ("crown" , extending outward from the Sun in the form of the "solar wind" to the edge of the solar system. The corona is extremely hot - millions of degrees Kelvin. Since it is physically impossible to transfer thermal energy from the cooler surface of the Sun to the much hotter corona, the source of coronal heating has been a scientific mystery for more than 60 years. Scientists believe that energy transfer has to be in the form of waves or magnetic energy.
Karyn sat down at her desk, wincing slightly at the ice cold chair. With another flick of her wand, the chair became warm and comfortable. Karyn sighed with relief…. She was not looking forward to the lesson ahead, having all of the older, and therefore less mature, students gathered together in one room. But she had to teach this lesson.
