Keys to Meditation
Keys to Meditation
Isn't it ironic that we give our physical bodies rest, a massage, a
soothing bath, we take care of it, pamper it, but we do not give our
minds a single minute of peace, of quiet on a conscious level, we do it
only when we sleep! We are made up of mind, body and spirit, and
meditation to me is nothing but giving our minds and our thought
processes a break. And we all know the benefits of taking breaks.
There are many many different ways one can meditate, breath awareness,
looking at a candle flame, chanting some mantra. To me, being aware of
our thoughts, our unconscious emotional patterns is true meditation more
so than trying to keep your mind quiet. Its called being the watcher.
Here's what Osho says:
"The state of no-mind or mindlessness is just the opposite of stilling
the mind -- it is getting beyond the mind. It is creating such a
distance between yourself and the mind that the mind becomes the
farthest star, millions of light years away, and you are just a watcher.
When the mind is stilled you are the controller. When the mind is not,
you are the watcher. These are the distinguishing marks.
When you are controlling something you are in tension; you cannot be
without tension, because that which is controlled is continuously trying
to revolt against you, that which is enslaved wants freedom. Your mind
sooner or later will explode with vengeance."
So, my suggestion would be to create your own meditation, walking in
nature could be meditation, or even playing with a child could be
meditation as long as it is done with mindfulness or awareness.
Here's what I believe are some key ideas to keep in mind.
1. Generally, we hear that mediation facilitates receiving messages from
your subconscious, unconscious mind etc. Though these things do happen,
I think it is essential to know that these are aspects of your own self.
Labelling them as something different from yourself creates an illusion
of being separate or compartmentalized, I would recommend being aware
that these are YOU - that you didn't communicate with before.
2. A lot of mediators are hung up on the fact that while meditating they
will be guided by some higher intelligence. This is setting yourself up
for disappointment, just enjoy the "process" of meditation, rather than
hankering after specific results.
3. Do not worry, or be dejected when you cannot quiet your mind the way
you think it should be, or read that it should happen. Make the effort
and let the Universe take care of the rest. I have heard from
experienced mediators of more than 25 years, how they still struggle to
stop thinking! Remember, the idea to stop thinking is a thought by
itself, and the harder you try the more you will get in the whirlpool of
not having any thoughts. I usually make a statement of intention right
before I meditate of what I want to happen, then let it go and trust
that the Universe will fulfill it.
4. Meditation is not the be all, end all of having expanded awareness,
even though it does help. Kindness of words, thoughts and deeds,
compassion and seeing the divinity in all of Creation should be a goal.
Meditation is a means to an end, it is not the end. I know of many, many
teachers who have never meditated, or do not feel the need to meditate
and yet are always in a state of bliss.
Find out what works best for you, carve out your own unique path and
follow your intuition.
