Leaving the Administration building (open)
Hawthorne wandered out of the administration building clutching a large pile of papers to her chest. Squinting her grey eyes against the sudden sunlight, she tried to make out what exactly was going on around her. The place was pretty, at least, it was amazing compared to home. Nervously she clicked her tongue piercing against her lip ring, incredibly unsure of where to go from here. The transfer person had been bloody confusing, and spoke at about a million words a second. The poor girl's head was still spinning.

She straightened out her ACDC t-shirt, proudly emblazoned with the words "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", and crammed as many of the papers as possible into the back pocket of her tattered jeans. This still left a few in her hand, but at least they were manageable now. With a final tug at her spiked collar, Hawthorne stepped out into the quad, aiming herself in the general direction of the dorms (she hoped). Gods this would be easier if her map was working. Why would the Raven be-damned thing only work when it wanted to?

Re: Leaving the Administration building (open)
Datu walked around the school, it was a nice sunny day. After gathering some books from the library, he started back for the dorms. Before he got there, though, he noticed an unfamiliar face. He looked at her, and saw that she was a bit lost. Must've been a transfer student, probably.....

He looked around, seeing no one else here to help. He sighed, headed towards the girl, and stopped a few feet away from her.

"Hey, you lost?"

Hawthorne furrowed her brow, bringing her eyebow piercing almost to the other side of her brow. It seemed that she was not the only person on the quad today. His offhanded "Hey you lost?" seemed kinda forced, but at this point, she really had to take what she could get. Besides, the kid wasn't that bad to look at.

"I'm looking for the dorms. I have to get my things to . . . "

She consulted the already sweat-stained and crumpled piece of paper in her hand.

"Floor 3, Room 2." She shrugged. "I thought I could figure it out on my own . . . " She stopped, suddenly realizing how insecure she sounded. She hunched her shoulders and scowled, chewing furiously on her lip ring. "Whatever. It doesn't matter. I'll prolly find it eventually."

Datu chuckled. He looked at the paper. Guess maps can sometimes be confusing. He looked at where the dorms were, then back at the girl.

"Well, I'm heading for the dorms right now. Want me to take you there?" He asked. So many transfer students nowadays...man, this school fills up fast!

Hawthorne seriously considered turning the boy down, after all, it was a weakness to accept help from others. Isn't that what her Da always said? After about thirty seconds of careful deliberation, she threw all that aside. She hadn't listened to the old drunks advice since she was thirteen.

"That would be great. What's your room number?"

Maybe she could make a friend, just one.

"Floor three, room twelve." They were on the same floor, so that would save him a lot of walking. "Come on." He turned towards the dorms, and started walking. While doing so, he checked his books, making sure he got what he needed. After doing so, he looked up to make sure he was going in the right direction.

"So, what's your name?"

Re: Leaving the Administration building (open)

She was surprised he was on the same floor as her, but glad that she wouldn't be putting him out, because that would have been horrible. At least if it was on the way anyways . . .

Hawthorne quietly followed, slightly behind the boy's left shoulder. Trying to make sense of the map, and the direction they were going. Trying to commit it to memory so she could make her own map later.

His question startled her, she wasn't entirely expecting to be making conversation, and she wasn't very good at it. She tried to remember the niceties her mother drilled into her.

"My name is Hawthorne . . . What about you?" There, that sounded about right. Maybe not as friendly as the boy's greeting, and she was pretty sure her voice trembled a bit at the end there. Maybe he wouldn't notice how nervous she was. She fiddled with the hoop in her nose to distract herself from her own agitation.

He smiled. "Datu."

Hawthorne....that was a bit of a wierd name. But then again, Datu was a bit of a wierd name as well. After passing a building, he turned a corner, and the dorms came into view. He lifted up one hand, and pointed towards it.

"That's the dorms right there. Not that bad of a place, if I should say so myself."

Hawthorne examined the building intently, commiting it to memory. She would not need help locating again, if she could help it.

"Your name is Datu? What nationality is your lineage?"

She turned to Datu with the first real interest of the day, shyness and nervousness forgotten as her passion for all things different and foreign bubbled to the surface. She couldn't think of ever running into anyone with that particular name before.

He turned around for a second, and smiled. Seems whatever person he runs into thinks his name is wierd. Well....almost every person. "I'm Filipino. Both my parents were." He turned around again, and started walking towards the dorms. After a few moments, he stopped again, and turned around.

"May I ask your nationality?"

She grinned half-heartedly, and rushed to catch up with him, standing beside him voluntarily for the first time.

"I'm Native American, reservation born and bred. I just have a thing for unique names. Who wants to share their identity with half-a-million people when you can be interesting and aloof? Though I suppose Datu might be a common name where you're from?"

Hawthorne wanted nothing more than to see the world, to learn about all kinds of people, everywhere. Though not necessarily to talk to them. Perhaps she may have leaked a little too much of that desire into her words, because she practically purred the last bit.

He smiled. "Yeah, I guess. But most people there don't use that name. Only the natives usually use it. The others just use common names like Michael, or stuff like that. My name makes me feel somehow different from the rest." He looked at her.

"Though, Hawthorne and names like that are the type of names Native Americans use, right?"

Hawthorne smiled, displaying her slightly crooked teeth.

"I suppose so. In the Anishinabe language my name is Miinensagaawanzh. But it's easier to translate it to just Hawthorne when you are surrounded by people who are mostly english speaking. They usually can't pronounce it."

She shifted her weight onto her other foot, and looked down at the ground.

"We believe that a name is bound to the injichaag, the spirit, so it's better to have it translated then mangled."

Datu listened to this intently, it was fun to learn about other cultures' ways and traditions. As he listened, they came to the door of the building. He opened it for her, and after she went in, he went in after her. "Names are pretty important, as if they're a part of you. They can never be taken away."

He lead her to the stairs, and was soon climbing them, waiting every now and then for Hawthorne.

Re: Leaving the Administration building (open)

They can never be taken away . . . Hawthorne paused for a moment at Datu's words, a dark shadow crossing over her face as they entered the building.

But they can be taken away, she thought to herself, They can be ripped from your very spirit and dangled in front of you, taunting you, daring you to take them back. The very ties that hold them to you can be severed, and they take such a long time to resew. After all, wasn't that why she was here, to try to reclaim her name, who she was . . .

Still, if she brooded she'd be left behind, so she scurried to catch up with Datu. Despite the dark travels of her thoughts, she couldn't contain a certain curiosity that had her looking left and right as they climbed the stairs.

"Thank you for putting up with me Datu, this is all kind of overwhelming."

He stopped, and smiled back at her. "It's no prob. It's in my nature to help people." Heheheh...you don't know how much I help people out... he thought as he remembered all the times he had helped people, with both small and big problems. He then looked back up the flight of stairs, and started climbing it again.

After a bit of climbing, they finally got to floor three. He went inside, and looked around. He then looked back at Hawthorne.

"Can you take it from here?"

Hawthorne smiled at Datu.

"Miigwech, Datu. Your help was greatly appreciated. I am fairly certain I can manage to find the room from here. I hope I shall see you again."

She offered him her hand, and one last nervous smile, before turning and walking up the hallway, reading each door number as she passed.

I hope my roommate is as easy to get along with as Datu was.
