Let me go... ok, this is my first try at writing something sappy, romantic, and melodramatic. If you don't care for that kind of thing...read this anyway, I need all the opinions I can get. ------------------------------------------------------------ She looked familiar, somehow. Her light bluish-green hair and deep green eyes reminded Falcon of another. As he and the lady stepped out onto the dance floor of Odaiba high, he could not shake the feeling that they had somehow done this before. The band struck up a slow tune, matching the music the two danced arm in arm about the floor, moving in perfect synchronicity. They danced as though they had danced that way for ages, held in each other's arms. the dance ended and Falcon stared the girl in the eyes. "Nimue..." With that, Falcon jerked out of the girl's arms and ran out the door, towards his home. Nimue watched him go with a sorrowful look on her face, and tears in her eyes. ------------------------------------------------------------ Falcon arrived at his home and sat down in his favorite chair near the fire. ~It figures~, he thought to himself. ~Can't I be allowed even a moment's peace? Can't she just leave me be? I see her in my dreams. I see her around every corner. In ever smiling face I see hers. WHY?~ "Falcon..." Falcon did not bother to turn around to face his visitor. His arms gripped the arms of his chair as he struggled to stay calm. "Yes, Mistress?" "Only a moment ago, you called me by my name..." "It was a mistake, Mistress. It will not happen again. I promise." "Merlin...please-" Falcon stood up and whirled around, his eyes blazing with fury. "DON'T EVER CALL BE BY THAT NAME AGAIN! MERLIN IS DEAD, DO YOU HEAR ME? HE DIED OVER A THOUSAND YEARS AGO, AND YOU KILLED HIM!" Nimue lowered her head. "Perhaps you're right, in a way I did kill him...but he still lives on-in you." "Perhaps, but not enough of him." "Really? I would say quite a bit. I've seen you with your friends, just as I saw you with Tiren and the others when they were younger. They're like a family to you, just like-" Falcon interrupted. "Don't say it...don't even speak his name. You don't have the right." Nimue spoke again, this time her voice had a hard edge to it. "Are you still blaming me for that? He would have died anyway by this time...I had nothing to do with his death." "Of course you did! Had I been there...had I been able to help him...he would have survived!" "Can you be sure of that?" "Perhaps not...but at least I could have done something!" Nimue was silent for a moment. "I still love you, you know." "Did you ever love me? Or was that just a game to you?" Nimue's eyes held tears as they met Falcon's. "Of course I did! I"m not heartless!" "Really? As they say now, 'ya could've fooled me'." Nimue seemed to have no reply. For a moment, both were silent and then Falcon spoke up again. "Do you know what it was like, being trapped in that cave for more than a thousand years?" "No. What was it like?" "Lonely. I remember the loneliness above all else. Lonely, and dark...there was no one there but me." "There was the mirror. I gave it to you so you could see what went on in the outside world, so that you could still experience life to some degree." "Experience life?" Falcon laughed, a humourless, cold laugh. "No, I could only watch, never experience. I watched as Arthur died, cut down by Mordred before my eyes. I watched as the round table was broken and nearly all it's members were killed. My students. My friends. My family. My life. I watched as the last of them faded away in his old age, he who was once among the mightiest of knights, Launcelot. I watched as their greatness, and mine faded into myth and legend, much of our lives forgotten. We were dust and ashes in the blowing wind, nothing remained of us but the barest remenants of our lives. Centuries passed, and still I watched. I saw kings rise and fall. I saw great empires rise, and join Camelot in the dust with the passing of centuries. I wept bitter tears for the slaughter of countless innocents, which I saw through the mirror's magic. I saw terrible mistakes made and could not correct them. I saw beautiful art created, but could not congratulate the artist. I saw ships with sails like great white wings sail the sea, but I could not sail upon them. That is what it was like in the cave, Nimue. Watching...never speaking to another, never being able to act. The greatest torture of all." Nimue listened to the speech, her head bowed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I...I had no choice. You were a man ahead of your time. You could have cause much damage..." "Could have? But not 'would have'. You didn't know, did you?" "No." "That was my time, Nimue. This is not. I belonged in the time of chivalry, before the Renaissance. I do not belong here. I do not belong Now. I have tried-God knows, I have tried." Nimue was sobbing violently now. Her body shook and after a time she was able to gasp out the words "forgive me." "Let me go" was Falcon's response. "You say you are sorry? Release me from your service. Let me be free, to do as I wish." "What would you wish to do?" "I don't know. Perhaps stay here, perhaps return to England...or perhaps go to my eternal rest, to be with all my lost friends once again." "No..." "Nimue. Did I not already say that I don't belong here? I should be dead, Nimue. I should have died more than a thousand years ago. You kept me alive, you restored me to youth. All so I could serve you...my Mistress. If you wish my forgivness, let me go." For a moment, nothing was said. Nimue's tear-filled eyes stared at Falcon's. She wanted to remember his eyes. She wanted to remember him, for soon he would be gone. "I...I release you. You need serve me no longer, Falcon, my Beloved. You are free." With that, Nimue fell to her knees and began to cry again. A moment later, she felt a hand rest on her shoulder. "You are forgiven...Beloved." "Falcon?" She looked up to see Falcon's smiling face, it too wet with tears. She leapt into his arms and he held her close. As she stood with his arms wrapped around him, Nimue recalled a saying she had heard long ago; 'if you love something, let it go. If it returns to you, it is yours forever. If it leaves, then it was never truly yours'. ------------------------------------------------------------ The End. Questions? Comments? Death threats? Boos? I kinda liked writing this for a change... |

Re: Let me go... 10 little Odaibans isn't done yet. I'll continue it soon, as soon as I decide exactly how I'm going to do the next bit...and probably alternate with chapters of Megabyte 2/4. Glad you all liked this one! |
