Lucy the Rufous Bettong
Lucy the Rufous Bettong
What a little cutie! Lucy was rescued from Blackbutt, a town about three hours' drive from Australia Zoo. Only three days ago, her mum had been killed and she was left all alone to fend for herself; poor dear! Little did her rescuer know, these gorgeous animals are quite rare.
After a check-up from the vets, Lucy is now in the safe hands of a qualified carer. It's quite a big job to look after such a small animal. Lucy requires feeding every two hours until she grows strong enough to be released and look after herself. Generally, Rufous Bettongs inhabit dry open forest and are most active at night time. They like to build grassy nests and even carry the nesting material around with their tails! Unfortunately these small marsupials often become victims of domestic animal attacks, so it's a good idea to keep pet dogs and cats chained up or inside at night time when Bettongs and other native wildlife are feeding and moving about. We look forward to following Lucy's progress and hope that she joins her Bettong friends back in the wild soon!
