Maire Nightshade
OC
Email Address: lotr_fan2003@msn.com
Your Name: Maddie or Mads
Code: Hermione Granger
Please note that Maire is being moved into Gryffindor, and also has been moved up a year!
IC
Full Name: Maire O’Connell Nightshade
Nickname(s): None
DOB: January 19, 1994
Year: 4th
Blood Type: Half-blood
House Preference: Gryffindor
Why: Even though Maire has been blessed with high amounts of energy, (some would consider her a little crazy) she certainly isn’t stupid, and does quite well in the scholarly portion of Hogwarts. Schoolwork has never really been a major problem, and her marks show consistently good grades. She is intelligent, but her bravery, humor, and rather outgoing personality have sorted her out of Ravenclaw and into Gryffindor. She’s a bit of a troublemaker, and school usually comes second to whatever happens to be at hand.
Physical Appearance:
Maire is of average height for a girl her age, not reaching past 5’ 5”, and weighing in at about 125 pounds at most. Maire loves to eat, and she finds that tiring exercise pretty much keeps the weight under control. Her waist is short and muscled from the insane amounts of Quidditch she seems to smash into her day. Despite the fact that she has short legs, Maire has agility and stamina to keep going at a fast running pace. Her speed comes partially from her strong legs, and partially from her insane bursts of crazy energy that she seems to pull out of nowhere. Long arms give way to long fingers, particularly nimble from years of Muggle piano lessons, which Maire still takes in the summer.
Her skin is a very light olive color, coming from her British father’s side. Most of her looks come from her medium skinned father, rather than her fair skinned, redheaded mother. Her brothers Liam and Brendan share those looks with her, whereas Gavin and Shannon strongly resemble their mother.
Moles cover her arms, a trait which she doesn’t like to reveal, and isn’t fond of. She has an oval shaped face, with high attractive cheekbones. Under finely knit arched eyebrows are golden-brown almond shaped eyes, with just the tiniest crescent of green in their corners. Her hair reaches down to the small of her back in waves of brown tinted with copper and chestnut colors. In the summer, the copper is replaced with sun streaks, a natural occurrence every year. Maire thinks her hair is a pain and difficult to manage, but is truly very pretty. She usually wears her hair down, in a ponytail, or a high messy bun to get it out of the way. Her straight, white teeth are another sign of her Muggle heritage. She has only just gotten her braces off, and feels very inclined to grin whenever possible. Large chapped lips sit on a small, slightly protruding chin. Her nose is a bit of an offset, being slightly hooked, but isn’t as dramatically noticeable as she thinks it is.
Having both parents as being half bloods, Maire is fairly into Muggle clothing. She dons Muggle clothing whenever she can, feeling as they give her more freedom then most robes. Layered and witty tee shirts, jeans, warm sweaters, and colorful shoes and socks are usually what she is seen wearing if she doesn’t’ have class. When she is forced to wear her school robes, her blue and bronze tie is done up loosely, sometimes irking the Professors. Her v-neck gray sweater is always seen slightly out of order, and her oxford shirtsleeves are rolled up to her elbow. Her main goal is to see how far she can edit the standard uniform, with out getting sent to scrub the Potions dungeon. In the winter, long sleeve shirts are her constant companions, with the occasional scarf thrown into the mix. Inside the waist band of her pleaded skirt sits her Eleven-½ inch hawthorn wand, with a unicorn tail core (plucky.)
Personality:
A good word to describe Maire would probably be social. She loves making people laugh with her witty and sarcastic words, and loves to be the center of attention. Her out-going nature is one of her strongest features. Maire is most at ease with large groups of people. If you stuck her in a room full of people she didn’t know, she would be one of the first ones to break the uncomfortable tension. Communicating with others is what she does best. Maire is into boys. She likes flirting, and really wants to find a steady boyfriend. When she starts to have “feelings” for someone of the opposite gender, she tends to loose all ground, and becomes somewhat obsessive. She isn’t one of those girls who switches whom they like every few minutes; she tends to stick to one person at a time.
Maire hates being confined in any place for too long, and gets bored with things that are repetitive. Under ceremony, or when she puts her mind to it, her vocabulary can be quite extensive. She has a loud mouth that gets her into trouble with a number of people, (mostly Professors.) Sometimes she really should just shut up instead of babbling on, as she tends to do when excited or angry. Her temper and mouth combo are usually what gets her into trouble in the first place. With people she knows and doesn’t like, she’s a bit cheeky and rude, often insulting them to their face, instead of fitting the bash into a dry comment. Maire is notorious for holding grudges for years, being as stubborn as she is. The “forgive and forget” part of arguments she blithely ignores. Frowns rarely come for this girl, but when they do come, they stay for a while, giving Maire an almost surly look on occasion.
A bit of a daredevil, Maire participates in more than occasional private prank. She loves pranking people, and generally causing a ruckus in her wake. The rush of sticking a firework under the chair of a particularly nasty 6th year is all too tempting for her. The Prefects personally know her around the castle, and are constantly dragging her by the ear to the nearest disciplinarian. She has gotten into trouble a handful of times, but most of the Hogwarts staff are used to it. Maire openly shows her emotions, not usually hiding anything. She also expresses her opinions of anything openly, sometimes getting into some pretty bad arguments with those who don’t always agree with her. Maire is a bit of a sore loser when it comes to sports, or competing for the best grades. She doesn’t like to have somebody be better than her at something, and when that is the case, she makes excuses to cover up the reason they are so skilled at what they do. She often gets surly when she can’t find any reason to show that she is better than her opponent.
If she gets angry, Maire’s best defense is to casually slip insults into the conversation, openly bashing the offender. She tries to put the insults in as witty of a fashion as she can, making them worse and worse as the conversation progresses. By the end of her talking, the person she’s insulting will have figured out her little scheme, but Maire lightly brushes it off, feeling that insulting the person was a finished job.
Maire is fairly intelligent, but it comes after her outgoing nature and bravery, but it does play a significant role. Since the time she was little, school has always been something that she excels at without trying extremely hard. Her very good memory helps in this respect. Usually she only has to hear something once or twice to remember it permanently, and use it on a homework assignment or test. She will study if she doesn’t know the material, or cannot find anything to do otherwise. Maire has a serious love of writing, and reading. She loves the thought of words weaving a pattern, and is seen in the common room to the late hours with her nose buried in a book. However, if she had to pick between going to a social event, and studying, she would probably be out partying, instead of flying solo.
Maire is almost always awake, and chipper. She is what most would call “hyper,” but she would rather call it “ecstatic.” At almost every waking hour, she has enough energy to run round the Quidditch pitch five times, and proceed to race up to her next class. She usually is out of bed by dawn, and likes to stay up fairly late hours. People wonder how she seems to conjure up this extra energy out of nowhere. While some are slumped over at the breakfast table, she’s randomly babbling to anybody who happens to have the misfortune of sitting next to her. Most find it a serious oddity that anybody can be so loud at 7:00 am. Maire has been playing the piano from an early age, and actually enjoys it, even though she pretends she doesn’t. Quidditch is also one of her strong passions, taking up the Wimbourne Wasps as her team of choice.)
History:
Maire was born as a fourth child to Garreth and Shea Nightshade on a cold winter evening in a local London hospital. (Maire received her surname of Nightshade from her father, and took her mother’s maiden name of O’Connell.)
Both of her parents were half blood wizards, and met at Hogwarts. They started to date in their 3rd year, having a very close, and romantic relationship. They married a few years after leaving the school. Neither family was terribly wealthy, but combined they had enough money to buy a small Victorian home, and have their first child Liam. Soon after Liam came Shannon, the Nightshade’s first and long awaited daughter. Gavin and Maire came within only a year and a half of each other, and the youngest child, Brendan came a few years after. Since Maire was born, she has always been close to the other branches of her family, including her father’s brother Nathaniel, (Maire’s uncle) and has gotten along quite well with her favorite cousin, Erica Nightshade, who now attends Hogwarts with Maire.
The Nightshade house is a busy and chaotic one. With five children, Maire’s parents find it a little tough to make ends meet, and have to use a little of the hand-me-down syndrome to keep things running smoothly. Maire is used to a crazy house, and isn’t the least bit upset by loud noises, emotional breakdowns, flu viruses, yelling fests, and general disarray. None of it is something she hasn’t seen or heard before. This commotion can cause Maire to feel a little ignored, but that’s just a distorted view of a teenager. In reality, she has a loving family that can just get a little sidetracked.
Garreth and Shea tried to accommodate their children to both the magical world, and the Muggle world. Both being half bloods, they had a very good grasp on both sides, and tried to teach that to their children. Each child was asked to take up a musical instrument, a custom in that had been in Shea’s family for years. They weren’t totally devoid of magic however. The married couple used simple spells around the house, and tried to introduce magic slowly. As well as holding the “which house Maire will be sorted into” grudge, Shea and Garreth were immensely strong Quidditch supporters, with their children following suit. (Shea is a huge fan of the Ballycastle Bats, whereas Garreth prefers the Wimbourne Wasps, much to Shea’s dismay. A team full of ‘duffers with brooms’ as she fondly puts it.)
When Maire turned seven, it was quite apparent that she had magic like her three siblings before her. Her parents first noticed when fell out of a tree, and landed on the ground unhurt. From then on, Shea and Garreth held an endless debate of which house she was to be sorted into at Hogwarts. Garreth had been a die hard Ravenclaw, and Shea was a ruthless Gryffindor. Maire’s brother Liam had been sorted into Gryffindor, and Shannon had been put into Ravenclaw house. Gavin was only 9 when the rivalry started, and had yet to be sorted.
And then that faithful summer occurred. Maire was sitting at the table, cutting her toast up haphazardly into tiny pieces on a July morning, her older brother Gavin sitting next to her reading the Daily Prophet. Through the open window fluttered a great horned owl, with a large yellowish envelope addressed in green ink. It wheeled out of the kitchen, dropping the letter smack dab onto Maire toast. She let out a squeak, and yelled frantically for the other members of the house. While in Diagon Alley, her father bought Maire a pretty female brown owl, which she named Lark.
Naturally, Maire was excited as a first year. She was sorted into Gryffindor, (to her father’s dismay,) and lived the normal life of an 11 year old. In her first year, she received very strong marks and managed to find a few close friends as well as a gaggle of students from other houses. One of her close friends introduced her to a life as a troublemaker. Now that she had a feel for the chaotic arts, Maire would pull any prank, and had a small business of handing off Dungbombs to some of the older years. In this first year, Maire managed to receive a fistful of Howlers.
Second year turned out to be a little less dangerous for Maire. She had learned by now how to not get caught in her pranks, and successfully teamed up with Kendra Denwaer: a very dangerous pair indeed. They like to think of themselves as “the other Weasley twins,” and try to continue that saying to this very day. Her grades continued to be good, and she found a passion for her Defense of the Dark Arts class. Maire also found her idol: Puck Goodfellow. That was the turning point in which Maire found her inspiration for prank playing. Even to this day, the Gryffindor still shamelessly idolizes Puck.
Third year was her metamorphosis from being the “small little tots” to the older, and in her mind, more sophisticated class of Hogwarts. No longer did she feel as lost and confused; she could dodge any curveball Hogwarts could throw at her. It may not necessarily have been true, but in Maire’s mind, it was. She was in her prime. She made a lot of new friends, and generally got accustomed to her new way of living.
Now in her fourth year, Maire’s found her nitch, and is continuing to try to get suitable grades, as well as juggle her social life. But would Maire would really like is a steady boyfriend…she is determined to meet her goal this year.
Roleplay Sample:
Maire Nightshade sat at her kitchen table, watching the chaotic day unfold. She herself was eating a few slices of toast, and a glass of orange juice. Her younger brother Brendan sat in the seat next to her, humming happily to himself, squishing porridge with his spoon. It looked very strange: two kids sitting calmly at the breakfast table while a loud argument was going on behind them.
“The answer is no, Shannon. You don’t need to bring Kevin over here!” Mrs. Nightshade exclaimed, blue-green eyes flashing dangerously.
Her daughter gave her an ugly look. “Why do you always push me down? Why can’t I do what I want? One more year at Hogwarts, and I’ll be living in my own house, for Merlin’s sake!” Shannon yelled, surprisingly loud for a teenage girl. Gavin came up next to the table, one hand holding the Daily Prophet, the other with a full glass of milk. His red hair was sticking up oddly, and from the look of his half shut-eyes, he wasn’t awake either.
He was rolling his eyes as he sat down next to his little brother, casually flipping the paper open. Gavin wasn’t into talking in the morning, and this morning certainly wasn’t going well.
“Mum, please…” Shannon said as calmly as she could manage.
“No, Shannon. And that’s final. I know you and Kevin are very close right now, but a boy in the house? A boy you are dating?”
“I LIVE with four boys here anyway! And it’s not like they aren’t! What makes them so different from Kevin?”
Gavin turned his head to wrinkle his nose at his sister. “Don’t be ridiculous. We’re your brothers. And don’t talk about us as if we aren’t even here…”
Maire silently agreed with Gavin, but decided against saying anything. She knew Shannon enough to realize that she could be violent.
“Fine!” Shannon stormed off, slamming the kitchen door on her way out, and making quite a show of banging back up to her room. Maire’s mother let out an exasperated sigh, as she leaned up against the counter. “What did I do to deserve this?” she quietly said as she rubbed her temples.
“Mum, she’s not that bad. Honestly,” Maire added, trying to be helpful. She felt a sharp pain on her shin, and glared at Gavin who had apparently kicked her from under the table. She gave him a sharp kick back, hearing him yelp softly. On a normal day, Maire would have rebelled. But at this moment, she wasn’t really thinking about where she was. She was thinking about Hogwarts. Starting your fourth year is a big deal, after all…
