Meryl Streep Film "Dark Matter" Now Casting
"Dark Matter", an upcoming drama film starring Meryl Streep, is now casting many starring and supporting roles for production this summer.
Set in a college town in the midwest, this dramatic feature is based on a true story of a gifted physics graduate student from China who went on a murder rampage at the University of Iowa in the early 1990s after he was passed over for an academic honor.
The film will star veteran actress Meryl Streep, who has been nominated for over ten Oscars in her career, most recently for her role in the hit film "Adaptation". In the past few years she has also starred in the films "The Hours" and "Marvin's Room".
"Dark Matter" is being produced by Mary Salter and Andrea Miller. It will be directed by Chen Shi-Zheng from a screenplay by Billy Shebar.
"Dark Matter" has a variety of principal and supporting roles still open. The film is scheduled to begin production in July 2004.
ROLES AVAILABLE:
FEMALES
"Emily Zax", Caucasian or African-American, mid 20s - 30s. She is an extremely intelligent female scientist studying astrophysics and cosmology. She's abrasive, smart and beautiful, she is the younger wife of a science professor named Whitehead. She dares to publicly refute a respected professor's theory, warning her colleagues against getting caught up with theories and "mythologizing".
"Jackie", Caucasian, 19 - early 20s. A sweet blonde co-ed, with true American beauty and a big American smile, she flirts with a Chinese graduate student while he tutors her for an Astronomy course. When Liu Xian’s feelings for her grow serious, she is alarmed. A hunky American guy like Alan is more her speed.
"Hildy", Caucasian, 30s. She is the copy editor of "The Journal of Cosmology" of which Reiser is editor. She’s the perfect foil for her boss' ego. Genuine, warm and sympathetic, she enjoys what she does and is unswayed by the dramas of high-strung personalities around her. She’s dispassionate, dryly witty, tells it like she sees it. She simply does what it takes get the job done.
"Cashier", any ethnicity, 18 - 20s. Working class female employee at the Food Mart who checks out the Chinese guys and demonstrates "drumstick and thigh" using her own leg as a model.
"Gretchen Reiser", Caucasian, 40s. She is the attractive but neglected wife of the respected professor Reiser. Perhaps of European descent, she is a stylish, chain-smoker, with a sharp tongue and a caustic humor. She probably lost her husband’s interest years ago but is trapped in a marriage with the "star scientist" and relegated to giving charming dinner parties. Though pleasant and solicitous of the guests, her banter is superficial at best. When her self-absorbed husband takes her for granted, she dryly tells him off.
"Janet", American-born Chinese, 19 - 20s. She has a look that resembles Janet Jackson. Vivacious and attractive, she’s begun dating another Chinese graduate student named Little Square, and they are likely to get married, handle his green card and start a family in the near future. She has no accent and does not speak Chinese. They are interrupted by another Chinese student while having noisy sex.
"Susan Thorn", Caucasian, mid 40s - 50. Zaftig, clad in ethnic outfits from her travels abroad, she’s in charge of the Job Placement Office at the university. Liu Xian's persistence makes her uncomfortable and she’s embarrassed by his gifts.
"Clerk", any ethnicity, 40s. A sweet-faced female postal worker who runs after Liu Xian when he forgets his change.
MALES
"Alan", Caucasian, 18 - mid 20s. A handsome lanky blond undergrad with an earring, who offers to show Liu Xian how to play Frisbee, and performs a phony Kung Fu routine in an attempt to connect with him. Not the most focused of students, he has a hard time following the class astronomy lecture.
"Gary Small", Caucasian, mid 20s - 30s. An ordinary-looking post-doctoral candidate who’s got a cute Chinese girlfriend. He's highly pragmatic and intensely protective of his own position in the department. He's the yes-man of the respected faculty member Reiser, and Small jumps to his defense at a cosmology symposium, challenging his colleagues to provide a better model of the universe.
"James Eaton", Caucasian, mid 40s - mid 50s. The Cosmology Department Chairman at the university. He's a solid, burly man who has minimal ego, no edge. He's well-tenured and well-meaning academic, who having lost his passion for science, is now a rather ordinary faculty drone. He is encumbered with a drinking problem and an insufficient backbone.
"Student DJ", Caucasian, 20s. A mediocre wedding-party-type DJ. He presides over an empty dance floor at the student union disco, trying to drum up some excitement by playing techno music with a disturbing beat to a new crop of physics and astronomy students.
"Renny", any ethnicity, 40 - 50. The immaculately groomed manager of an upscale clothing store. Originally from a more cosmopolitan city, his delicate flair makes him seems out of place in the Midwest. Joanna counts on his advice when she buys an expensive silk shirt.
"Whitehead", Caucasian, 70. A distinguished scientist, "the grandfather of black holes", who commands respect as an elder statesman and envy because he’s re-married, to a babe. He is on the panel reviewing Reiser’s grant.
