Nathaniel Perlman, Lawyer/Death Eater
OOC
Name: Serena Esterly
Contacts: I_Read_The_Quibbler@hotmail.com (You'd probably do better to just ezmail me, though...)
Age: 16
Code: Rita Skeeter
IC
Name: Nathaniel Perlman
Nickname(s): Nathan, Nate
DOB: February 20th, 1968
Blood: Pureblood
Previous School/House: Hogwarts/Slytherin
Occupation: : Death Eater / Lawyer / Member of the Wizengamot (Council of Magical Law)
Physical Appearance: Nathan Nathan’s hair is a little on the wavy side. He keeps it cut a little past shoulder length, though it curls out at the end so it appears to be shoulder length. Black in color, at the age of 40 he’s starting to receive the smallest amount of gray strewn throughout his dark hair. While many men are alright with the aging salt-and-pepper colored hair, he is far from content with the aging process. The moment he spots the discolored hairs he pulls them out, stubbornly refusing to admit that he’s getting old. He never does anything special with his hair such as gel it; he just always lets it do its own thing.
His eyes are a captivating shade of deep, rich dark brown, which can unnerve almost anyone they focus on. They give away the depth and knowledgeable look that comes with age... and he has certainly seen many things that others haven’t. His eyes are keen and sharp, and he often sees things before others do. His eyebrows are only a little on the bushy side, and his eyelashes are a little thick for a male’s. Because he often doesn’t get as much sleep as he should, Nathan can sometimes be seen with dark bags under his eyes. This is a sure sign that he has been working hard on something, or had something on his mind, as these are the two main reasons for him to be up all hours of the night.
Overall, he still looks like he could be thirty, as aging is an extremely slow process in his family. His looks are rather deceiving. His face is smooth and wrinkle-free, which is quite an accomplishment for a man of forty. He has some facial hair, consisting of a mustache and beard, both thin and neatly trimmed at all times. Most of his clothing, outside of his usual sets of Wizengamot robes and other wizarding wear, consists of dress suits in a variety of colors. Always wanting to look presentable no matter where he’s going, he has suits and ties to match any occasion.
He stands with naturally well-aligned posture, never slouches when he sits down. At a height of 6’ 1” and a weight of 150 lbs, he’s skinny yet muscular. He isn't tall enough to truly 'tower' over most people though his height can be intimidating to certain people just by the way in which he holds himself. Though he is thin for a man of his age, he seems to always be eating yet never gains a pound. As he enjoys physical activity and works out whenever he gets the chance, he is strong and muscular (though they are subtly muscles, not bulging ones).
Personality: Nathan is a rather complex person. He is, first and foremost, a lawyer. Having worked for the world renowned Profeta & Hahn law firm, which is infamous for defending Death Eaters, he is now a member of the Wizengamot. Because of this, Nathan is naturally argumentive. He can win almost any argument, yet he has the experience to know when he is fighting a losing battle. In his opinion, knowing when to give up is one of the most admirable qualities of a person.
He’s a little defensive as well, and tends to take things more personally than someone might have meant for them to be. When he has to work with a group he’ll insist on being in charge because he’d rather have things done his way. The only exception made to this fact is when he knows and trusts the person who is in charge. There are very few people in the world whom he trusts, but those few he’ll obey no matter what they ask him to do.
He’s loyal to whatever he happens to be doing at the moment and gets easily frustrated by the inconsistencies of others, especially when the people he happens to be working with don't keep their commitments or promises. When put in these situations, truth wins out over tact, but he’ll try not to anger anybody with his comments. He knows better than to go out and make enemies… he has enough as it is.
He’s a smooth talker who can usually convince people into or out of doing anything he wants them to. Nathan has learned the art of talking circles around people until they say what he wants them to say, especially when they are reluctant to tell him. He isn’t afraid to take charge of a situation if he feels that he has something to contribute. It is easy for his confidence to come across as cockiness, even it isn’t meant to; because sometimes it is meant as cockiness. He’s decisive, so when he makes up his mind on something then there will be no changing it. He’s also good at making quick decisions and thinking on his feet, which is mostly because of his experience as a lawyer.
Nathan isn’t afraid to lie to get what he wants, which is obvious by his actions in everyday life. While he usually worked against the Ministry as a Defense Lawyer, his position was a neutral one; after all, somebody had to defend the bad guys! He obviously showed enough power, despite what side he was on, to earn a spot on the Wizengamot Council. Because he feels that he’s earned everything he has received, he usually feels that he can do what he wants without asking for permission, and rarely obeys orders he doesn’t agree with. He holds his own sense of direction and logic in high regard and assumes that he’s right more often than not.
Nathan is also a family man. With a wife and a daughter, there are some things he has to think twice about before doing. He would never want to put any of them into harm’s way which is why he has never really involved them in anything he had done until this past year, when he told Regina that he was, in fact, a Death Eater. He cares a lot about his family and feels that everything he does is in their best interest. The only reason he told Reggie was so that in the event that anything were to happen, she could make a knowledgeable decision on what to do. He also protects his wife, who is also a Death Eater, whenever the two of them work together. He’s very protective when it comes to his family and he would do anything for them. It is one of the times when he is truly selfless.
He believes that honesty is always the best policy, and will rarely sugarcoat a situation unless it is in his best interest to do so. This is why he told Regina, now that she was 16, about what he did with the Death Eaters. He doesn’t like to lie to people and always says exactly what he’s thinking. He won’t hesitate to tell a superior if he things something needs a change, though he knows how to be tactful about it.
History: Nathan’s father, William, as well as his mother, Elizabeth, had come from very poor families. Though they were from a long line of purebloods and were extremely proud of their backgrounds, neither of them had enough to their name to make a real difference in the magical world, political-wise. They worked extremely hard though school and were Head Boy and Head Girl of their graduating class; William of Slytherin, Elizabeth of Ravenclaw. It was only through a strong work ethic and persistence that they built the Perlman name up to something to be proud of. Before long the two of them were very prestigious lawyers, with more money than they knew what to do with.
It was this that allowed their only child, Nathaniel, to begin his life one step ahead of them by already giving him a well-known name that others would recognize and respect. Though they firmly believed that purebloods were superior, and they defended convicted Death Eaters, the position of a defense lawyer was a ‘necessary evil’ in the just and fair world of today. They played it off as ‘just doing their job’, as opposed to actually believing in the superiority that the Death Eaters preached, and so their name lacked the taint of a well-known Dark Arts family’s name.
It was with this clean slate that Nathan started his life. It was a rare occasion that he didn’t get something that he asked for, as his parents wanted him to live the childhood that they had been denied. They gave him everything he asked for and denied him nothing, whether it be their attention, information, or an item. Young Nathan quickly developed a love for reading, which evolved into a love of mysteries. He would spend countless hours trying to figure out the solutions to books before he reached the end. His parents spotted this curiosity in him and nurtured it with books and puzzles.
Though Nathan was seen as a sort of bully among his friends, he was also respected. He was always the leader of whichever group of kids he happened to be hanging around with at the moment. He took criticism well, and though he often ended up beating up the person who gave him the critique he usually took it to heart. He was always eager to find ways to improve upon the way he did things.
When he started at Hogwarts, he wasn’t quite sure what to expect. He soon realized that it was pretty much just as his life had been before school, only now he had to share a room with other boys. He was an exemplary student due to his desire to know anything and everything, and with his confident and somewhat self-righteous attitude he fit right in with most of the other Slytherins.
Even though he was never loud or outspoken, he held his influence through quieter and more subliminal ways. He made friends with the older students easily and never felt embarrassed or inept no matter whom he was surrounded by. He was one of the most sociable students in his year, which was a lot to say about his personality. He could find common ground with almost any student, and so he had many friends. He made sure to make the important friends first, though, as he was always looking out for himself.
He always had friends who were older than him, which gave him leverage in certain situations such as fights and bragging rights. He managed to avoid the complications of having a girlfriend until his fifth year, during which time he began to date Hannah Stone. The two were both Slytherins in the same year, so they had known each other for the past five years, though only as friends. They were a good match for each other, and the two quickly became an ‘item’.
The remainder of Nathan’s years at Hogwarts were pretty much the same. He continued to date Hannah, and he continued to be a commendable student. He made the titles of Prefect for both his fifth and sixth years, though he did not make Head Boy in his seventh year which upset him greatly. Hannah, however, made Head Girl, and he was very proud to be her boyfriend.
They left Hogwarts but never lost touch with each other. They got engaged, and both sides of the family were thrilled. Nathan’s parents thought that he couldn’t have picked a better bride, and so they supported him completely. Things were a lot easier that way, and by the time the young couple was 19 they were married.
This wasn’t that big of a deal for the two of them, as Nathan had already began working for the firm which his father had recently retired from. Since he had taken many of his best traits from his father he fit right in as a lawyer, and though he didn’t do a lot of serious work at first he was making enough money to support both himself and Hannah. Their parents had gotten together and purchased them a new home for their wedding present, and they were grateful for the head start they had gotten in their new life from that gift.
It wasn’t long before Nathaniel had proven himself at his work and was promoted to a full-time lawyer position. His quick wit and sharp senses made him the perfect candidate for the position, and he rose above many of the veterans in just a few short years.
When he was 24 years old his wife became pregnant. He wasn’t at all disappointed when she had a girl, even though he had been secretly hoping for a son. There had been a long period of arguing over a name before the baby was even born, and after a lot of fighting and the occasional rational discussion they had decided on Charles if it were a boy and Regina if it were a girl. Though Hannah had wanted to name her daughter Rosaline after her mother, Nathan didn’t like the name and had talked her out of it. It sounded like such an old-fashioned name to him, and he just didn’t like it. He had won out, so when their daughter was born they named her Regina Hannah Perlman, her middle name obviously coming from her mother’s name, which was his idea to make up for winning the battle over the name.
He tried to be around as much as possible during his daughter’s childhood. She was a very sociable child and seemed to be able to make friends with anyone she met. She rarely cried and had a regular sleeping pattern, so it was easy to plan his day around Regina. He gave her pretty much anything she wanted just as his parents had done with him, and while Hannah didn’t like the way he was spoiling her he made sure that while she never went without anything she also wasn’t a typical ‘spoiled’ child.
Regina showed an early interest in literature and he fueled that interest by constantly reading to her and teaching her new things. It was at this time that one of his closest friends from his office confided in him about the Death Eaters. This was at the height of Lord Voldemort’s powers, and because Nathaniel was only in his late 20’s and with a wife and daughter to look after he not only saw this as an opportunity to grow as a person but also as added protection for his family from his new friends. He decided to join the Death Eaters, and was branded with the Dark Mark. As he trusted his wife more than any other person in the world he decided to tell her and only her about his decision. She agreed that it was the right one to make at the moment, that it was their best bet in this world, and she joined as well.
Since his position as a lawyer wasn’t always a full-time job it gave him ample time to escape from work for a few hours and do little odds and ends for the Death Eaters. It was not long after he joined, however, that Lord Voldemort was defeated. Because he was new and of such a low importance among the group, Nathan was easily overlooked in the investigations that followed.
At the age of 30 Nathan had been approached about a position on the Wizengamot Council. This was a great honor and he was one of the younger members of this select group of people. This gave him more access to the Ministry, however, and as he did odds and ends around the offices where the Council gathered he became a familiar face within the Ministry.
Before he knew it, Regina was heading for Hogwarts. He was 34 at this time, and it was a big deal for them to watch their only daughter grow up so quickly. As a father, Nathan could only hope and pray that he had raised Regina to be the type of daughter he could be proud of. He had instilled upon her everything that he knew and believed, yet sometimes he had to wonder if it was enough. When she wrote back home telling them that she had been sorted into Ravenclaw, he was glad that if she wasn’t a Slytherin she had at least been in the second best house (in his opinion). He wondered if he had really raised her to be like himself, though, because he had truly expected her to be a Slytherin. She was intelligent, yes, but she could also be sneaky and cunning when she wanted to be.
Things went on in the same pattern for the next few years. Recently, rumors had been spreading among some of his old companions that the Dark Arts and those who followed it were rising to power again, and his curiosity got the better of him. Though he wasn’t sure if it was the wisest thing to get involved again it was also nearly impossible to ignore the call as his Dark Mark burned stronger.
This past summer he finally decided to tell Regina about what it was that he did outside of his job. He didn’t know what he would be getting into in the upcoming year or so, and if something were to happen he had wanted her to be able to make calm and rational decisions based upon facts rather than rumors. He wanted her to know because he felt that he owed her that much, because she didn’t ask to be part of a Dark family. She took it pretty hard and ran away, though Nathan never followed her. He trusted Regina just as much as he trusted himself, and he knew that she had a good head on her shoulders. He felt that if he simply gave her time and let her have her space, well, then she’d come to her senses.
Things didn’t work out quite so smoothly, though he couldn’t say that he was displeased with the situation. Though there were still some hard feelings, he knew that Regina would never betray him or his wife. She loved him far too much, and as the two were practically best friends when it came down to it he doubted that she’d ever do anything to compromise his safety. He hopes that, if the situation ever arises, Regina will follow in his footsteps and join the ranks of Death Eaters. He knows that she had been sneaking out his books on the Dark Arts, and while she may be too innocent to use any of it he never stopped her because he hopes that she’ll be just as intrigued as he was.
Now Regina is in her sixth year at Hogwarts, and the actions of the Death Eaters are becoming more and more involved. He hopes that things will go smoothly as they have for the past few years of his life, though he doubts it. He isn’t afraid to use what he has at his disposal, and that makes him a potentially dangerous person. Only time will tell what fate has in store for him, and he’s eager to see what the rising powers of Percy Weasley and Panthera Lupus will bring to the ranks; one could only hope that they will lead them to victory for the first time in a very long time.
Roleplay Sample: Nathan watched as his daughter, broom in hand and wand in pocket, exited through her bedroom window. He smiled because he knew that she thought that he was completely blind to what she was doing, when in reality he knew pretty much everything that went on under his roof. He knew that she’d been sneaking his Dark Arts books from his locked chest in his bedroom. He also knew when she snuck out, and though he didn’t follow her he doubted that she was doing anything horrible. She didn’t have it in her to go and be overly rebellious, and so he resolved himself to waiting patiently for her to arrive home late at night, just to make sure she was safe. He normally didn’t worry, but things tended to be different when it came to his daughter.
Regina was gone, and he found himself with absolutely nothing to do. He had just finished up a case back at the office, and there were no new cases to be tried back at the Wizengamot in the Ministry. His plum colored robe with an elaborate silver W on the left side had been collecting dust up in his closet, and he was almost eager for something to happen in the crime world, just to give him something to do. He was going on vacation soon enough, though, and hoped that something would pop up while he was gone. He always loved a challenge.
As if to answer his silent pleas for action, he felt a burning on his upper arm which could only signify one thing. A small smile slowly spread across his face despite the slight pain that the burning brought to him, because this only meant one thing; that what he’d been feeling for these past few weeks was true. He had sensed this call, and couldn’t have thought of anything more enjoyable at that very moment than to go and answer it.
The thought of things returning to their full extent after such a long hiatus of activity, well, only good could come of it this time around. Nathan trusted the people who were in charge, and even though the head person appeared to be Lord Maleham it was easy to see that this wasn’t always the case. Percy Weasley and Panthera Lupus seemed to be taking charge of everything, and those were the only two people that Nathan could see giving him orders. He trusted their judgment and knew that they had minds similar to his own; he liked that.
Deciding to get moving before he got too distracted and ended up late, he quickly went inside so that he could apparate in private. Once he was inside the solitude of his home, he disappeared with a pop.
