Quote:NEW YORK -- If you just bought a DVD-burning drive for your computer and think that for once you're current with the latest and greatest, it's disappointment time. Manufacturers are soon launching drives that can store double the amount of data on a disc.

Re: New DVD burners double capacity !!
Well the current burners were what, $400+ when they came out? Assume the same for the new 9.4 gig ones. Your call.
Personally I am thinking about getting one and when the new ones come out look at the prices. If it isn't too insane I'll get a new one and sell the old one or put it in my second computer.

Say I wanted to make a 'backup' of a movie I've got on DVD. You need software for that, right? I could swear I remember something about 3-2-1 software that would bypass the protection on DVDs, but you can't buy it any more (or something like that). Just having a DVD burner doesn't mean you can copy DVDs the way having a CD burner lets you copy CDs, right?
Currently you get about an hour of NTSC resolution to a DVD. It's perfect for home movie projects and archiving 4.7 GB of data. If you want pixelated crap, you can get several hours though. :)
Sony has a hella deal on 8X writers right now. I picked mine up for about $160 after rebate.

You wouldn't be able to get a full dvd onto a normal 4.7GB disk anyway. Commercial dvds are dual layer they are double that size. Maybe with the new drives it will work.
What you really need to do is to get a ripper and save the stuff you want off the original then burn that. I believe there are rippers to be found on the net.
