i am a stargate fan big time and i have been introduced to the world of costumes, and i like it, but i don't have a clue how to get started, so if anyone wants to help me to get started then that would be excellent, hope to hear from some one soon.
Well the first step is to figure out which costume you want to go for first, but if it's anything to do with the SGC costumes alot is got from army surplus.

well i wanna go for the sg1 offworld type uniform, with the tactical vast and p90 and zat etc, but id also like the jaffa kit aswell with staff, any pointers? sg kit 1st i think tho

Well I would recomend the SG Explorer Greens first, The Explorer Greens are the standard SG team kit that your thinking of, alot of the parts for that are quite easy to get thru army surplus stores. for the Explorer Greens first you'll need the basic elements which can be used with a couple of SG costumes, these are first off
Green BDU trousers, these will be your standard green combat trousers with the pockets on the legs. (Avrg cost £10-£25)
Magnum Classic Boots, these are high top army type boots, any high top blacks would be OKish but for best look go for the Magnum Classic Boots (Avrg Cost £40-£60)
Black T-Shirt, yep ggod old plain black T-Shirt easy to get, Tesco's do them for £2
That lot gives you a basic look as per wondering around base, and your only a 2 pocket eppelette shirt away from there slouching gear which is there hang around base look (Well you'd need a 4inch SG patch and a 3.5inch Tauri patch for the shoulders aswell)
For the rest of the Explorer greens you'd need a Alpha G-8 WEP jacket, these are the same (near as) used in the pilot episode ever so slightly darker than the ones used later but they where custom made. E-Bay is a good place to lok for them range from £30-£50, also available from www.silvermans.co.uk (goto products-alpha-next page-6th down ALPHA US MARINE G8 FLIGHT JKT £55), if you want to go a little more screen acurate to most of the seasons goto The Gate Room as they do replica jackets which are alot more accurate than the alphas but do cost more you'll also need A 4inch SG team Patch, 3.5inch Tauri Patch and a 3inch USAF Patch (Optional depending on what season look your going for)
Then you'll want a tach vest, the one used in the show is a Blackhawk Medic Utility vest, these run around £100-£130 if you can get them, even ordered direct from Blackhawk it may take some time to come. Many myself included have opted for now a cheaper alternative with Web-Tek stuff, I got a Web-Tek cross draw which is not the same as the standard SG vest but has had it's blackhawk version seen in a few eps here and there, and is the same as whats going to be in Atlantis i've herd.
Right that lot gives you the basic Public Safe look, after that you might want a Blackhawk Drop Leg Holster which wilst still empty is public safe.
I better explain public safe here, basically with replica weapons you have to be ULTRA carefull so my recomendation is not to bother with any real world gum lookalikes unless your happy for them to be nothing more than ornaments at home as taking them out in public can lead to a whole bunch of trouble, my recomendation is to go down the Zat route as alien weaponry is nice and safe, and should not worry the public if your at an event.

But your best hope is too look for you local army surplus (www.yell.com) and go in person, if you get your jacket first you can then take it with you and try get the best color match possible, the chances of getting an exact match are slim but you can get the closest possible that way. The chances are that they'll have the boots too, the Magnum Classic is a very popular boot.
