Old Kurlew, Part IV
Readying themselves for whatever nameless, bone-crunching horror lurks beyond the massive stone door, the group is consumed with apprehension. Atan nods to Ruig and Ruglan who gently ease the portal open.

Draxim and Atan slide into the corridor and total darkness. The dwarf scans the entrance hall to the west but sees nothing. Atan can't see in the dark, so doesn't do much scanning at all. He can't even see Draxim nod the 'all clear.'

Damn its dark
[How far down the hall is Draxim? and I figured we would get some spill light from the lantern and torch.]

Atan whispers back to the party through the door. "Total darkness. Good. No other torch lights. Come out Meneloss.....I have lost Draxim in this gloom."

Re: Damn its dark
Meneloss steps into the hall with his torch revealing Atan and Draxim not far from the door.

[Although Atan had planned to advance ahead of the group, exploring the guest quarters to the east, he won't get very far without a light source of his own.]

Atan sparks a torch and moves across the rubble strewn chamber to the northeast corridor which leads from it. Smashed tables and chairs litter the place, and from the amount of cushioned leather scattered over a floor covered in thick carpets Atan can tell this was once a fairly luxurious place... at least luxurious by his standards.

The northeast corridor is about twenty feet wide and extends due east just to the limit of Atan's torchlight (about forty feet). About half way along the south wall of the corridor is a stone basin jutting out from the wall about waist height. It is full of water. Nearby along the north wall is a small alcove with a iron-reinforced wooden door (human sized). At the end of the corridor, also on the north wall, is another alcove. From his position Atan cannot see whether or not it contains a door as well.

The light...the light
[What I was not very clearly trying to do was keep myself and Draxim at the very edge of our visible light. Draxim and I would rely on spotting other light sources (counter detection) and using the listen skill to locate possible bad guys. Once we feel it is safe, the rest of the group moves up. Meneloss of course would be able to see us (Draxim and I) due to his keen elven vision.]

Atan turns and waves the group forward to the edge of the corridor.

Re: The light...the light
[Ok... note that being at the edge of the light means that although Draxim can see up to 60 feet ahead, Atan can barely see himself. Listening is fine, but note also that broo cannot see in the dark either.]

Re: The light...the light
[From the previous post I gather that I have entered the guest hall and crossed to the northern most corridor on the east wall.]

As the party starts to enter the guest chamber Atan signals to Meneloss to guard the southern corridor and for Draxim to watch the western. Once the elven mage and dwarven explorer begin moving to their positions he beckons to the remaining party members. In a short hushed whisper, "We will continue to move in this fashion. You all investigate this room as you see fit. Kezib, you are quick and nimble. You are the messanger. You move between everyone and carry messages for us so as to keep the noise down if we are too spread apart to whisper effectively. Keep the scouts informed of what each of us find. Madragar, signal when everyone else is ready to move on from this room."

Re: The light...the light
Meneloss reaches the southeastern corridor leading from the guest hall and finds it is a mirror image of its northern neighbor. There is a stone basin in the middle of the corridor set into the north wall, and two alcoves along the south wall - one nearby with an iron-reinforced door and another down at the end of the hall some forty feet away.

Re: The light...the light
Madragar sees little to investigate in the smashed room, but does look around to see if anything was overlooked by the savage broo.

When he sees that the others are ready to move on, he signals Kezib to relay that fact to Atan.

Re: The light...the light
Madragar pokes around the leather scraps and flinders of smashed furniture under Ruig's lantern light. There appears to be little of value here, any loot being taken or destroyed by the broo.

[any chance of a new map showing the recent discoveries of the layout?]

Menelossdoes his best to keep still and quiet (Move silently +5). He listens in the dark for any sign of movement (Listen +4) He also keeps looking around the limited area of his vision (Spot +7) for anything of note. He is not neglecting the areas above him.

The tension.
Readying his flail, Sangraal flexes his gauntleted hand, the rivets creaking loudly in the dim light. Sangraal moves into the room when signaled, he calms his breathing and begins reaching out with his mind attempting to feret out the stinking decay of chaos.

Re: The tension.
[Sorry, I'm not going to make a .gif map of the entire complex. If you need more detail, ask.]

Meneloss sees and hears nothing further from his position, nor can he see the ceiling as it is higher than the torch light can illuminate.

Kezib senses no obvious sources of Chaos.

Re: The tension.
Atan picks up on the shrugs and lack luster searching of the room by the party. The place has been picked clean and the party knows it. Catching Draxim's eye during one of his many back checks he motions for him to come over with the rest of the party. "Kezib, tell Meneloss we will move through this north corridor. He has rear guard for now." He then points to Draxim and then at the first door on the north wall, he obviously wants the dwarf to check it out. He then indicates that Ruig and Ruglan move forward down the hall just past the door and guard towards the eastern door at the far end of the hall. As the party starts to move Atan glides over to the small pool of water and checks if it is drinkable. (look, sniff, sip technique)

Re: The tension.
Meneloss acknowledges the monk's whispered message with a nod.
He moves over to the secret door to keep an eye on Atan's progress with the pool to the West. He keeps glancing both to the Southern and Northern corridors behind him.

Re: The tension.
As Draxim sizes up the door and before he tests the water, "Oh yea, the ladder. Lets leave it in the guest room for now, it will blend with the junk." Spotting Meneloss moving towards the western entrance of the guest room he softly whistles to get his attention. Pointing at Meneloss he then points at his own eye, stay in sight of us.

Re: The tension.
[ooc: Misunderstood the direction Atan was going. I thought he was going to the pool in the great hall, not the basin in the hallway]

The elf-mage nods to Atan's hand signal and makes a thumbs-up sign ok I got it

Meneloss moves to the Northern Hallway entrance, behind the rest of the party. He keeps his back to the party mostly and is listening intently in the gloom. He will occasionally make a few steps to the South to keep an eye on the entrance to that corridor. He roams back toward the secret door to watch the West. Then he moves to his original position by the North corridor. He repeats this process while waiting for the party to complete the exploration of the side rooms.

Re: The tension.
[Flinders!?! What the hell kind of pansy-assed word is that?]

[This message brought to you by: the year 1994.]

Madragar moves forward with the group, his crossbow loaded and his mind alert for anything unusual in their surroundings. With a guard fore and aft, he's more concerned in noticing any clues left behind by giant or broo than with spotting enemies.

Re: The tension.
Draxim approaches the nearest door in the northern corridor with Ruig and Ruglan flanking him. Atan moves beyond the trio to inspect the basin.

The elf can see in the dim torchlight that it is clear, motionless water. He can also see a fist-sized blob of brown goo floating within it... broo shit.

Re: The tension.
"Abominable creatures!" he whispers. Turning around he stands behind Draxim awaiting the dwarf's findings on whether the door is locked or if it can be opened.

Re: The tension.
[I haven't seen Kenner on in a few days, so...]

Draxim approaches the door under the light of Ruig's lantern, carefully checking the floor as he goes. Satisfied that there are no pressure plates or false stones in the alcove Draxim crouches down and inspects the door's horizontal iron handle. Looking back to Ruig, Ruglan and Atan, the dwarf nods - indicating that it is free of traps... at least as far as he can tell.

Draxim produces a small rag and wraps it around the handle before trying to move it. The handle won't budge.
