Old Kurlew
Kildeer leads the expedition swiftly through the Braithvale. The dwarf appears to know the tangled deer-paths of the forest intimately, stopping only to refill the group's waterskins, or to inspect the tracks of some recent visitor to the vale. Yimris and Atan, not at all comfortable letting a dwarf take the lead in what is their natural element, follow along the flanks of the group, keeping an eye out for tracks, ambushes or other points of interest.

The Braithvale itself is an old and overgrown forest. Perhaps it is something about being on the leeward side of the mountains, but the forest feels very different from the tall pines to the west that Yimris and Atan are accustomed to.

Generally, Kildeer leads the group due west for most of the day, finally stopping for a meal and some rest near mid-afternoon at a cluster of boulders beside a babbling stream.

Madragar does his best to memorize their route, and allows Kyethe to fly freely, scouting their path ahead.

Re: Old Kurlew
Meneloss digs into his pack and pulls out some smoked ham and hard cheese. "Thanks to the larders of the Ghurugil I'll be eating some fine victuals." he cheerfully says to Killdeer. He swigs from his waterskin and bites into the salty smoked ham. Looking about the Braithville, Meneloss asks Killdeer what each small tree plant or moss is within sight. Nodding appreciatively to the wiley dwarf's answers.

Re: Old Kurlew
All the dwarves of the group seem to remain in a cluster, including Draxim. Last night's stubborn displeasue about the Ghurugil joining the expedition seems to have dissipated, and been replaced by a determination to guard them against harm instead. His customary youthful humor (for a dwarf anyway) has returned though.
"At this rate Meneloss we may never see a tavern again and you'll neer collect on the debt I owe you!"
Draxim's pack is also much heavier than before, but he offers to lighten the load of others who seemed overburdened during the morning trek. He munches on an apple (always eat the perishables first) and refills his waterskin at the stream afterward.
"Ach! I knew I was forgetting something! I've no whetstone to sharpen my new axe." He slaps his head in self-admonition.

Re: Old Kurlew
At Draxim's mention of the debt, Meneloss smiles. His scar always makes the elf's grins look crooked and not all together wholsome. "Aye Draxim it will be a long while afre we drink cold ales in a fine pub. Care to wager an ale as to how long it will take before the two of us are belly up to a table with a pair of frosty brews before us?"
The elf takes a long pull of his waterskin and chuckles "Would that my waterskin had ale in it. A long days walk leaves a powerful thirst indeed!"

It's a mystery.
As Ruglan sets his shield down to unpack some victuals. Draxim sees the new decorations for the first time. He paces slowly over for a closer look.
"The Storm Bull!" He smiles up at Ruglan then claps him on the shoulder.
Later, he bends Ruig's ear. "I think I understand something now. I knew it was the right thing to do to try to prevent you from coming. But the result of that was that you came anyway, and we got to hear that incredible story from Savud. The story in turn, inspired Ruglan to paint his sheild, glorifying the Storm Bull. So I guess I am just supposed to do what I know is right, and even though sometimes things don't work out the way I think that they should, they work out for the best anyway." He smiles at his spiritual mentor, clearly proud of his revalation.

Re: It's a mystery.
"Why not!" says Draxim to Meneloss, "An ale says we'll be at a pub on the seventh day from today. Either that or we'll starve to death, as I only have seven days rations so its a safe bet!" he laughs.

Re: It's a mystery.
Ruig replies "or maybe you're just as stubborn as dried cow dung. Bahaha!" The burly dwarf grabs his belly and sends a deep guffaw through the wind swept forest.

[And it's Savud...]

a bet's a bet
Meneloss nods in agreement "So it is to be seven days from now so says Draxim. Any other time and I have the ale agreed?" Meneloss smiles his crooked grin and shakes the callused rough hands of Draxim. He goes on "Though I'd not worry too much about starving with this group. On the mountianside we'll find nothing to eat, but here in the Braithville Atan, Yimris, Killdeer and even myself could probably keep our company fed as long as it took."

"No my sly freind, I say seven days or before to avoid starvation. You have neglected to factor in how much a young dwarf can eat when forced to exercize!" he pats his belly.

Draxim can't help but laugh a little at the well deserved dig from Ruig.

Re: a bet's a bet
Kildeer and Harek peer through the gaps in the forest canopy toward the high cliffs that stand five or so miles to the west. By their hand gestures it is obvious they're trying to come to an agreement on the best path to take.

"If we follow the northern trail," Harek argues, "where we saw that big, black haired goat last time, we can save some time on the second tier."

"That path is unstable, I say," Kildeer replies. "And a stiff wind could blow us off the crag once we clear Yorin's Stair."

A path A path!
Draxim on hearing that Harek's way might be unecessarily dangerous, immediatley sides with Kildeer.
"Here now Harek! Kildeer has guided us well so far. Why be in such a hurry anyway?"

Re: A path A path!
"The test is not in the Braithvale, young Draxim," Harek replies. "But on the cliffs, there. The weather is holding but I would not want to be stuck on the eastern face of the mountain if a storm comes. We need to consider the speed of our ascent."

Re: It's a mystery.
Atan, bow in hand, is dressed in his standard woodland garb but a stout wool coat can now be seen under his cloak as well as a woolen watch cap upon his head. His back pack appears quite fuller and in addition to the bedroll normally secured to the bottom of his pack is a smaller thick blanket. Two torchs are also tied to the left side of his back pack in contrast to the dozen some odd smaller shafts sticking up from his quiver on the right. Despite the extra weight he seems to be carrying, Atan does not appear to be visibily slowed.

At one point during the morning's walk Atan slips from one flank over to join up with Yimris. There the two can be seen conversing at moments while scouting.

Re: It's a mystery.
Madragar whistles a bit and seems in a generally good mood. He allows those knowledgeable in woodcraft to determine their course, and reserves his words for things he knows something of.

With his small pack high on his shoulders, his light crossbow secured to the pack with a single leather thong and his stout staff in his hand, the bald and tattooed mage sets a decent pace, conversing from time to time with his glossy black crow.

A path A path
Draxim looks at Harek, and then back to Kildeer.
"Well you two sort it out, but it sounds like we will have peril whichever way we choose. Just try to pick the path that is less ... perilous."

Kezib is feeling rather good, today. Those that take notice, notice a little spring in his step. Wearing the woolen cloak to keep warm Kezib quietly mimicks Madragar, for a moment. Anyone that notices, knows its in a good hearted nature.
Kezib takes in the sites around him. The tangley branches extending from the massive trunks around him. The underbrush of dead leaves, ferns and an occasional mushroom patch. The calls of the wild fill his ears and mind of what type of creatures these may be. Being the first time heading to a mountain, Kezib is rather excited. Using his quarterstaff as a walking stick, Kezib will from time to time use it to move a branch out of his way.

Cold winds blow
Meneloss clears his throat to get the attention of the two Dwarves Harek and Killdeer. "Gentle Dwarves," he begins, "as a child I grew up in the Valegalen. I too have seen what the mountains can do. While the weather may be fair now, it can turn foul in a moment. So that is the basis for our dilemma is it not? If we take the quicker route, we will be on a more dangerous aspect for less time. Conversely, the longer route may be less perilous but will chance a longer exposure to weather. I agree with Harek. Let us chance the more perilous climb to avoid being caught in the open longer. What to the rest of you think?" Meneloss asks the group.

Re: A path A path
Sangraal halts wearily with the party as the dwarves converse about which path to take. Resting his flail on the ground he rubs a shoulder in an attempt to work out a knotted muscle. Sangraal is obviously weighed down by his new weapon but the shortend strides of the accompanying Grugilil have allowed him to keep pace. A small blessing to which Sangraal thanks Yelm as he digs in his pack for a piece of dried porkbread.

Re: A path A path
Kezib walks next to Sangraal, and snickers at his oversized and encumbering weapon.
"Do you need to rest, my brother?" Kezib asks mockingly, knowing that Sangraal, with his gritty determination, would not rest if others were toiling.
